In my opinion, the materia system was the best because you were able to make your favorite character the best character.I like the fact that as long as you used the materia it leveled. The sphere grid had you "waste turns" just to get where you wanted to be.I hope this new system allows you the freedom of choice more than that.

Sphere Grid, but without the difficulties of actually being on a grid (and, like Jose said, having to waste levels to move around), seems like it could be a good idea, if that's what it ends up being

I wouldn't say Talent points, because it's a system that has been around well before WoW.

Sounds like Champions of Norrath, which is like Diablo 2, which is like every other hack and slash these days. Same as Borderlands and so forth. Skill trees are incredibly awesome when done right.

Examples of it done wrong? Untold Legends on PSP. Each rank up added less than a percent of performance per rank. Was sooooo lame.

Not that interested anymore! Looking at the latest generation of games it's obvious FF will be crippled by their limitations needed to make it cross platform. If this game doesn't come on 5 DVD's for the 360 I'm not that interested anymore

Lost Odyssey came on 4 DVDs, so this is entirely possible.

Wikipedia say:
PlayStation 3:
JP: December 17, 2009
EU / NA 2010
Xbox 360: EU / NA 2010
Guess the Japanese won't be getting a 360 version. Good thinking. Japanese players hate the 360.

Ah yes, I read that there are some people in Japan who own a 360 and even a story about a 78 year old man who plays FPSs:

I'd just like to see another main series Final Fantasy game with a job system like FFV's. It actually makes grinding in it enjoyable! Certainly the most absorbing level progression system I've ever seen, and everything since has been a regression. The sphere grid in FFX just seemed kind of superficial and not paticularly revoloutionary. Sure, it looked fancy, but ultimately, it was a rather narrow skill progression tree, like the ones in Diablo or any other WRPG.

I know, that's the exact reason why I brought it up. Leave something like that alone long enough and everyone will think Warcraft invented it. I try to demoralize the WoW troops the best I can, ruffle their feathers and hope they open their eyes to a much more beautiful world of gaming. Ya know, everything else.

I guess in all fairness though, Blizzard made Diablo 2 and Warcraft...

id be a fan of the system mainly involving what you do with a character in battle. if you use fire spells more then sooner or later fira comes out. if you use attacks more certain skills come out. from those certain skills used, enhancements on those comes out. basically enhance what you practice. it still would be a sphere grid in a way but it would be done by whats actually being done in battle.

There won't be character progression on the 360 because it would take up too many DVDs.

This news makes the game that much more worthy of my money. I loved the Sphere Grid and was put off by FFXII as a whole, but FFXIII is starting to sound like my FF.

I would like to see the the ff6 relic system come back. You could do some cool combos with that system. The magic diversity in that game was cool too, some of the magic combos you could do were killer.

Just bring back the Materia system, the best character progression system in any Final Fantasy game, or any JRPG for that matter, there has ever been. Better yet, just bring back FFVII!

It sounds interesting enough, I suppose. As long as everybody doesn't end up like clones of each other a la FFVIII and X, I'm all for it.

The best character progression systems have been in IX and, to an extent, it was VII's best feature (one of the few).

Then you'd have to date it all the way back to Feats of PnP RPGs. But seriously--they're just minor semantics.

tl;dr: You kill things and get stronger. There's just some intermediate step you need to spend hours and hours slogging through in order to do it.

I like the grid/board stat boosts. If they're made epic enough, they can provide a huge level of character variety (as far as abilities and stats). The Sphere Grid was cool, and eventually reached the point to where you characters were spanned across the grid, sharing the same moves and stats. The License Board in XII was very similar, but somewhat less linear (while the boards were the same, you weren't limited to one path at the start, they just threw you in a recommended spot). Still, I didn't think it was very practical in comparison to the Grid.

I'd like to see some minor implementations of Vagrant Story in these games. Not the whole deal (it was a bit convoluted), but it good ideas, like weapon masteries and affinities (as long as the affinity changes were less random, somehow). That allowed for equipment to be made for different situations, which, while it forced variety, worked very well in the context of the game. It minimized the need to grind, so I wouldn't have to fight dragons all day to get my weapon to offset the loss in it's power against them for the next boss. However, random stat increases are not the best idea.

@Olicon: To be fair, "Feats" showed up in DnD 3rd Edition only in year 2000. Talent trees in electronic RPGs are a little older than that if I'm not mistaken. You could talk about Vampire: The Masquerade's Disciplines though which dates from early 90s.

Why have all this pointless fluff?

The player shouldn't be choosing the skills. The characters should develop themselves. That is good character development, story, plot, etc...

Have an experience based system. When the character levels up, he gets predetermined stat increases and ability/spells.

Honestly, the "talent point" system is fine for MMOs, due to actual different needs. But for a single player RPG, a system giving choice to the player is just deceptive, since there is really only one way a character should be developed....the best way. And this "best way" should just be coded into a single straight level based path.

Why the fluff of a "tree" based system.....waste of time
