The Left 4 Dead modding community is really kicking decomposing zombie butt lately. We've seen Raccoon City, some of our favorite Super Mario 64 spots, and even Shaun of the Dead'sWinchester pub all realized in the game's zombie apocalypse framework. Now we bring you another mod that pays homage to a zombie film: 'Dead Before Dawn,' a mod based on the 2004 remake of George A. Romero's classic, Dawn of the Dead.
The new mod opened to public beta this Halloween and features a variety of locales stripped from the movie, along with its own snazzy campaign poster. The folks behind the mod even went so far as to create their own title sequence (though their version features far less Johnny Cash than the movie's). You can shamble on past the break to check it out.
I'm gonna get punched in the virtual face for saying this, but. Really, now that you look at the whole picture, Left 4 Dead belongs on the PlayStation 3. When Unreal Tournament 3 was released, it was also about mods. The PC world and the PS3 world hand-in-hand. Well, Left 4 Dead is doing the same thing, but no love for anyone with a 360 to be able to use the mods for their 360 games, just as Microsoft cut off the mods for Unreal Tournament 3 on 360. Sony didn't care, Sony welcomed the mods. But they're all going to waste. The PC gaming world is getting insanely small compared to the console gaming market. The only game really to appeal to the masses, is World of Warcraft. Left 4 Dead belongs on the PS3. Valve needs to get their act together and NOT PORT IT! But rebuild it for the PS3. I think they'd be pleasently surprised at the outcome of such a decision.
UT3 was never a timed exclusive to the PS3. It was first released on the PC back on November 17, 2007 and then on the PS3 a month later in December. Saying it was a timed exclusive means that there was a period of time where the only way to play the game was on the PS3 which is just incorrect.
Sorry but people that use the word 'exclusive' improperly annoy me. If a game is available on more than one platform then, by definition, it isn't exclusive. You can try and spin it all you want by saying it is console exclusive or whatever other phrase you want but it doesn't make it true. Even that phrase (console exclusive) is incorrectly used since it would refer to a game being exclusive to consoles, not exclusive to a single console.
Funny thing NeoMahi is that to enable mods for the PS3 version of UT3, you'd need to transfer those mods from the PC version of the game to the PS3 version, the "dying" platform as you claim. The PS3 version can't make its own mods.
Don't get me wrong, it's nice that the PS3 allows mods, and even nicer that UT3 had proper keyboard and mouse support on the PS3, but L4D doesn't belong on the PS3.
Want some reasons?
First of all, Valve is a PC developer first. They're a very small company and they don't have the experience to program a game for the PS3 and properly use the cell. If they tried to port the game themselves it would probably end up worse than the PS3 version of the orange box, and because it takes away from their small pool of resources, hurt the quality of both the xbox and pc versions of the game. It's best for valve to stick to the platform that they've mastered so that they can provide us with as good of a game as possible. To me, the quality and fun factor of the game are much, much more important than something as silly as what platform it's for.
Secondly, Multiplayer-centric shooters like this tend to not sell as well on the PS3 as they do on the 360. Valve would have to put more resources into making the PS3 version, but because the audience is different and less likely to buy the game in droves, they would probably get less of a return for it. It's just not a good business choice.
When valve said they are considering bringing mods to L4D2 to the 360. I hope this is one of them. Change the names for copy right reasons and please bring this. As an unfortunate owner of L4D 360 I can't mod. And no I will not spend $ and get a pc.
Well, if Valve could find a way to get it to the Marketplace for free, they may not have to worry about Copyrights as they are not attempting to make a profit on it similar to how the modding community is releasing it. But I could be wrong.
What I don't get is why some games can offer free DLC while for others they charge.
My point being that games like Halo 3 can have Cold Storage and the Heroic Map Pack for free, but Valve can't make the DLC for Left 4 Dead free? (Referring to Crash Course).
Also, as long as the mods are offered for free as new DLC maps, and the original owners sign a contract Valve shouldn't have any legal problems. They could probably have them sign stating they certify that the one signing is the rightful owner of such content, and they are signing away the rights for it to Valve, and that any and all conflicts arising from one party deceiving the other shall be the responsibility of the person signing. No profits, etc. etc.
@sonicspike41: Thats actually a good question. Maybe it's because Microsoft publishes Halo, but not L4D. Achievements might also have something to do with it (like if it has new acheivements it has to be paid so that MS can profit from it. Of course they themselves would be exempt from such a rule). Maybe it's to do with filesize? Who knows? MS seem to have some very strange, convoluted and restrictive terms for Xbox Live and their system in general (yet they will bend/break them for some devs, kinda like how CoD:MW and Halo 3 were allowed to be sub 720p). Honestly, it's one of the reasons I prefer PS3 (the openness in general I meen...although I'm mainly a PC gamer, which follows the pattern I suppose).
P.S. Sorry if this seems incoherant, I'm finding it strangely hard to concentrate on anything today...need more coffee I think.
This map isn't that great and it was first unveiled in 2005. They've had 4 years to work on it and it's still in beta and has a bunch of errors and flaws. At least it's free... but I'm kind of annoyed that the creator scammed donations out of the community for a new computer.
Agreed. At first I was like "oh this is so cool"... until the bugs started rearing their ugly heads. Was pretty frustrating trying to get through the whole campaign. And is the finale actually finished? I got a debug error during the loading screen.
I had NO idea about the Left4Winchester until now. DO WANT. Screw Left 4 Dead 2, the best thing about a game like left for dead is the mods, not the sequel.
And although L4D2 will have mods, i have a mancrush on Bill... so if i'm killing modded zombies, i better have my badass veteran senior help me do it.
I just installed it and I can't get through the first area because the world is exploding with no rhyme, reason, or context. I haven't seen anything so far that even remotely resembles the movie though, and I watched that last night.
@NeoMahi don't preach to the XBots. What you stated was the truth but i've already excepted that Valve just will not invest a few funds from their gravy train to develop for PS3.
@Ulquiorra Cifer: UT3 was a huge failure anyway not just because it was on the PS3 platform. PC sales tanked as well.
@CaramelZappa: the Source engine is old as hell and you should realize that all they'd have to do is port the engine over to have all these games available. Valve is just being lazy and they are satisfied selling games on the PC and the XBOX360 so I can't fault them for that.
