Japan Studios has had little impact on the PlayStation software library this generation. The platform's greatest hits so far have, instead, come from America and Europe. Titles like Uncharted, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, God of War, and WipEout all come from various studios at SCEA and SCEE. But what has Japan Studio created thus far? Siren, Trash Panic, and The Eye of Judgment -- noteworthy games perhaps, but hardly a collection of system-selling blockbusters.
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida explained to Gamasutra that "their focus was shifted onto the PSP, which reflects the success of the PSP as a platform in Japan ... It's completely opposite of the way how US and European teams moved onto working on the PS3 and we see the fruits of those efforts, while Japan studios shifted their focus onto the PSP." Of course, handheld owners have much to be thankful for: system-defining hits like Patapon and LocoRoco were created out of Japan Studio's dedication to the platform.
However, the next year (and beyond) should be very different for Sony's Japanese developers. With The Last Guardian and Gran Turismo 5 coming from Sony's other Japanese studios, the pressure is on for other developers to follow suit. "We are now re-energizing teams and coming up with new ideas for PS3 development," Yoshida said. "We'll be able to show fruits of this work sometime next year."

I was importing dynasty warriors gundam 2 for my little brother from hkofferhouse and i ordered siren new translation on a whim. it was only 30$ for every episode, in their unedited form, in complete english text and audio. this was months ago before the price on psn dropped for the recent halloween sale. I also prefer having the game on disc.
But thats besides the point. I guess my point is that i haven't played anything significant from these guys on ps3, and also that i went to universal studios a while back and saw crash bandicoot. I was just bummed i didnt have a camera.

oh, I just checked the case and it is From Software that I was thinking of, but I could swear when Demon's Souls loads up it does say JapanStudio, maybe just because it is exclusive.

Yeah, Japan Studio publishes Demon Soul's, doesn't it?
That's a significant contribution to this year's collection of excellent ps3 titles.

That's a pretty weak list when your other partners bring Uncharted 1&2, Killzone 2, and God of War 3 to the table, as well as other AAA games.

Sorry, write my comment without read yours.
Looks like we both were wrong, the developer was Game Republic, it seems they only published it.

The Last Guy got an expansion? When? I enjoyed that for what it was, but would have liked to seen it fleshed out more.

I would like to see a version of Patapon come to the PS3. It looks like a really intriguing game, but I just don't have any need for a handheld.

Have to go with tmac on this one, those may be interesting niche downloadable games, but they really don't hold their own against AAA retail releases.

Can anyone tell me why Folklore isn't in that list?
Of course it didn't have great sales in west, but it IS one of the best exclusives for PS3, and was made by japan studios.
Don't know how writers and commenters can forget that game.
PS3 need more originals RPGs like that.

I'd rather have quirky, original games like Echochrome, The Last Guy or Trash Panic over some generic 1st/3rd person shooter any day. Does it really matter if they're blockbusters or not? Most of the big SCEE and SCEA games mentioned might be impressive from a technological stand point, but aren't especially innovative in terms of gameplay (with 1 or 2 exceptions).

It's an apples and oranges comparison. Their objective wasn't making bad ass AAA high fidelity games. Their objective was making PSP games as the article clearly states. All things considered the stuff they've put out is really good stuff (in my opinion anyway)
Well the head of the studio stated they are shifting the focus from PSP & PSN to making those high budget games.
White Knight Chronicles 1 & 2
Gran Turismo 5
Last Guardian
Are those AAA enough?
You can't fault them for not making things they didn't have the chance to make. But, I kind of prefer most of the PSN games to the disc based PS3 games. I get more playtime and enjoyment out of stuff like Stardust HD & Burn Zombie Burn than a lot of the $60 games released now-a-days (Arkham Asylum & Red Faction for example) ... They kind of bring me back to the 8 & 16 bit era of gaming where it was based around simple yet solid gameplay mechanics. I'll take the last guy over Arkham Asylum everyday of the week.

Japanese PS3 gamers have the same thing in mind.
And I too think SCEJ aren't doing a good job.
I know there GT5 and Trico is coming, but compared to SCEE and SCEA,
SCEJ is lacking.
@johnnynumber5
White Knight Chronicles isn't developed by SCEJ.
If I remember right, its developed by Level 5.
The developer who developed Dragon Quest IX.

As far as I can tell pretty much all of Japanese current-gen development is pretty lackluster compared to the bad-assery that has come out of the West. I used to enjoy Japanese games with a passion, but with so little actual innovation happening that works (failed experiments only being noteworthy because it was an attempt at somethingNEW , albeit completely effed up) outside of the handheld market, almost everything I buy and love has ended up being developed elsewhere with very few exceptions.

I would love to see a huge part of the PSP library playable on the PS3. All those games could become outstanding PSN titles and the cost for porting them over is less than producing the game itself. I am sure I am not the only PS player who doesn't play on portable platforms but uses the consoles a lot. And with so many original titles on the PSP it would make for some extra business (and promotion) for those games. After all those who play PSP on the go will still keep playing PSP on the go.

I thought White Knight Chronicles was a Level5 game, second party, like Folklore and Genji were Game Republic (which is going multiplatform).
And Ape Escape PS3 was confirmed at TGS09 during the motion control line up unveil, i guess.

I have to say: Locoroco Cocoreccho, Echochrome, The Last Guy, etc.. -> some of my favorite PS3 games!
Then again, the PS3 has tons of great games - I actually want more great PSP games like Patapon/Locoroco/Echochrome! I still enjoy the Halloween and Christmas Locoroco demos - they have a permanent place on my PSP!
Too bad Eye of Judgment died though - it was a fun combination of real and virtual game play. I'd like to see more console-enhanced tabletop games.
