BOOOO! Borderland's one should have won! It is called a Pumpkin CARVING contest not a Pumpkin drawing contest. Not saying who ever made it didn't do a good job... they did and it looks amazing!! But in the end all s/he did was shave the pumpkin and cut out where the moon was really no talent in the carving aspect.

Wow, really!? You still felt the need to say that after about a hundred people already have? And no talent huh? Did you even look at it?

I would have taken the Boomer (for creativity), Dead Space Girl (obvious reasons), or Borderlands. Only because there was actual carving involved in those ones. The only time you should draw on a pumpkin is set guidelines to cut it.

Looks like the 11 million WOW players are pretty dedicated to getting anything WOW related to win something. Even if the person just drew on the pumpkin and called it a day.

Are people effing blind?! It was carved to death! This is just absurd, he used ink for details and the darkest of dark shadows, other than that it was all carved.

I think there was some major spamming of the voting here. Sure, that pumpkin is nice, but it's not a winner.

I didn't think WOW was that popular anymore. Ah well, I never got the point of MMO's.

"I didn't think WOW was that popular anymore."
Hahahaha. That's a good one! :P

Millions upon millions still play with a lot of people starting back up with the next expansion quite likely.

Though as far as the pumpkin itself goes. Joystiq does need to clarify it's rules next year, if only to appease the readership. Many of the orange spheres were great, so everyone's a winner in my book! /Mr.Rogers

Borderlands should have won. That other one was basically drawn and not carved. Its obvious there are more WoW members here who voted for it just because it was WoW.

I voted for the critter crunch throw up one. Even though the carving itself wasn't as good I thought it was the most original concept. As far as the complaints about pumpkin drawing and carving ... I agree that it's kind of against the spirit of pumpkin carving to ink most of the detail into the design. I think thats really not a carved pumpkin so much as it's a pseudo carved and heavily shaded pumpkin. That doesn't mean I think it sucks or that I think I could do better. It just means that it's kind of enhanced by having all the detail be inked.

People, if it was truly against the rules to use ink, Joystiq wouldn't have allowed inked pumpkins into the finalists. If you don't think it's in "the spirit of pumpkin carving" to use ink, then I guess that's your opinion, but nobody should try to pretend that it's "cheating". That the inked pumpkins are included in the contest at all (as well as the use of shirts and other props in other entries which aren't being protested) is proof that, despite wording, this contest /was/ a general "pumpkin art contest".

Please, it's not as if the inked pumpkins are only or even mostly inked. There's still plenty of detail that has been carved, including carved at different depths. If you legitimately thought the Borderlands or any other pumpkin took more skill, that's one thing, but it's ridiculous to have voted on the basis that the inked ones were somehow ineligible, and it's even more ridiculous to keep protesting it now.

It's as if people are claiming the Worgen pumpkin is somehow bad just because ink was used. While the Borderlands pumpkin is also amazing, I just preferred the overall creativity used in the Worgen one. It's an overall combination of ink and carving that makes for a very impressive pumpkin. The fact is, as you said, is that a lot of it was carved, to create depth and detail, as well as make a very bright moon(sun?). The Borderlands one also did amazing with detail, but I just preferred the Worgen one.

And now there's this conspiracy that there are a bunch of WoW nuts voting for it merely because it's WoW. I voted for the Worgen pumpkin before I even realized what game it was from. I don't play WoW and the only Blizzard game I wank to is Starcraft.

The winners look great, but they are more like drawings than they are carvings

I am jealous of every ones mad skills. Borderlands one should have won simply because it was completely carved. I don't care if the artist inked THEN carved, he still carved. The WoW is mostly drawn (inked). Artist should have carved the inked parts too. If I was the Borderlands finalist I would feel jipped as fuck.

Any who, congrats to all contestants

Inking may be questionable, but it sure does look good. What impresses me is the "shading". I couldn't wrap my head around that as I tried to do this from Uninvited on the NES: http://content.ytmnd.com/content/9/f/d/9fdffd5ed61bc75f3dd3873fe656a0c9.jpg

"video game-themed pumpkin carving"

Granted nothing was said that ink or props couldn't be used, it was still kind of cheating. It just wasn't in the spirit of pumpkin carving.

The inking didn't bother me too much but the fact that most of te good ones like the winner were obviuosly laser engraved. It's very easy to do at an engraving or trophy shop

Is inking allowed? Everybody is complaining against it, if so why is Joystiq allowing these entries to win?
