In a story about the scarier games (it's almost Halloween, don'tchaknow?), Reuters mentioned two things we thought would be good for this website we got going here. First, there's Capcom's Resident Evil 5, which Reuters reports has managed to sell 1.94 million copies in the US, according to NPD Group figures.
The second part of the Reuters story talks about EA and its spookier titles for 2009: Left 4 Dead 2 and Dead Space: Extraction. While there isn't anything new on the former, in a discussion of the latter, Reuters revealed that Dead Space 2 is apparently planned for a 2010 release, which would seem to confirm what we've heard about the game so far.

So RE5 crushed Dead Space in sales? Wow, that's like when Guitar Hero used to outsell Rock Band.
Dead Space was a fresh and modern version of Resident Evil. The controls, the interface, and the pacing are perfect examples of how Resident Evil should be done today. RE5 feels like it was dragged kicking and screaming into the current console generation.

Fair enough. I was expecting to hear that it was trash. I wouldn't go to the extreme of saying RE5 was pure amazement, but it was a well built game. Dead Space did take you back into the older RE days though. Actually had me nervous at parts!

Really? I've never played System Shock but it's lauded as an achievement of atmosphere. Dead Space was very fun gameplay extremely similar to RE4, and while it had a decent atmosphere it was more jump scares than anything else.

Totally agree, the RE series needs a face lift. The controls and inventory system left a lot to be desired in RE5. It's a real shame too because it had a ton of potential to be a great game instead of a good one (in spite of it's flaws).
Seriously, why can't Chris walk AND shoot/reload/knife-attack/heal? Moving around feels like I'm controlling a tank.

Thought Dead Space was great, hope this one is a little bit scarier.
Also, really hope they get rid of that stupid sticky stuff on the floor that prevents you from running. I get that it is supposed to create and element of tension, but there is seriously no better way to spoil the mood than to force the gamer to slowly walk through a giant open space.

.....seriously? that happened for like 20 seconds out of the entire game.

20 seconds of FAIL. And it was almost never in an area with necromorphs, that was actually pretty rare. Youd just be strolling along and be slow for no reason. I agree on the scariness, after a certain point you just get a certain "if it bleeds we can kill it!" mentality, and it just becomes things in corners or behind doors popping out, the tensions and atmosphere of fear was really lost, but then I suppose that's pretty hard to get encourage that kind of attitude without making the player powerless

Short of going the Friday The 13th route and giving you nothing but rocks to throw, the fear effect really won't last once you start powering up all those awesome weapons.

I think the fright needs to come more from the environment than from the enemies. Dead Space is unmistakable degrees of magnitude better than Doom 3, but fuck if Doom 3 didn't get the horror aspect right. Even the [spoiler?] zombie level in Uncharted was a better example of horror in gaming. I'm not saying that Dead Space wasn't great, I'm just saying I hope they make it scarier.
And, seriously, I really do think those sticky-floor segments should be omitted. As The Dark Wayne / The Rurouni said, they are "20 seconds of FAIL" - they just aren't enjoyable and add little-to-nothing to the game. The main problem is that after you clear a room with the sticky floor if you want to do any exploring you're stuck at a snail's crawl. God forbid you want to backtrack through the room; it's misery. Maybe we can have a middle ground and somehow sci-fi-babble away the sticky floors after the battle.

Again, so glad they are going ahead with Dead Space 2. I have a feeling they will be rewarded with their commitment and the game will sell. Ya know, if it's as well done and polished as the first one obviously.
The sequel isn't even close to being released yet and it's already getting some good buzz that the first one lacked before it came out.
Pumped.

Agreed. It's almost like RE5 never really stood a chance. RE4 was mind blowing. One of the best games that generation, if not the best game. RE5 had a lot to live up to. Like you said, it wasn't bad or anything, just not really what I think most people were hoping for. A step back, indeed.

I'm stoked for a sequel! And with that ending, who DIDN'T see a sequel on the horizon?

Awesome, i was just going through it again recently for the achievements, and I really really loved it. The whole atmosphere and characters were so well done, probably the most realistic faces and human animations were just stellar. I wouldn't go as far as saying they were the best game actors ever, but damn if they werent great.
