I just bought a slim, I'm sick of the "phat" PS3s. 20GBs keep crapping out on me.

I got my first 20GB at launch. That got the YLOD. OK. I sent that in for $150, then my replacement's blu-ray drive dies 4 months later.

I dont understand? is that supposed to be 9 BILLION dollars of debt for the xbox and the zune? Because there's just no way that's possible. for one thing, didnt microsoft confirm last april that it was the first time the xbox had been profitable? and second, come on 9 BILLION?! For two products? You're just making that shit up right?

I may buy a PS3 again but am still scared of the build quality issues, hope they are fixed in the slim PS3, better fucking be.

I'd love to get a 60gb PS3 again but those are fucking ticking time-bombs, just like the launch 360s, they WILL fail, its just a question of when.

Don't worry, your being a bit to pessimistic about it. :P I don't know if your being sarcastic but, I can reassure you that PS3 failure rates are less than 1% (http://digg.com/playstation/Store_managers_detail_PS3_failure_rate_at_less_than_1). Though, it could seem like a lot because 1% out of approx. 25 million PS3s sold is 250,000 (if I did my math right), but not enough to get too worked up about. The only reason why many people fear RROD (cmon guys its 2009, can't be that bad) and PS3's hardware quality now is because every time an article comes out and notes issues like that, everyone that has the problem flocks together making it seem big issue.

Due you bought an unwarranted, used PS3 on the second hand market ... not even at retail. How can you say with any certainty there already wasn't issues with it before you bought it?

On top of that you could of bought a warranty through Sony if it was within the manufacturers 1 year warranty and if not you could buy one through Square Trade. It would have cost you $40-$50 for 2-3 years of warranty.

Besides, the failures rates are insanely low on these things. Does it happen? Obviously sometimes but it's built like a tank ... no offense to the 360 but it's an inept comparison to say the failure rates are anywhere near similar.

I actually got mine about a month before the price cut...
I'd feel like an idiot for not waiting for the slim, but running Linux was actually the major selling point for me.

"For a moment, let's ignore the billions Sony has lost on the PS3 so far"

Sure why not we've been ignoring the billions that M$ has lost on the xbox line, hell you guys haven't even tried to count it up, but to be fair it's because they spend so much money it'd be like counting the drops in the ocean.

I sure also saying that the PS3 sells well has to be murdering Gamestop employee's considering how much they shat on the PS3 the first 2 years. I bought my PS3, 3 years ago as of this upcoming Black Friday, and I agree It's paid for itself easily. (as opposed to having to still spend 50 bucks a year just to play online...)

@ryancw

Click the link to your name that brings you into your profile. Then, you have to input your password (they give you one by default on your first comment: check your e-mail afterwards you can change it if you haven't already), you can also change your password from here, set your account to private, change your screen name or add a new avatar. The avatar system is kind of broken most of the time. I'd suggest getting the picture you want and if it doesn't upload (it always says it's successful and takes 5 minutes but that doesn't mean it changed) resize the picture to something like 80x80 pixels.

At ryamcw, you'll have to sign in then go to account management, then go to edit account information & you should see the option for changing your avatar. If you want to change your online name you'll have to create a new account (near the option for turning off your system). Back on topic. I got my 60gb in 2008, it was an early xmas present to myself.

I got mine just after the price drop, but I nearly bought the Uncharted bundle just weeks before the slim was announced.

I saved a good $200.

refurb (roxors!) 40gb off of sonystyle for $220, right after the price drop. With the $80 I saved over the slim, I get linux, a slightly faster blu-ray drive, and shiny.

I'd suggest buying the 3 year warranty off the Sony Style site as well. The only good uses I've found for Linux is playing old game console ROMs (NES etc) and installing VLC media player to play any type of movie file (something the PS3 itself is limited by due to firmware) ... yup

Yea I've been meaning to get a warranty ever since those drive errors started popping up.

As for the linux, I haven't used it yet but I plan on using it to back up my blu-ray collection. I'm just waiting until I upgrade my HDD first. Even if I didn't end up using it I didn't like the idea of paying more for a PS3 with less features.

If you bought it at launch, doesn't that mean you've just had to endure a longer wait for decent software implementation? I bought it after the first price drop and still felt cheated.

They've had good software since it's inception. If anything you cheated yourself for not being an informed consumer. Thats like expecting a cat and buying a dog and saying you feel cheated buy the pet store.

OK, Ill explain it for those too stupid to work out that are being played by selective reporting and manipulating accounting.

When Microsoft and Joystiq report than Microsoft made money, it means they made money IN THAT QUARTER. Microsoft cleverly reserved money for upcoming expenses like 360 development (3.2bn), and RROD (1.2bn, but nearly double that now).

What this means, is they had horendously bad quarters in the ones they reserved that money, but then everything looked great in the following quarters because all the expenses were coming out he reserve pot.

The fact remains (regardless of Joystiqs selective reporting) Microsoft have lost nearly $9bn to date on the Xbox/Zune division (I mention Zune, as it's in the same financial group as Xbox). They lost £3.6bn alone on the original Xbox venture, they wasted another £3bn on 360 development and they have lost $2.2bn on RROD.

What people forget, Sony's $5bn loss includes Blu-Ray and Cell development, both of which will pay dividends long after the 10yr PS3 lifecycle. PS3 $5bn include alot of investment, Microsofts are pure loss, what can they take away from Xbox and use in the next system? The CPU? nope, the DVD drive?
