Prince of Persia movie trailer looks ... kind of good
99
The first official trailer for Jerry Bruckheimer's The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now up for all the internet to see [update: we've added our embedded version above -- and read our in-depth analysis right here]. The long and short of it, it actually looks pretty good. Of course, the trailer is comprised mainly of quick cuts of action and narration filled with cliched adventure story tropes. Then again, as a video game adaptation, maybe that's to be expected.
Still, there doesn't appear to be anything overtly awful just yet, so the hope is still alive. If Bruckheimer can turn a theme park ride into a successful film franchise, maybe, just maybe, he can do it with a game too.

Just remember, though. Spider-Man 3 had one of the best trailers of all time, and we all know how that turned out.

Yeah, but that's what happens when you make Venom into a PANSY.

Also, Tobey Maguire has the stupidest 'crying face' of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Why did they use a san-serif typeface for this movie? Doesn't even fit it at all.

every medieval/fantasy/sword-play movie of the last few years has been a Lord of the Rings clone in at least a few ways

The subtitle on the first promotional poster looks like "The Sands of Tim"
Tim sounds like a nice guy :D

The Prince of Persia.
a.k.a. Tim.
Actually has a nice ring to it. Very pythonesque. From now on, I will call this character Tim.

Wait so Donnie Darko is the Prince of Persia?

That typeface is ridiculous. I like modern, clean typefaces as much as anyone else, but not for a movie about dirty sweaty people fighting in the desert centuries ago.

That looks suprisingly good. Although, I suppose you can make any film look cool in a short trailer. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm certainly willing to go see the film when it comes out, just because the Prince is such a great character.

Wow. That looks surprisingly good. The acting and writing didn't seem overly irritating at any point, which for a Bruckheimer joint is a bit of a shock. The writing (and what we could see of Gyllenhaal's performance) seemed pretty much right on for the character and the tone in general. As it's Bruckheimer and Disney I see no reason the effects would be bad, so we might have some hope here. :P

Looks incredibly not-awful. Secret Guardian Temple was a little lame, but even Pirates had some pretty lame parts.

While it looks good, especially for a videogame to movie trailer, it just seems like I've seen this type of movie a billion times over, such as The Mummy, which sticks out the most for me, in terms of "reminding me of". Then again, most movies seem to repeat the same cliched scripts over and over so I won't mind checking this one out. Really doesn't look bad, at all, based on that trailer.Hopefully it will be one of the great videogame movies. So far, only Silent Hill earned a "not too bad" from me. The rest of em, eeeehhhhh...

Am I the only one that found Hitman entertaining? Not the greatest Movie ( I'm not a fan of Timothy Olyphant, but he did a okay job) Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie? it was GREAT and Chun Li shows a lil T&A...lol Tomb Raider was decent if not good an a box office sucess, Silent Hill was a great horror movie, decent video game based movie, Mortal Kombat was great at the time it came out (I was 13, although Annihilation sucked and ruined the enjoyment of 1st movie IMO,) and Resident Evil 1 was good if it wouldn't have been related to RE (rename Umbrella Corp, the characters, etc) And RE2 and 3 suck but the zombie Crow scene was one of the coolest Ive seen in the RE movies (forgot which one it was in, almost made up for the fact the movie sucked in my opinion.

Eh the trailer was pretty lame if you ask me. I think it was the girl's awful narration. It was so redundant. I can just picture her narrating every single thing the Prince does in the film. Other than that it looks like a decent summer film.

For the simple fact that Jerry Broke-heimer uses the same damn musical score for every film he makes, I won't go see this movie....Ok maybe I'll go see it but I may need to puncture my ear drums when he starts his whole staccato string section of the action sequences.

I loved this series personally, and if they ruin it's rep I'm going to be pissed. Hopefully, I say this for everyone, that this doesn't turn out to be as bad as doom. If that's even possible.

Oh, it's possible. "Alone in the Dark."

So yeah, I guess its a matter of opinion. But damn I didn't know anything could get as bad as doom, that's pure Hollywood shit right there.

Spoilers:
She is. She's a Terminator sent by a Vizier in the distant future to seduce the Prince and subsequently kill him in his moment of vulnerability. See, the dagger is actually from that same future, and only exists in that time period because she brought it there. (Who the hell did you THINK built it? We didn't even know the Earth was round back then, let alone the intricacies of inter-temporal travel and communications.) The climactic battle between man and sexy machine is waged, Prince destroys her and the dagger, and then re-starts the franchise as a cell-shaded character before learning the distant future Vizier is HIMSELF.
And none of that is true. But I believe it.

Oh, and before any of you ask "But if the Vizier is the Prince, why would he want to kill himself" go read Fate Stay/Night, it'll all make sense.

While it will undoubtedly end up being a generic, mildly fun typical action flick, this is a huge step in terms of quality for video game movies.

Looks great to me!
Sure, it's a Bay-like action movie with plenty of amazing CGI, 'suspenseful' tension, and acrobatic stunts -- but that's what I like to see in theaters.
I'm sold on this one -- Bruckheimer and Disney know how to make these films down to a science. And I'm sure Jerry's been watching "Transformers" and going, "Man, I can one-up this easy."
While us Americans won't have too much beef with Jake -- I have to think AT LEAST some people are going to be offended by him playing the "Prince of Persia."
