Regardless of good/bad art decisions.... the game design does sound epic.

It's like the spawn of Red Faction and Okami. You can delete and draw terrain in real-time. That's gotta be worth something to you people!

I'd sooner pay $50 for a Poster of this rad art

than I'd buy this game. >:

It's more than that, Warren. Sure, we're disappointed that the concept art seems completely unrelated to these screenshots... but that's only part of the problem.

The problem is that these stills are unbelievably ugly, regardless of what they're showing us. Even if the environments were mundane and traditional, they could still look nice, couldn't they? Why did Kingdom Hearts on the PS2 -- less powerful than the Wii by any measure -- look so much better than this? These shots are riddled with low-poly environments, and hastily plastered with flat textures. I literally laughed out-loud when I saw the pixellated flower flat-painted on the green turf. The characters are modeled better, but are textured to look like cheap plastic toys. No game in 2009 should look like this, much less a high-profile collaboration from Warren Spector and Disney.

It is a 2010 game, after all. We're talking about screens from about a year out, incidental details like the flowers could readily change. Hell, you could take NSMBWii as an example, that game has developed quite a bit of detail in the final build just in the 5 months since E3.

I hope you're right. It's possible that these are placeholder graphics while they sort out physics and gameplay. But if that's the case, you don't release the shots without a huuuuge disclaimer, if at all.

I'm sorry, but these screens need more than light tweaking. They need a completely new art team.

forget all that and direct your attention to this: http://www.nintendoeverything.com/?p=26784

this is my hero. i would absolutely LOVE to see what Warren Spector can do with Mario, Zelda or heck maybe even Starfox! come on Nintendo!! if not this GEN then do this next GEN! ahhhh who the fuck am i kidding. with the way Nintendo's operating this GEN, if they don't change they act, this will never see the light of day. *sigh* wish things would be just like the NES/SNES days.

Perhaps you should let this game come out before jumping to insane conclusions? Right now, I see a lot of swagger and talk from Warren Spector, and screenshots that look like something my Dreamcast puked up. I don't know if I'm ready to hold that sad pile of evidence against something like Super Mario Galaxy, which was arguably the best video game released that year across any console.

And I won't hesitate to remind anybody that for every great game Spector has created (Deus Ex is among the best), he's churned out some real turds to go along with them (like the disaster that was its much-hyped sequel).

Just saying.

@ Greyseal

buddy i am NOT putting this game down if that's what your thinking. i am perhaps amongst the few people who believe this game will be great! what I'm referring to is that i doubt that Nintendo will allow spector to have a piece of the Mario or Zelda pie. why? because (to the best of my knowledge) the last time that Nintendo worked with a developer was back in the SNES days when they worked to develop super mario RPG.

@tuunicopapi

Allow me to direct your attention to the Metroid Prime series, developed by Retro Studios; the Mario & Luigi RPGs for the GBA/DS, developed by AlphaDream; and the Paper Mario games, developed by Intelligent Systems. Then there's Metroid: Other M, being developed by Team Ninja.

My point? Nintendo have let other companies make games with their flagship characters long after Square made SMRPG.

@ FantomRedux

ok you got me with Metriod Other M (I'm such an idiot how could i have forgotten about that one lol) as well as with Mario & Luigi superstar saga/partners in time but Retro Studios and Intelligent Systems are both 1ST PARTY Studios of Nintendo so those don't count. but i guess it was my fault that you mentioned those since i failed to mention that i was referring to 3rd party Studios. but it doesn't matter fact is you proved me wrong with Mario & Luigi and Metriod Other M so i thank you for correcting me.

Did you actually read my post? I didn't think you were putting the game down at all. Quite the opposite.

I think you're drooling all over Epic Mickey despite the fact that, as of now, it doesn't actually look very good at all. It looks like Warren Spector needs to spend more time making a good game, and less time talking to the press about what currently appears to be a very underwhelming effort. He got us all excited with awesome concept art just to drop a platformer with alarmingly crappy graphics in our lap? I'd love to know why you think this game looks good, except that Warren Spector said it will be. I hope he proves me wrong, but as of now, it seems like a lot of talk.

And in the process, you managed to imply that Nintendo can't make good games anymore, despite the fact that they continue to release some of the best games ever made. Super Mario Galaxy, in particular, should be mandatory playing by anybody who considers themselves a gamer. It's a master-class lesson in both level and graphic design, and if Mr. Spector has played it for more than ten minutes, I suspect he will find himself less confused about why people aren't impressed with what he's shown us of Epic Mickey so far.

This is going to sound selfish and unrealistic, but I don't care. Just start Over, seriously Just start over now, you see that the net and the base has exploded. You have shown the concept art and nobody realistically wants the same quality. It isn't possible, no system out there ever has concept art truly match the game.

I think sam fish said it best in last post, they look at the price of what it would take to create this game and; then what the artist create and they either go yay or nay. Because if you just go crazy and let an artist create some insane world, when you try to match it with money, the game cost will be astronomical so there must be a middle ground, I get that. That being said, this isn't some unknown character, on an unknown system. This is Mickey Mouse, and it is on the Wii the system that sits in the most houses compared to all next generation home consoles. They can make their money back if they put real resource into this game.

I am not a graphics whore, but if they skimp on this part of the game the look the feel of the game, I can't trust that the play mechanics is going to save it because what is their incentive to stay true. He needs to go back to Disney tell them to give him the resources to make something Iconic, I guarantee he wouldn't regret it. People will not reject something great, through marketing alone seeing their Wii offer them something so different and new, people that own a wii and are looking for something other than wii fit will embrace it.

But on the other hand if he is just going to give up and take what he gets because it isn't a PS360, then he is missing an opportunity to stand out on a platform that really doesn't have any AAA games. And before I get flamed I like the wii I do, but when you look at games LIke Borderlands, Uncharted 2, Arkham Asylum, there is more than just graphics that makes those games great.

This is the man that helped make Thief, and Deus Ex back then the graphics were not the greatest but he made those games iconic. He has to be able to do better than this.

Why can't they just take that concept art and turn it into a graphic novel :(

The problem is not graphic engines, resolutions or system capabilities. The problem is unsatisfied expectations. The "leaked" concept art had an attitude that is no longer present. It shows us a view on Micky's world that has never been seen. It was new and exciting. These screen shots just look ... Disney.

No real problem with that had we not gotten our hopes up on the concept art world. As it stands now, I have zero interest in this game.

But I wold love to play Warren's original vision.

How can you seriously go from those concepts to something that looks sub-par to the original kingdom hearts? I think it would've looked great cell-shaded or with hand drawn graphics like Muramasa or something. As it stands it looks like the game equivalent of plain oatmeal: boring.

That's really too bad, some of that concept art is some of the most 'epic' I've seen coming from Disney for years. I guess a lot of creativity is going to waste over there because the corporation wants to play it safe.

Oh well, another shovelware title to forget about. The epicness apparently wasn't meant to be from the get go.
