Impressions: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (the trailer)

The only hitch is that it's a videogame adaptation, and those just never seem to turn out very well. It certainly doesn't help that Ben Kingsley, the one who starred in the ill-fated and ill-conceived film version of BloodRayne, has returned in another villainous role. Still, we have to admit that what we saw (reminder: just a trailer) looks to be an exciting jaunt through swashbuckling adventure.
Read on for the highlights -- and take your time. The movie that doesn't come out until May 2010.
Cheatsheet: Prince Dastan has come into possession of the Dagger of Time, which can release the Sands of Time. As a result, the bearer can turn back time. The Prince and Princess Tamina must evade traps, demons, and the evil Nizam, who wants the dagger for himself, and race to the vaguely named "Secret Guardian Temple." Unfortunately, the trailer doesn't tell us if they're supposed to destroy the Dagger, unite it with something, or just sell it in a bazaar.
The Good:
There is plenty of "platforming" in here, where The Prince leaps, jumps, chimneys down walls, and narrowly escapes nefarious traps. That's a nice nod to the game, which first appeared on home computers back in 1989. You'll also hear a couple of familiar sound effects, like the psssshwt! of an arrow as it narrowly misses The Prince. The trailer was filled with heroic action featuring a very ripped Jake Gyllenhaal, performing everything you'd expect from the franchise's protagonist: sword fighting; wooing Princess Tamina, sweeping back his emo hair and ... err, more jumping. Lots of jumping. There's also a some witty repartee between Dastan and Tamina, a la Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood. What better movie to emulate?
The Bad:
They've made plenty of changes to the mythology of The Prince of Persia, which is loosely based on The Sands of Time game that came out in 2003. Creator Jordan Mechner wrote the first two drafts of the film script himself (see the trailer he cut together when he pitched the project to Bruckheimer here), although Disney later brought on three other screenwriters to work on it as well. They've given The Prince a name (probably out of necessity), so he's now Prince Dastan, and for some reason they've changed Princess Farah into Princess Tamina. Also, Dastan is a former street urchin who has been adopted by the King and turned into a Prince. It's also distracting that both Dastan and Tamina speak the Queen's English ... where's the Persia in here?
The Ugly:
Like other recent Bruckheimer movies, this one feels like it's going to rely so heavily on CGI that it won't feel real. The swirling sand effect that is used whenever Dastan uses the Dagger of Time to go into "Bullet Time" leaves just his floating head, suspended above a whirlwind that resembles his body. It looks both fake and extremely weird. Bruckheimer was quick to point out to us that this is still a work in progress, which we hope means, "This will actually look better when it's finished." They also feature an extremely small amount of Kingsley in the trailer, which makes us fear he'll be a hammy, over-the-top villain. Just give us a villain we can love to hate, not one we hate to love.
With the trailer providing only a snappily edited glimpse into the final film, writing impressions is like trying to judge a book by its cover -- a very noisy cover, in this case. You'll be able to judge for yourself on Joystiq next Tuesday, November 3rd, and in theaters in front of 2012 on November 13th.

Bruckheimer? I'll pass.
Let's face it, it's not like the games had a great story in the first place.
Bobby Kotick 2: Echoes @ Oct 29th 2009 10:05AM
Yeah! Why have that guy when we should get someone with some REAL talent?

BigDonny09 @ Oct 29th 2009 10:31AM
How can this movie fail? If we learned anything from October Sky its that Jake Gyllenhaal can perform any role beautifully. Ranging from a southern coal miner's son or a gay cowboy or even a middle eastern ninja. Everything he touches turns to gold.
Aerothorn @ Oct 29th 2009 1:15PM
You mean, like The Day After Tomorrow?
Morisato @ Oct 29th 2009 1:35PM
Is it just me or does Bruckheimer look like someone you'd want to punch in the face just by the way he looks. This isn't really a remark about his work or his ability to produce. He's not rich for no reason... he's probably really smart and likable too... there's just something about the way he looks. He just looks like someone who has a punchable face. Same goes for George Lucas, Michael Moore, and Spencer Pratt.

@Bobby Kotick 2: Echoes
You know, I'm beginning to think that Uwe Boll came before his time. I've been looking at the responses to the Assassin's Creed 2: Lineage short, and it seems like everyone thinks it's amazing and should be made into a movie. And while I do _like_ it, honestly the script, acting, the ...fighting (if it can really be called that), and CG feel like something out of a Uwe Boll-quality film.
If Uwe Boll had been born a decade later and had come into his own making video game-based shorts, maybe his stuff would be considered fantastic as well.
Or maybe game-base movies are only truly "good" as short-films. idk.
Omega2k3 @ Oct 29th 2009 4:34PM
Holy crap, Mori, I had to Google him, and you are 100% correct.
edgore @ Oct 29th 2009 9:37AM
*SIR* Ben Kingsley!!!! Apparently he's very touchy about that, no matter how many bad movies he is in...
Discotheque @ Oct 29th 2009 11:04AM
Eh I think he's still a good enough actor to be given respect though. I don't hate Robert De Niro despite all the crap that guy's been in lately.
Titan @ Oct 29th 2009 10:03AM
Jake Gyllenhaal is enough to make me not wanna see this movie and go throw up somewhere instead.

"It certainly doesn't help that Ben Kingsley, the one who starred in the ill-fated and ill-conceived film version of BloodRayne"
You shut your mouth! The guy's in one terrible movie and you act like he raped your dog. I'll have you know BloodRayne would have destroyed my eyeballs if it wasn't for Sir Kingsley.
acefondu @ Oct 29th 2009 11:19AM
Yeah, being in a bad movie or two doesn't change the fact that he's a great actor.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 29th 2009 11:20AM
I'm guilty of falling asleep through many movies, but Bloodrayne has the dubious distinction of being the first and only movie I have STOPPED while watching. I vaguely remember seeing Michelle Rodriguez underwater before saying "fuck this" and pulling it out of the PS2.
Surely I'm not the only one?
LeChuck @ Oct 29th 2009 12:41PM
Not to take away from any of his accomplishments but he's been in a lot more than ONE bad movie. Bloodrayne is just the most relevant being that it's also a videogame movie.
TostitoBandito @ Oct 29th 2009 12:57PM
Kingsley is in a ton of movies period. He's one of the most prolific actors in the business. Because of that, yes he will end up in some bad films. He's still one of the greatest actors of his generation and turned in arguably the best lead acting performance in the history of cinema in Gandhi (and deservedly won an Oscar for it).
fffunfarm06 @ Oct 29th 2009 10:06AM

"It's also distracting that both Dastan and Tamina speak the Queen's English ... where's the Persia in here?"
I think the Persia was taken out of the movie when they got a lead actor that looks more like a prince of Sweden.
Caution: Do not look directly at actor. Glare may cause blindness.
DBuck_Eye @ Oct 29th 2009 4:20PM
Does anyone really want to read subtitles throughout an entire movie? I for one found it quite annoying in the Passion. Sure it's realism, but come on.
That Burning Sensation @ Oct 29th 2009 10:36AM
How hard is it to hire an actor that actually looks Persian? Maybe Hollywood will make a movie were a Tom Cruise is a samurai.... oh wait, damn.
Temidien @ Oct 29th 2009 11:53AM
In all fairness Cruise's character in The Last Samurai wasn't Japanese, he was a soldier from America. It's not the same as casting a Gyllenhaal as the Prince.
Vcize @ Oct 29th 2009 1:47PM
Yeah, that's a horrible analogy.

Yeah I've seen the film twice and I really like it.....sue me
Myquirk @ Oct 29th 2009 11:11AM
Jerry Bruckheimer may have a spotty track record, but he has produced some good (Pirates of the Caribbean) and some great (Black Hawk Down) movies. He has a talented director and some talented performers working on this one, so I am optimistic.
Ballistic H @ Oct 29th 2009 11:39AM
I have yet to see a Bruckheimer-produced movie that failed. So far, I liked them all.
decapitor @ Oct 29th 2009 11:13AM
The POP developers said they based the prince on Chen Chang as Dark Cloud from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It would have been a lot more interesting to see what the crouching tiger team could have done with POP with Chen Chang as the lead.
Rahabib @ Oct 29th 2009 11:31AM
I wonder if they will slip in a "oh look, a crack" gag or two in there.... I hope not anyway.

Why does Joystiq not put a link to the trailer in the article? Unless I missed it.

In other words, Joystiq is just rubbing it in our faces that they are cool enough to get an exclusive sneak-peak ... at a trailer. I think I can wait until the 3rd.
ant @ Oct 29th 2009 1:08PM
i really dont see the problem of them speaking the right way to speak English. After all, the american english just sounds trashy to me, and I'm American. Learning another language is hard for the actors so the old English is much better. And in the video game, they did speak old english.
Omega2k3 @ Oct 29th 2009 4:39PM
Maybe it sounds trashy because you live in Trashville, Tennessee.
RobLink (Alex Kidd incarnate) @ Nov 4th 2009 1:37PM
By 'old English', did you mean English? Or did you mean Shakespearean English? Because I heard them speak English, nothing old about it.
Diskoboy7 @ Oct 29th 2009 1:19PM
I can sum up, in two words, why I won't see this move - Jerry. Bruckheimer.
E @ Oct 29th 2009 3:47PM
Hmmm...a white boy playing Goku in Dragon Ball Evol, er, I'm sorry: Dragonball Evolution. Now, another white dude playing a Persian prince... I love the "colorblind" American film industry.

Don't forget The Last Airbender.
chrono5577 @ Oct 29th 2009 4:38PM
Seriously.......... I just............... I don't know.
The man can make a good action sequence, but he really thinks that the plots of his movies are "epic", and thereby justify some 2 to 3 hour run time, when in fact it's just a popcorn flick, which means I'm stuck looking at my watch in theaters. Seriously, he reminds me a lot of Kojima in that aspect, except with massively less subplot and themes. I'll give it it's fair shake, but Bruckheimer rarely leaves me very endearing towards his work.
rubAdub72 @ Oct 30th 2009 1:54PM
Brucjheimer's a producer, i won't even touch on artistic merits from his films because he's more of a businessman than anything else.
However, what his interest on the Prince of Persia franchise means is that videogame based movies may finally leave the B-movie swamp and play with the big boys, which is only beneficial for the industry as a whole.
Videogames are already beating movies in numbers, it would be interesting to see the tides turning and videogames becoming the actual main product that spawn film tie-ins instead of the opposite.
jpvillavert @ Oct 30th 2009 12:20PM
That "psssshwt!" sound effect will go perfect with that "pffffffbbbt!" sound coming from that guy in front of me who just killed his second tray of nachos and is too into the movie to get up and take a dump.
neo @ Oct 30th 2009 4:15AM
Is it me or does the guy in the picture from above looks like hes powered by the unreal engine 3?
