Cage explains why PS3 is 'the best platform' for Heavy Rain
With Quantic Dream's previous (and very weird) Indigo Prophecy available on multiple platforms, many gamers have been curious as to why Heavy Rain is a PS3 exclusive. PushSquare reports that Quantic Dream's David Cage -- once again -- explained the reasoning behind the game's exclusivity at the Eurogamer Expo. He first noted that any answer he gave would be "suspicious," but further explained that the PS3 hardware is "extremely powerful," adding, "If you make a real PS3 engine, then you can have really fantastic performances." He elaborated that porting to the Playstation 3 from other platforms "becomes difficult" (something we've heard before).
Beyond technical reasons, Cage said that the team at Quantic Dream loves the console. "I play PSOne, PS2, it's really a part of my culture," said Cage. Cage also added that realistic graphics aren't necessary to create emotional characters, but noted that the goal of Heavy Rain was to create truly believable characters. "With this approach," said Cage, "PS3 was by far the best platform."
Given what we've seen of Heavy Rain thus far, we'd be hard-pressed to argue.

This game looks pretty but the uncanny valley is quite uncanny.

Just because you read about "uncanny valley" in an internet article doesnt mean every realistic looking game is bad or creepy.

the xbox is nearly as powerful. down vote me all u want, but i don't see any reason why this cant be ported to 360. it would most likely sell more on 360.

I really don't see how you can argue with a developer that has experience with both platforms. Most devs pick the 360 to develop for because of it's ease of use, which is admittedly something I'm envious of as a PS3 fan, but I've had a feeling, even when I was undecided about which console to pick, that the PS3 would end up difficult to develop for (based on quotes about the PS2) but would ultimately be able to achieve superior results when those results were striven for.
Verrin @ Nov 2nd 2009 6:20PM
Comparing the PS3 to the 360 is apples and oranges, my trolly compatriot. Athough, apples and oranges are pretty similar, don't you think? They're both sweet, round, fruit, and delicious! But, you know what I mean-- developing the same game individually for each system would give drastically difference results than developing for the 360 and porting to the PS3-- and it would probably be more favorable for Sony's hardware.
Wes @ Nov 2nd 2009 7:50PM
I don't think its comparing apples and oranges.
I think its like comparing oranges grown in California to Mandarin Oranges. Either way, the taste is pretty similar and if you don't have a lot of experience eating either type or orange, you might not notice the difference.
However, if you've only eaten Mandarin Oranges your whole life, Californian oranges might taste special if you give it a try.
Contrarily, if your afraid to try the new taste, your missing out.
Anyways, yeah xbox 360s almost consistently run faster than PS3 games in most cross platform titles. When titles are developed for PS3 first then ported to xbox 360, they seem to often end up running equal speed.
Honestly, it makes me a bit curious why exactly people feel abitrarily attached to the rumors the PS3 has a powerful beast under the hood we have yet to see unleashed! People really also seem to jump on that only-possible-on-the-ps3 rumor. You know, anything that runs on a ps3/xbox 360 can be easily and superiorly done on a PC. If you wanted top notch visual quality, heavy rain should be being powered by 2x5870x2s or maybe 2 Fermis whenever it gets released.
Even Notty Dog? I think that's the developers name stated themselves that Uncharted 2 maxed out the PS3. Sooo yeah, there's no more hidden power left as far as they are concerned. Uncharted 2 doesn't look that-amazing that there aren't comparable titles on the xbox 360 for visual quality. Seriously, its about time to admit the systems are pretty much about equal.
Even the guy above who stated 'DVD'. Damn that's an old argument that's been countered OHH, OHH, OHHHHH so many many times. Blu-ray discs read about the slower than the dvd rom drive in the xbox 360. As a result, a lot of blu-ray games have the data doubled or tripled to lower seek times and allow more reading per pass. Then if you add that + uncompressed textures, it removes the advantage. Most xbox 360 games look almost identical texture wise to ps3 games when you compare titles available on both systems. If anything, the textures on the dvd-version using compressed textures can sometimes look better. Not always, but sometimes.
I do admit though, I think the next-next generation of video consoles that uses a new more powerful video card that can actually render in true 1080p should really come with a high definition storage medium so games can be around 40GB /w compressed textures to allow nice, long, great looking titles. Versus great looking but rediculously short titles (Read: 6 hours of Heavenly Sword, ...WTH? That was it? is how I felt when I passed that game).
LameDuck @ Nov 2nd 2009 8:05PM
We all know what exclusives come down to when it's between the PS3 and 360. Money and loyalty. That is all.
Both platforms are even. Don't start with this cell bullshit again. If you knew anything about processors you can tell where the Cell fails and why Sony needs to find a processor more suited for gaming needs. Does that make the PS3 a failure? No. Does that make fantards that scream "DE CELLZ!!!!" in EVERY PS3 post a failure? Yes.
It is cheaper to make a game for one system and push it as being the next coming when, in reality, it is another over-hyped, overly complicated medicore game on par with Killzone 2. (Which I liked, BTW, but it's not the "jizz yourself" graphics they want you to believe it has.)
Need proof? Look at the first game videos. A uber-poly character in scene with a static image behind it. I could make FF7 look like God of War with only one character and a static background. The more recent videos and screenshots are getting more to reality and less to hype.
Beside the point, I think this game is going to be decent, but I'm afraid it's going to end up being another The Bouncer without the cute girls and fighter tack-on.
Indefinite Implosion @ Nov 2nd 2009 8:23PM

dave @ Nov 2nd 2009 9:20PM
Yeah, it could probably be ported to the 360, but the graphics engine would most likely have to be written from scratch. That's a heap of development time that would delay the game release. I'm sure they'd like to get some money rolling in pretty soon.
Someone mentioned Uncharted 2 maxing out the PS3. Not likely. Sure, it may be one of the few games that actually uses all the SPEs at once, but that doesn't mean that things can't be improved. After all, the PS2 only had one cpu (ok, and two vector units), and each generation of games just kept on improving and improving. I expect the same to happen with the PS3 (and the 360 too).
Caveman @ Nov 2nd 2009 9:21PM

"Uncharted 2 doesn't look that-amazing that there aren't comparable titles on the xbox 360 for visual quality."
Now, see, I agree with the rest of your post, but this, this just isn't the case. Whether it's the animation or the level of detail in every locale you end up visiting... Uncharted: Among Thieves is on another level. I have yet to play a 360 game that matches up, visually.
Or gameplay wise, for that matter. That's a debate for another day, though.
oldmanpip @ Nov 2nd 2009 11:07PM
@wes - you're technically correct but technically incorrect.
It's easy to "max out" a console, all you'd need to do would write some buggy software that has an infinite sort of loop and it would effectively use up all the resources of the console. That doesn't mean it's optimally used. Naughty Dog stated themselves that while they maxed out the console, the maximum use of the PS3 won't be realised for another 2 or so years they believe.
Just saying that the PS3 still has ways to go, while the Xbox360 is limited based on my knowledge of the two systems. Based on this, the PS3 would theoretically be a better platform than the Xbox360.
You also mentoned the Blu-ray/DVD debate, and even if the data was tripled on the blu-ray to make the access times equal to the DVD, Blu-ray would still be able to hold almost 4x the amount of data as a DVD.
Lastly, they could develop Heavy Rain for the PC using top of the grade graphics etc., but very few people could use it. Developing a game for the PS3 is the balance between having a very good console that can deliver top-notch graphics, yet ensuring that all of its users can access the game and are able to run it.
So no, I believe that if the developers program specifically for the PS3 it will end up being superior to the Xbox360 version as that version will hit the performance roof quicker than the PS3 version.
sc00by_y00 @ Nov 3rd 2009 1:06AM
wes do you know where your whole argument falls down ?
Do you seriously think that Quantic Dreams havent run tests on the 360 ?
I guarantee you they have and they obviously didn't like the results.
Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 have already buried the argument the ps3 is the more powerful console. Accept it, why do you guys keep on trying to flip it ?
the architecture is very different you have:
the cell ppe -- cpu
the cell spe -- cpu + gpu
nvidia rsx --gpu.
It is also very similar if you ignore the spes you are left with the cell ppe which is the exact same as the xbox360 cpu and you have the ati graphics card for 360.. To do a cheap port if you ignore the cell spe's you can port to the ps3 -- a triple core 360 to a single core ppe obviously the 360 ports will end up better.. As soon as they begin using the spes it buries the 360..
This was always the case it has been proved time and time again by ps3 exclusives. Just look at Uncharted 2 name me one xbox360 game that comes close, the graphics dont look that good ? Seriously ? Who are you trying to fool exactly ?
Seriously how can these same arguments exist post uncharted, uncharted 2, post killzone 2 ?
bemaggg @ Nov 2nd 2009 6:07PM

I'm really at a loss for words on why the ps3 fanbois are raging so hard. Why downvote when someone doesn't either dismiss or praise your game? Relax the hell out.
IMO... games that try to approach this level of realism look silly. Good game or bad game. Not trying to argue it. Don't like an opinion? Cry moar.
Alphathon @ Nov 3rd 2009 6:04AM
I don't know about anyone else (whith the possible exception of Spyder), but personally I hold your using of "y" instead of "why" against you. Then you specifically use the word "HALO" instead of "hello" which just shouts "Xbox 360 fanboy" (if you just wanted to type wstar why didn't you type helo?). Finally, none of your post actually seem to have any relevent content. Yeah, you mentioned the uncanny valley, but it is no more in the uncanney valley than any other 3d game ever released. the reasons things fall into said "valley" is that either they look really real but the movement isn't at all natural or they look very almost real, but theres just something about them which you just can't put your finger on that's "wrong", be it that the "flesh" doesn't quite pick up the light correctly, or eyes have a blank stare (because believe it or not you can tell when someone is focusing on you, which androids etc don't do in the same way we do) or whatever. No game I have ever seen falls into the uncanney valley, mainly because they don't look real enough. Thye may look verry real, but you can still tell they are rendered in a game engine. so you don't notice the small imperfections mentioned bacause you don't expect it to look convincing (you aren't fooled into thinking it's real)

Kleptomaniac @ Nov 2nd 2009 6:09PM
I think being exclusive to PS3 helps because only having one platform to worry about means they can spend more time on story rather than worrying about porting and how the game runs across each platform.
As for the graphics, I think they have a hard job because they are going after the extremely realistic look and that means low poly items and low res textures are more noticeable so once again only having one platform is a bonus because they can exploit its power more effectively.
I am really looking forward to this game! Don't really mind about the complaints of it being more like a movie than a game because I really liked I.P and I have sat through all the cutscenes in MGS4....multiple times.
TreyIM @ Nov 2nd 2009 6:23PM
Yea, the PS3 is by far a dev's "dream" because of the tech AND the disc space. Also, u need to do a data install that ALL PS3 can utilize? Go right ahead since ALL PS3 SKUs have included HDDs. These are the advantages of the PS3 over all current consoles. The tech part can be debatable because utilizing it is definitely based on talent and resources but he does have a point about porting from the 360 to the PS3. Shouldn't be done but because of the "ease" of devving on a 360, first, to get a game up and running quicker, devs go that route more so than using the PS3 as the lead system. This is why I HATE multiplatforming, these days. Devs are NOT using the full potential of the PS3 where as u see the beauty of exclusives for the PS3, especially first party games. Devs WANT a challenge when they have the time and resources to really flesh out games they always wanted. Unfortunately, most times, devs are under the gun and the fact that they have to dev for multiple systems isn't something they really enjoy.
I don't think the 360 can do what the PS3 can and now that the PS3 is really ramping up it's install base at a hot rate with the price drop, I hope to see more exclusives on the PS3 since devs now can't use that silly argument about install base inferiority. While I don't hate on the 360, I just want devs to push my PS3. It's not our fault that the 360 is what it is.
Bottom line to all that ramble - I like Mr. Cage because he speaks the truth. HE'S the type of dev that all devs should be similar to.

It would still be nice to see a 360 port in the future though.
They managed to port things from the Gamecube to the PS2 (Resident Evil 4, Tales of Symphonia spring to mind), and the difference in power between those systems was far more than the difference between the PS3/360.
Here's hoping the PS3 version sells really well so all the 360 owners can enjoy it too!
