Joystiq is undecided about Wal-Mart's Modern Warfare 2 ad

We just can't quite figure out what to make of Wal-Mart's new Modern Warfare 2 ad. Sure, it's kind of funny, featuring two dudes ragging on one another. It gets across the idea that people can buy the game at Wal-Mart really fast, continuing the store's "fastest way to play" campaign. It does not, however, help us decide if Modern Warfare 2 is something we want to play. Granted, the readers and staff of Joystiq already know the answer to that particular quandary.

The company ran similar ads for Madden 09 and Madden 10, which certainly don't need in depth advertising to get people excited. Has Call of Duty reached Madden levels of recognition? Is the name the only marketing it needs at this point? Apparently, Wal-Mart thinks so. See the ad after the break.

I work at walmart, and it depends on how many copies they get. I am sure they are speculating a lot of sells with this so I imagine they will have enough. We still have left over special editions of cod5, people just didn't want those. I say you will most likely be fine, just call before midnight and ask if they got them in, sometimes games come a day later, usually they don't but it happens. If they don't know if they received them when you called, then they suck at their job.

Pretty funny. I didn't know wally world had a sense of humor. This is funnier than anything gamestop has put out.

That was actually pretty good. I'm surprised.

I had to laugh when he was revving that Escape. So weak...the boy clearly hasn't experienced the power and thrill of driving a big-block V8.

Of course, that would have sent him through the garage entirely...

Our marketing is very different from the rest of the world, but overall it can be good.

Of course, I could bring up some classic examples of failed marketing attempts by companies in other countries...like Electrolux.

Whatever. Walmart where I live takes forever to get games in. And I live in a College town.

Not to mention, you'd think Walmart would want to cater to all audiences, but they use an Xbox 360 to do that. I don't see a PS3 controller in his hands. Do you?

It would either be the xbox or the ps3, either way someone would complain.That said, COD and shooters in general tend to sell better on the 360, so I could see that being a factor in which version they used for the ad.

Xbox seems to be the new Playstation, most commercials on TV have been doing this for a while. Once you hear Obama telling parents to turn their kids Xbox's off, you know there is a big brand recognition, which makes sense since MS has been struggling to get the name out there. It seems to be a cultural thing too. Walmart prob knows the 360 has a higher install base in the US so they advertise with that, if it was Japan they'd be using a PS3. Nothing to get upset about dude, people are gonna buy it for whatever the chose for anyways. Walmart is not being a biased company, they are just doing business.

I now wish Walmart will use a generic controller to advertise games so I can avoid typing this ever again :P

As much as Sony did last generation? Funny you complain about the logo at the end when last gen it was all Sony. Now some games have different logos at the end, deal with it.
