Doom Classic released for iPhone and iPod Touch

The title is going for $6.99 [app store link] and includes four episodes: "Knee-deep in the Dead," "Shores of Hell," "Inferno" and "Thy Flesh Consumed." It offers multiple control configurations, at least one of which we've gotten fairly proficient with after an embarrassingly long and death-filled adjustment period. We haven't tried out the four-player local Wifi deathmatch yet, but as for internet play? Based on John Carmack's comments, we'd expect to find that washed up on the shores of Hell.

Not enough duct tape.

Doom: Resurrection was a Wii title. But they decided it would sell more on the iPhone.
I think they were right.
Cheesus Crust @ Nov 3rd 2009 12:04AM
OK, so It can play Doom, but can it play Crysis?
Reader @ Nov 3rd 2009 12:28AM
A few more years, and I might smirk.

Old news, Joystiq! I bought this on Saturday!
And I must say, I wish they had gone with Wolfenstein's iPhone control scheme. I don't particularly care for the Doom alterations. It's not terrible, just different.
Levi @ Nov 3rd 2009 12:11AM
that's the thing tho. Wolf is a much simpler game, so a simpler control scheme works. I knew once they made the jump to more than two axes of gameplay, people would prbably praise the controls less. It's why I haven't bought Duke 3D. I gotta go check out reviews on that.
Darth Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 3rd 2009 12:12AM
And this makes four copies of Doom, Joystiq. One for the PC, one for the iPhone, one for the 32X, and my "Ultimate Doom" port that came with Doom 3 LE.
CJH @ Nov 3rd 2009 8:41AM
They have the old Wolf control scheme if you prefer. Turn "center sticks" off in the settings.
Nytemare457 @ Nov 3rd 2009 12:10AM
*gets*
GET SOME!
Oh wait...wrong game :(
Aussa @ Nov 3rd 2009 12:49AM
They already have this for FREE on Android. And the physical keyboard and trackball on the G1 make it much easier to control. http://code.google.com/p/doom-for-android/
NaeemTHM @ Nov 3rd 2009 1:39AM
I tried it on the G1 and found it nearly unplayable. The controls are cramped as all hell, it's laggy, the music just drops at points, and I could never get the shooting right. I tried using the camera button but I got a damn hand cramp.
It's fairly better on the iPhone, clearly Carmack put some elbow grease into this port. I'm certainly having a good time with the game and made it through the first Episode, but I'm still having some trouble adjusting to the controls.
Is it me or did the control scheme feel soooo much better on the Wolf port?
Either way, it's Doom so it's awesome. GET IT.

Why have you been downvoted? You're completely right...
Aussa @ Nov 4th 2009 12:49AM
Its all the Iphone fan boys that did it... Those faggots
midnightprince7 @ Nov 3rd 2009 12:55AM
And now we need quake
GoonieGooGoo @ Nov 3rd 2009 2:02AM
yawn
Aussa @ Nov 3rd 2009 3:31AM
Why do you even take the time to post such a meaningless comment?
Joe @ Nov 4th 2009 12:24AM
@aussa
Well it did get a reaction from you...
ecco6t9 @ Nov 3rd 2009 2:20AM
I think I got one more Doom run in me.
bjoern kah @ Nov 3rd 2009 4:16AM
It's not available in Germany!
eldee @ Nov 3rd 2009 4:39AM
yeah! been waiting for this one for months.. the wolf classic port was friggin sweet.
Tha0racle @ Nov 3rd 2009 5:47AM
Wolf classic is excellent, the map is done well and u can resize it. You don't have to find the key to get to the next level if you choose not to. Also they just added Spear of Destiny as DLC for free if you already own Wolf. I will pick up Doom on Thursday.
M.Garvey @ Nov 3rd 2009 9:37AM
Hmmm...I wonder how I'm gonna put the game into GOD mode without a keyboard...
NaeemTHM @ Nov 3rd 2009 10:00AM
You tap with 4 fingers to bring up the keyboard.
whylekat @ Nov 3rd 2009 9:44AM
That price is wayy to high for a game from the 90's.
NaeemTHM @ Nov 3rd 2009 10:04AM
Oh come on I think it's a fair price considering we're getting 4 episodes, and similar 90's games go for 8-10 dollars on Wii's Virtual Console...and they're not as good!
On top of that Doom timeless and such a fantastic game. That said, you might not like spending 6 bucks on a game with questionable controls. I mean I dig them, but I'm not sure if you will. BUT on the off chance you were down with Wolf for the iPhone, pony up the money and show Carmack that we will pay for his games!!
Otherwise he may stop releasing quality titles T__T
I WANT QUAKE DAMN IT!
whylekat @ Nov 3rd 2009 11:29AM
I totally agree and you're right, in the large picture it's not a lot of money for a quality title. I think we're (I'm) so used to seeing iPhone games for $2 or less that now I'm like "over $2.99?? *ragee*!"
But quake seems too hectic for an iPhone title.
Levi @ Nov 3rd 2009 3:25PM
The app store really devalues decent games ecause of their free pricing model and how so much crap is available for $1. $6 really isn't bad for 4 episodes of Doom, but at the same time, it's too much for a lot of us who have played it so many timea it's only worth a couple bucks to have it on the go. I mean.. I played Doom on several computers, in several engines, on SNES, N64, GBA... That might be it.. But that's still a lot for one game. Considering you can get OpenGL Doom for free, $6 is pushing it.
Asmerom (PSN: neon6plz) @ Nov 3rd 2009 10:16AM
So how powerful is the iPhone?
Shagittarius @ Nov 3rd 2009 12:58PM
it's over 9000!!!!!!!!!!!
Grimcicle @ Nov 3rd 2009 10:34AM
Doom on the PSN, please.
nikhil @ Nov 3rd 2009 11:02AM
They have the classic Doom on the Google phone too!
ChuckBartowski @ Nov 3rd 2009 12:16PM
i guess its good if you have a newer iphone/ipod touch, but id rather just hack it and play all my own wads...
