Eh.. If mainstream is just the crap they play on the radio these days: Then I agree. Lupe Fiasco is a legit MC. I just wish he was more known than Wayne, who doesn't deserve an ounce of hype.

@Space: thats not even close to some of the great songs he did, people need to hear more than singles before they diss (not saying you did but the majority do)

P.O.S., Del, Dälek, Mos Def, Mr. Lif, O.C., Art Official, Blackalicious, Cecil Otter, Deeskee, Opio, and El-P are artists that I can name off the top of my head that are MUCH better than Jay-Z.

With that said, I shouldn't of used the word mainstream... but still, saying that I hate mainstream makes me mainstream doesn't make any sense dipshit...

By saying you don't like something mainstream, you have become "mainstream", because your opinion of hate towards all things mainstream is common to millions of people around the world.

It's kind of like how emo kids think they're such individuals by dressing and acting like MILLIONS OF OTHER WHINEY KIDS THE WORLD OVER.

Does that clarify it for you?

I'm sure a lot of people claim to hate mainstream things, but not millions... and certainly not a majority. You have to get over yourself and stop trying to paint me as a hypocrite. If you want to discuss this with me (or play Uncharted 2 and/or LBP) my PSN is manmanpotty. Until then, keep trying to put me down... it won't work...

No hate was intended with my post...I was just trying to clarify that for you, and yes, MILLIONS of people the world over hate mainstream-this-or-that, so hating anything mainstream puts you in a stereotype, the same as loving mainstream-this-or-that puts you in a stereotyped class. Another example: Almost every frat guy/soro girl here in my state is out to "just cut loose and be themselves" while dressing and acting EXACTLY like hundreds of others just like them. There is no 100% individuality out there any more, it's a big world. It's not such a terrible thing, but my guess is that Evan was trying to express to you that "hating the mainstream" is not really something that makes you a unique individual. Trust me, this will hit you as you get older.

First of all, I took back using the word mainstream, I was generalizing when I shouldn't. Secondly, I'm not trying to be unique... I just wanted to express my dislike for commercialized hip-hop. Thirdly, I don't know what state you come from but I'm from Louisiana and I went to LSU... people here tend to have a conformist attitude (not that I give a shit or that it's related to the point I'm trying to make). Anyways, I am impressed with your elitism... but I couldn't care less about that...

People need to realise Hov games on only sports titles like he said in the interview. Its a quiet law in the streets that you don't play MMORPG's or at the least mention them on camera! But really, I'm a huge Hov fan and wouldn't expect him to playing or mentioning playing Borderlands or Tekken 6 in his interview. Madden seems about right since he always mentions ESPN as the greatest show ever.

Also if you really wanna hear classic Hov, then get Politics as Usual, Streets is Watchin', or something more recent like So Ambitious, or Thank You!

Its funny how much he humiliates himself in this interview. You would think he knew he was going to be talking about video games before he got there.

But I guess he's Jay-Z so it doesn't matter, right?

Bullshit gaming claims need to include a music game, Madden, and GTA; Jay-Z for got the rules. I'd have been more impressed if he just said "nah, I got other hobbies."

Whenever a celebrity is trying to convince you they are a gamer they always claim they had to quit playing because they liked them too much.

This is Shagi's rule.

You guys can rag on Jay-Z all you want about not being a "true gamer" or whatever, but considering that:

-He's a multi-platinum recording artist, owns or has owned a clothing line, an NBA team, and a CEO of a record label.

-He's got Beyonce.

I doubt he's had the time (or the inclination) to get to level 80 on his WoW account.

In all seriousness though, who decided that you're not a "real" gamer if you only enjoy the most popular games?

I'm pretty sure most sports fans (outside of soccer/football, at least in the U.S.) only follow the major iteration of that sport in America and nowhere else (NFL, NBA, MLB & now UFC). We wouldn't say they're not true fans. Or maybe some of you would.

I don't think it's the fact that he's not a "true gamer," whatever that means, but rather that it seems like he lied about it. Why fake it? "No, I don't really game but I jumped at the chance to spread the hip-hop influence" would have been a perfectly fine answer. It's this belief that one needs to pander to the idiots in order to sell something that gets people angry.

And how does your second point equal at all with the first one? "He's got Beyonce?" So what? There are tons of hot women in the world, and I'm sure all the men involved with them do plenty of other things. Now the whole multi-business man thing, I can see that demanding a lot of time.

His business endeavors related to him not having the time.

I'm just speculating here, but his relationship with (an almost equally busy) Beyonce could potentially relate to him not having the "inclination". ;-)

Anyway, I feel like he did address the desire to expand the hip-hop audience in the first part of the clip, and I guess I'm in the minority here, but I don't see where he came across like he was faking anything about formerly being a gamer. He did seem to stutter over his words here and there, but to be honest I see that with a lot of celebrities/musicians (hip hop or not) when talking about a subject that isn't their primary area of expertise.

I just get the idea from a lot of gamers I come across (not you, aristokrat) that if most/all of the games you play are sports based, you're not really considered a "gamer", which I think is BS.

Fair enough. I didn't watch the video (I know, I know, RFTA and whatnot), but I can understand how people might perceive such things either way. As you say, some people don't consider you a true gamer unless you've played Psychonauts and Shadow of the Colossus, and that's ridiculous.

With regard to Beyonce, I bet their schedules frequently don't align and he could spend plenty of time playing games if he wanted, he probably instead spends it on some other form of entertainment.

I agree with stephen.....the one thing that hasn't been mention is that why everytime, a hip-hop artist (or anything hip-hop related) comes up on XBOX fanboy, this site feels the need to diss or discredit it. I consider myself to be a gamer, but would never play games such as WOW (becuase I have no interest in it). Two of my brothers only play Madden and 2K10, that doesn't make them less of a gamer...if you think it does please play them and you'll change your mind. At the end of the day people play what they want to play and like what they like. I will be purchasing DJ HERO (for my kids) this will keep them off of my real tables....for now

ON ANOTHER NOTE--Jay Z has been making records longer than most people realize.....his first appearance on wax was back in 1986. You can google and search all you want, but 9 times out of ten it will mention his first time on wax was after that, but I got the 12" to prove it. Does that make you a good artist just becuase you have been making records for so long, of course not. But give Jay Z credit when credit is due, hate is a weak emotion.
