Samsung offering sacks of cash for mobile game ideas

It looks like Samsung is willing to pay as much as $250,000 to development teams or individuals for any mobile game pitches that eventually make it to the recently launched Samsung Application Store. According to Develop Online, Samsung has enlisted the help of mobile developer Handmark to help oversee the upcoming megaton of pitches, prototypes and products, as well as assist developers with production of their ideas for the platform.

Having lost a sizable chunk of the mobile consumer base to Apple, and more specifically the iTunes App Store, Samsung is now reaching into its pockets to ensure the company's slip in market share doesn't turn into a complete mudslide. "This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone, including big brands, mobile developers or any individual with a unique, creative idea to make it a reality," Handmark's senior VP of Global Sales, Chris Barnett said. Reading the T&C, it looks like the developer needs to come up with 50% of the cost... sucks.

"Each successful game idea will receive a development advance fee equivalent to 50% of the production cost and up to $250,000."

At first, I thought "development advance fee" meant you would get 50% to start, and get the rest later, up to $250k but nope... reading further into the T&C it specifically says:

"10. Developer will source necessary funds for the other 50% of the production cost"

Raising money is always the hardest part.

I work for EA Mobile and i have to say Samsung makes the best phones when it comes to mobile games. I'm not talking smartphones here but your standard dumbphone or featurephone. Some how even their crappiest devices manage to crush anything from LG, Nokia, or Motorola when it comes to framerate and graphics quality. Not to mention their phones usually have keypads that are somewhat usable. I hope this will also mean them working to give us better specs so the games can get better.
