Shepard shoots stuff in this Mass Effect 2 gameplay footage
G4 has a fresh new video of Mass Effect 2 goodness straight outta the space oven showing our good pal Shephard doing what he does best: shooting everything in sight. Your Shepard may be different, but for the sake of this post, Shepard is a man with a very itchy trigger finger, a lot of Renegade points and ... a very dirty space suit. It's dirty from all of the space blood!

Does anyone know if they are expanding on the planetary travel? That part was pretty boring in ME1.
RKN @ Oct 30th 2009 7:17PM
Yes they are, for one thing, they are adding more detail to some of the uninhabited planets that made them boring to explore in the first game.
Samuel Vimes @ Oct 30th 2009 7:18PM
Thanks RKN. That makes me very very happy.
Monica Dickey @ Oct 30th 2009 7:48PM
That's cool! The main hub place being the only cool planet was really a disappointment in the first ME. But I did enjoy the game a lot still. I hope the sequel gets it the credit it deserves.
philmcphail @ Oct 30th 2009 9:42PM
I hope they structure the missions better as well. I really didn't want to do the assignments knowing that you couldn't rely that much on the map and the journal (knowing that it would take forever).I spent so much of my time between each mission on the internet trying to figure out the locations/how to complete the assignments and missions :(
philmcphail @ Oct 30th 2009 9:49PM
Also, I should note the pace of the game. I know its a tactical RPG and all but I seriously think Shepherd should been able to move a bit faster OUTSIDE of combat. I don't know why he isn't able to run just from point A-B in the regular places such as the Citadel.
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 30th 2009 10:24PM
wow what a world of difference, when you simply just redesign the game's interface HUD.
This is looks fantastic, The camera is a bit closer as well i think.
Sandmonkey @ Oct 30th 2009 7:08PM
The game looks great! I can't wait for it, I've never played the first, but I am getting it tomorrow! HURRAH!
fohf @ Oct 30th 2009 7:10PM
Why the hell haven't you played the first one?
Samuel Vimes @ Oct 30th 2009 7:12PM
@Sandmonkey
You'll enjoy it, maybe even the planetary exploration. That was my only beef with the game. Otherwise it was really really awesome.
gst @ Oct 30th 2009 10:20PM
I never played the first either, and I probably should given my love for Bioware, but watching that has me a little confused.
I realize that it is generally classified as action/RPG or something of the sort, but what I saw looked like FPS/TPS-style point and shoot...just slower. Then again, a video of something like Oblivion would look like an FPS w/ swords and bows; videos of action/RPGs can be very deceiving.
What is the gameplay in Mass Effect most comparable to?
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 30th 2009 10:29PM
gears + kotor.
Jerk Face @ Oct 31st 2009 12:02AM
Sushi nailed it! That is the best description I've yet seen!
Nihilism98 @ Oct 30th 2009 7:11PM
I want this game. So much.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Oct 30th 2009 7:15PM
My God this game looks sexier every time I see it.
nriveraexpress @ Oct 30th 2009 7:16PM
looks great but whats with the reloading? i thought they explained why you did not have to in the first one, anybody know whats going on?
Samuel Vimes @ Oct 30th 2009 7:21PM
Well with more planets, races, etc it's possible that he came across a planet that uses ammunition still? I can't see them not having to reload, then having to reload all of a sudden in ME2 with ALL weapons.
Swifty @ Oct 30th 2009 7:51PM
According to the developers, you can now eject your heat sink and replace it instead of waiting for your weapon to cool down.
nriveraexpress @ Oct 30th 2009 8:14PM
oh really!? thats cool, but it does not explain the numbers on the side of the weapon, that does not look anything like a heat sink gauge
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Oct 30th 2009 8:53PM
Those numbers are definitely ammo counters. You can see them count down and then he reloads when they reach zero. It seems like they're trying to make it more familiar to shooter fans, but as Vimes said, hopefully it's only with certain weapons and not with all of them.
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 30th 2009 10:31PM
don't worry too much about it, most bioware games have some sort of in-game glossary to fully explain everything even in more detail than you ever wanted.
Antipilor @ Oct 31st 2009 1:11AM
As others have stated above I hope they don't require ammunition on all weapons. I definitely prefer having the ability to choose how often I need to stop firing. It would certainly detract from a part of the game that worked and worked well, which is the OPPOSITE of what you want to do. We REALLY don't need another generic shooter.
Alexanderon @ Oct 31st 2009 10:49AM
They said that special ammo---like the incendiary rounds he's using with his AR---is limited. You have to go out and buy it yourself. Normally you'll still have to reload, but only special ammo and weaponry (like the rocket launcher) are required to be bought. Frankly, it doesn't bother me at all. It was strange how you could amass a billion credits in Mass Effect and have nothing to spend it on. Colossus X armor is gotten through drops, and the Spectre weapons really aren't THAT expensive.
On the bright side, look at it this way: with special ammo and heavy weaponry we're going to get a much more in-depth combat system than what we saw in ME1. Either way, if buying ammo bothers you, you can opt to not use it.
cknblade @ Oct 31st 2009 11:10AM
It didn't seem like he was putting in a new clip. He just seemed to knock the side of the gun, maybe to adjust the heatsink or fix some mechanism propelling the slivers off of the ammo block...I don't remember the exact mechanics of how guns in ME work. They explained it in basic terms and it was something like a giant block of ammo serves as a clip, with some mechanism cutting off tiny slivers of the block, with a mass effect field propelling it forward at a massive velocity.
jekoln @ Oct 30th 2009 7:19PM
i've played a lot of RPGs, but the first game was hands down one of the best immersion experiences i've ever, ever seen in a game. can't wait for this.
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Oct 30th 2009 7:30PM
Mass Effect was great, but in all honesty, I thought Fallout 3 was much, much better of an RPG. Just my opinion, but everyone who's played Fallout 3 would have to admit it's one of the best games they've ever played.
Drew -- PS360: uphillbothways @ Oct 30th 2009 8:07PM
I own and have played both Fallout 3 and Mass Effect. They're both very good, and I think it's just a matter of opinion. I prefer Mass Effect.
Nathan-DTS [He is your father] @ Oct 30th 2009 8:12PM
I think we can all agree that Morrowind is the the best Western RPG.
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Oct 30th 2009 8:57PM
I own and have played both too, and I still prefer Fallout 3. Mostly because it was pretty obvious that some of the ships/stations/bases had identical layouts, just with different object configurations. It was disappointing to be excited about finding a stranded ship to explore, only to find out that it looks just like the last one. If they do it right with Mass Effect 2 though, I'm sure I'll be swayed.
Crayfish @ Oct 31st 2009 12:42AM
@Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You)
Would I really have to admit that, even if I don't believe it?
I played Fallout 3 and enjoyed it. But I wouldn't call it the greatest game I've ever played. Honestly, I think it was the combat that let it down for my tastes. I love turn-based and I'm pretty fond of FPS also (depending on the game), but Fallout 3's mixture of the two just didn't gel for me at all.
Course I don't know how ME stacks up to F3 in the greatness department either, seeing as I missed the boat originally, and never got around to picking it up. Might have to fix that this Christmas
spartanace1024 @ Nov 1st 2009 2:11PM
Honestly Fallout 3 just doesn't do it for me. I have a real problem with the stale animation that comes from Bethesda, it really pulls me out of the game. Not to mention seeing the same person every ten feet with the same voice. Although i do recognize they did address the issue going from Oblivion to Fallout 3. One thing i must give kudos for though, is the fact that Bethesda crafted a world in Fallout 3 that was rich in detail, and fun to explore. I just wish they would of had the same animators and voice talent from the people behind Mass Effect. The experience would have been much more captivating and immersive. In contrast, Bioware doe's story like none other in the video game business. Each element in there games really serves to contribute to the overall experience, rather than working against it. For example the way dialogue is done in Mass Effect is hands down some of the best dialogue I've ever seen in an rpg. It feels very fluid and immersive. I do admit though Mass Effect did have it's flaw's; dumb Ai, and boring planet exploration to name a few. But those flaws never really hurt the story in any way. When i want a good story i expect the people on screen to actually act and feel like people.
Bobs @ Oct 30th 2009 7:20PM
OMG WANT NAOW!
embassy @ Oct 30th 2009 7:31PM
Looks like they've been even more inspired by Gear's combat -- which is perfectly fine by me. I like that it seems you have a visual/sensory cue as to when you're taking damage, whereas in ME1 you could have 1-2 enemies attacking you out of view and wouldn't know unless you look down at you health meter. Plus simple fights like that seems more frantic and exciting, where before some fights seems kind of awkward and stilted.
I thank the improved framerate, audio and animations for this. Looking fantastic. Can't wait.
NickLott @ Oct 30th 2009 8:06PM
It really looks like they're approaching ME2 with more of a shooter mind set. This makes me wish they had a coop mode. Like a horde/survivor mode would be great with the different classes. I hope they surprise us with that.
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Oct 30th 2009 8:09PM
Freaking Borderlands in space. Awesome.
SixShooter @ Oct 30th 2009 8:14PM
Does anybody else think that the voice at 1:16 sounds like Bender from Futurama?
phobic99 @ Oct 30th 2009 9:04PM
I thought the same thing.
epsilon343 @ Oct 31st 2009 12:41AM
It's not out of the realm of possibility, he's done at least one video game voice over before as Marcus Fenix.
Mazrael @ Oct 30th 2009 8:15PM
Played this at EuroGamer Expo..plays pretty decent, just like the first game, although the demo only seemed to have Shepard as the soldier class.. I only feel at home as a Vanguard..
(other games.. AVP choppy framerate, 10-30fps, Dragonage - very nice on PC, little behind on 360.. not so much on PS3, ie, worst.. Heavy Rain screen tears 'heavily', my interest dropped, hopefully they can fix it.)
Azerael @ Oct 30th 2009 8:20PM
Whoever was playing was pretty damn bad O_o.
Avatar @ Oct 30th 2009 9:05PM
It's because the person wasn't playing on a PC. You can tell they're using a controller and sucking.
Azerael @ Oct 30th 2009 9:06PM
I played Mass Effect on the 360 and didn't have nearly the trouble they're having. It's like they've never played a video game before.
tylur_durden @ Oct 30th 2009 8:23PM
looks like shit
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Oct 30th 2009 8:43PM

I still hit it though.

You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake.
Collymilad @ Oct 30th 2009 9:56PM
Looks like it's going to be even better than the first one.
The atmosphere ME created was what made the game for me.
About Fallout 3, I don't see why the comparison is even made, but for me Fallout 3 was also amazing but it was spread more thinly. ME is a much more focused experience and for me this brought the quality above Fallout.
David Thomas @ Oct 30th 2009 10:17PM
The combat looks a lot more intense in this one. Correct me if I'm wrong but is there going to be more expanded slots for weapons or are we still looking at the standard pistol/shotgun/rifle configuration?
Anemos @ Oct 31st 2009 12:06AM
Killing Husks with rockets doesn't compensate for a lack of hair, Shepard.
