When we first heard that Left 4 Dead 2 would feature a "Realism Mode," our first reaction was to hide in the closet, swaddled in the comfort of old coats and dust bunnies. Left 4 Dead wasn't exactly an easy game to begin with, so hearing that there would be an even more realistic, more punishing difficulty mode was a bit difficult to swallow. Now, G4TV has been kind enough to assemble a brief walkthrough of one level played in Realism Mode and ... it really doesn't look all that bad.
X-Play's Abbie Heppe explains there are a few major differences. One, dead players will stay dead unless revived with a defibrillator -- keep in mind that each player can carry a defibrillator or a med kit, not both. Second, zombies must be killed with headshots, though it's hard to tell how strict this rule is in the video. Third, players have to be much closer to items in order to pick them up. Finally, there are many, many more witches. See it for yourself after the break.
How about some clarification. She makes it sound like the only mode with the defib is realism, this isn't true. She also says the melee weapons don't hurt your team mates, this is not true. Also she says there's lots of witches in Realism mode, but the reality is she's playing on the Sugar Mill level which has a lot of witches because they are attracted to the sugar.
According to Valve, Realism mode removes the glow from your teammates, and does make the commons take a lot more damage, unless you shoot them in the head.
Just more misinformation spouted from the mouth of an idiot, passed along by some Joystiq writer.
The one-hit-instant-death from the witch is rough. That's really going to make people think about how they're proceeding and talk to each other. I bet it will be a much more engaging experience that way.
i think she said she was saving it for later in case something went wrong, but wtf, you're gonna walk halfway across the map to get a medkit for 1 guy? Geez.
actually, this level just happens to have more witches (as part of this campaign, you have to go through a sugar factory, and the story is that L4D universe witches are drawn to sugar).(seriously).
You didn't mention that witches do one hit kills in realism mode, regardless of difficulty level. nor that you no longer see teammates outlines through walls. (so if they run off and get attacked, it'll be harder to find them). I think all of this is slightly clarified in the Chet interview video which accompanies the walkthrough vid you linked.
I've also heard that realism mode won't have unlimited ammo for the pistols. But i don't believe the videos/interviews confirm this yet.
Uncle Phil there actually paraphrases louis. "I know one thing, I'm gonna grab everything i can!" as opposed to louis' "gonna grab everything i can!" Also, considering EVERY character can grab pills and will announce it some way or another, calling that racist is just about as fucktarded as the guy who said L4D2 was racist because some of the zombies used to be black people
i like the idea of realistic mode, but this doesn't look realistic enough... there shouldn't be any highlighted weapons at all, no matter how close you are. and does anyone else think its a bit stupid calling it Realistic mode, but still having the annoying stupid hints "Don't shoot team mates" not to mention the fact you still have a crosshair! BAH!
Whats your deal with keeping your flashlight off most of the game? I would of love to been able to see more than a black screen for more than 3/4 of your playthrough.
I don't want to sound harsh but the person playing the game doesn't know that much realism mode does NOT add more witchs, the level she was playing on was the sugar mill. The sugar mill always has more witchs, you can check for yourself Quoted from Left 4 dead wiki "Sob Story
A Left 4 Dead 2 achievement, it is earned by navigating through a Witch-infested sugar mill in the Hard Rain campaign without killing a single one. " You can also look at the achivement list at http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/left-4-dead-2/achievements/ OR look at this - http://uk.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/left4dead2/news.html?sid=6237618&mode=previews, and read. Now I have proven the first point I will go on to the seconed there was NO reason for her to leave without a medkit, there was one spare but she didn't get it, I think she gave some reason but I didn't and was probley wrong. LAST POINT, she says that "melee weapons don't do team damage" ... nope they DO do team damage. Sorry to seem negative XD The actual mode looks sick though :) BTW if any1 says I'm sad to know all this they are RIGHT, I have been obsessed with L4D 2 ever since it was annonced lol!
ok the general opinion of her being kinda bad in the game seems true but after I played the game myself its normal to leave that medkit behind, why? because the campaing consist of you getting fuel for a boat thats waiting in the beggining of the campaing, so basically you need to leave some stuff behind to aid you in case you get grinded on the way back, besides the return is harder since the director spawns almost random storms along the way that call the horde in the middle of it...
so the only noob thing I saw her do besides her terrible aim was to actually use the medkit in the safe room when she had 70% of life, wich by my standarts is fine as long as I can bring my medkit with me in case it drops further, also its been noted by a lot of hardcore players(im not one of them, Im in training :P ) that as long as you play realism mode, and wich dificulty you play it in, its usefull to carry at least one deffibrilator, up to three even, as long as the players are good and have good comunication you may need only two for a whole campaing
shes wrong in a sense............i think she might mean there are more witches in the HARD RAIN campaign. not realism in general i dont think...............trust me there are A LOT of witches in the hard rain campaign! haha
