Prince of Persia movie trailer looks ... kind of good
The first official trailer for Jerry Bruckheimer's The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now up for all the internet to see [update: we've added our embedded version above -- and read our in-depth analysis right here]. The long and short of it, it actually looks pretty good. Of course, the trailer is comprised mainly of quick cuts of action and narration filled with cliched adventure story tropes. Then again, as a video game adaptation, maybe that's to be expected.
Still, there doesn't appear to be anything overtly awful just yet, so the hope is still alive. If Bruckheimer can turn a theme park ride into a successful film franchise, maybe, just maybe, he can do it with a game too.

it looks good in the trailer (max payne) but sucks ass when it comes out
Abi @ Nov 3rd 2009 7:52AM
It freakin sounds like him too.
Reinard @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:36PM
Looks like they're throwin' in some Two Thrones there, too. At least, I swear I saw some Dark Prince action goin' on.
Hyams @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:44PM
Yeah, I saw that too.
And his appearance is based off the Prince's Warrior Within look (although his personality is thankfully closer to his Sands of Time incarnation).
Blank-Mage @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:50PM
I think Penny Arcade put it best: "I smolder with generic rage."
Kyle @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:28PM
When they spoke about taking the dagger to some temple it looked like it had a bit of Warrior Within flavouring, too.
PsyGuy @ Nov 2nd 2009 8:21PM
The Trailer looks very good IMO, regardless if the movie is a hit or sucks, I'll still see it in theatres because of the trailer. If for nothing else, Im a huge fan of the SoT,Two Thrones, Warrior withing and this gens PoP. It does look look like an imitation of most Sci-Fi's post LoTR, but as long as im entertained watching it, I'll be happy if they stay true to the story, even if that means leaving my brain at the door.
Hopefully the trilogy will get released on XBLA/PSN before the film comes out, I owned them on XBoX and they still remain my most favored games of all time, until The Big black box's power supply died out out on me :(
Longhorn @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:36PM
looks epic, maybe Hollywood has learned how to make a video game movie
nofriendo @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:32PM
Really?
Mal F4cti0n @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:54PM
Doubt it....taking the dagger "to the secret guardian temple" is just a tit bit too cliche for most moviegoers.
ifalldownstairs @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:59PM
Yeah, the line about the "secret guardian temple" made me cringe.
That, and the absurd lines that I think were trying to reinforce sexual tension.
Avatar @ Nov 2nd 2009 6:49PM
You mean the flirty back and forth? That's to attract chicks. They eat that shit up. Back me up, Saria.
MOT @ Nov 3rd 2009 5:00AM
@ Mal:
I agree. The "take item Z from point A to point B and do X with it" storyline reached it's peak in the Lord of the Ring movies.
Heh @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:37PM
8/10
Trailer wasn't bad at all. Some camera pans were used oddly, but overall..solid 8/10
DamonTheMoney @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:38PM
Well it looks good to me. And what's the harm in keeping an open mind? If it's good then enjoy it, if it's not then accept it.
Psycho2 @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:39PM
Not sure if want....
RanWitScissorz @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:42PM
That actually looks...pretty good.
Hyams @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:42PM
Anyone else feel like they've just watched the entire film?
Geoff900 @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:46PM
For me, it wasn't just like watching it, it was like watching it getting the T-Shirt, and watching the same bits over and over and over and over.
Oh, and you know whats going to happen.
They should do this as a film.

:-)
Chromekreeper @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:43PM
we should still keep our expectations low, b/c then we will be blown away when we find out it isnt completely bad (heres hoping)
Durden @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:43PM
I don't know... I kept waiting for Brendan Frasier to pop up with a cheesy 1 liner.
CheeziePotato @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:04PM
Haha WIN
nofriendo @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:28PM
Why is Disney making me watch Aladin again?
Blank-Mage @ Nov 2nd 2009 7:54PM
Because they can get you to pay for it?
mr nimblewick @ Nov 2nd 2009 11:10PM
I would pay for Aladdin again. Unless it was Aladdin... in 3D!
Cyro @ Nov 6th 2009 1:28PM
lol!
Ridgecity @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:45PM
This generation is pretty hard to please. It wouldn't surprise me if the day rapture happens, some kids will say:
"LOOKS FAKE!!!!"
Ringo @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:12PM
hehe you said rapture
Blank-Mage @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:46PM
Hmm, I think the number of 'we're totally not in love' witty banter lines was a tad high, and I'm positive I'm going to be sick of what's-her-name by the end of the movie. All in all, this trailer reminds me a little too much of alot of OTHER trailers I've seen for video game movies that blew. I don't have high hopes. Sorry, Jerry.
Knives @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:47PM
Jake Jyllenhall seems autistic, and that's awesome. I always imagined the prince as being slightly retarded, what with wearing a white jammy and how he keeps humping walls when he tries to climb up a ledge.
...or was it just me?
Blank-Mage @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:53PM
You just made the Persia games so much more fun for me. Thank you.
Candlejack @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:47PM
First video game adaption that might actually be good? Could this be to video game movies what Halo was to console FPS's? I guess we'll just see.
RogueJedi86 @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:11PM
Mortal Kombat was good 14 years ago. Silent Hill was good 3 years ago. We've had good video game movies before.
Huey2k2 @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:26PM
@RogueJedi86
I guess that depends on what your definition of "good" is.
I liked Mortal Kombat when I was a kid, I can still watch it now and nostalgia, but as far as it being a well made movie, it definitely is not. I've never seen the Silent Hill movie so I can't really comment on it, but I have heard a lot of negative things.
As far as I am concerned there hasn't really been a real solidly made and engrossing video game movie yet.
bigphil2003 @ Nov 3rd 2009 5:53AM
Silent Hill was good? I must have watched a different movie. Just because Sean Bean was in it doesn't mean it was actually good.
Taylor @ Nov 3rd 2009 9:29AM
Silent Hill is one of my favorite horror movies to this day. It is a great movie.
That One Guy With The Hat @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:48PM
Even with that low quality video.. the bad CGI bleeds through.
Sandmonkey @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:53PM
It looks OK, a decent action film, but I think they are sailing a FailBoat, look at all the other VG Movies, Silent Hill? Facepalm. Doom? Hell No. But I am judging a movie that didn't come out yet, we will see if this is a Shawshank Redemption, or a Winnie the Pooh's Halloween.
Blank-Mage @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:05PM
I think Silent Hill was okay, but then again, as long as you throw some seriously messed up stuff in there, you're pretty much on the right track. And they had burnt screaming children and that janitor guy. So, not bad.
Doom would have been GREAT if it had any resemblance to being Doom. (I imagine they had to scrap the plot because Hell is, evidently, a touchy subject. So no Cube artifact, no teleporter filled with eyes, and no Cyber Demon in a twisted fiery hell-scape. No, it's just genetic mutation!)
RogueJedi86 @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:13PM
I don't know what you're smoking, Silent Hill was awesome. It worked both as a standalone horror movie, and as a faithful videogame adaptation. It helps that it was co-developed by the Japanese creators of Silent Hill, with its score being done directly by the composer for the series.
Blank-Mage @ Nov 2nd 2009 4:58PM
God, now I've started thinking about Resident Evil: Apocalypse again. I have scars that will NEVER heal from that. They had Nemesis CRYING. He isn't even supposed to one of those eyes! What with it being SEWN SHUT, and the other being COMPLETELY WHITE! F***ing KUNG FUing zombies! Messing with canon, and s**! So damn ANGRY!
Titan @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:07PM
Tell us how you really feel....
Blank-Mage @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:11PM
I would, but it would be difficult to spell in some places, and the rest would get me ban hammered.
OmegaNemesis28 @ Nov 3rd 2009 6:25PM
Wow - Blank, you're about the only other person I know who feels the same way about me. Or at least gives a damn about Nemesis.
hhhenryhhh @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:01PM
anyone else saw Goemon and thought of Prince of Persia?
Noiravla @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:05PM
Anyone else think it looks like they took alot of camera shot ideas straight out of Assassins Creed?
RogueJedi86 @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:16PM
To be fair, Assassin's Creed was clearly influenced by the Prince of Persia trilogy, so either this is PoP returning the favor to AC, or it's PoP taking influence from PoP, with Assassin's Creed stealing some of the glory in-between.
clanboru15 @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:27PM
I am hoping that this done well enough for people to think that an Assassin's Creed movie would be a good idea.
xtremeholymuffin @ Nov 2nd 2009 5:40PM
They're both Ubisoft. Jeez.
