I loved the Baldur's Gate games, and most super-complicated western style RPGS. I never played KotOR, so I don't have that as a reference point. Jade Empire was too action oriented (which made sense for the type of story they were telling) for me, though I did finish it, I just never took advantage of half the combos, special abilities etc. the game offered. With Mass Effect it was not so much the combat interface that bothered me so much as the conversation interface - for some reason it just seemed to really drag whenever I was talking to people, which is notrmally my favorite part of an RPG. So after a while I just lost interest...

I will probably end up getting Dragon Age scince I don't think anybody will be a able to tell me whether or not I will like the interface - I'll just have to try it out.

I imagine the UI will be a lot like Baldurs Gate 2 was, except more streamlined and refined.

I won't know for just over an hour of course, as my steam copy doesn't unlock until 2pm EST.

Seeing as how you enjoyed Baldurs Gate you may as well plop down the money for Dragon Age, from what I have read it's the closest thing we're going to get to Baldurs Gate 3, and from what I have read if you can get run the PC version, it's superior to the console versions.

"This is considered to be a "hardcore" game as far as RPG's go"

Who ever said this? Dragon Age is far from a "hardcore" rpg. And if you didn't like Mass Effect's UI, don't bother getting this game

It sounds really cool but MAN I just don't have time. It took me like 5 weeks to play Mario & Luigi 3, and it sounds like Dragon Age is at least twice as long, and I'd probably have much fewer opportunities to play because it's not on a DS. I can't devote 3 months to one game at the moment. I wish I could.

I am just curious with the PC version if I decide to hook it up to my HDTV, could I use the 360 controller and the game switches to the "console" interface from the more detailed PC interface?

I'm guessing no and you'd call me crazy as to why I'd want to play with the "inferior" console interface. Sometimes you want to play on the computer desk and sometimes on a TV so I was wondering. I know people will just tell me to buy a console then but flexibility is always nice.

Playing Crysis with the 360 controller is just about impossible BTW.

This review is basically useless. I've only just recently gotten interested in Dragon Age so I haven't been following the game at all; Randy's review tells me nothing of any substance about the game world or the game mechanics beyond a few shallow impressions. What about the game hooked you? Why was it so engaging? I'm not asking for an IGN style 200 page review, but some more meat would be appreciated.

I feel like I know almost as little about what Dragon Age is about as I did before reading Randy's review.

read the prequel book. pre-ordered the game long ago, the limited edition one. cuz ya know what? i'm tired of always hearing about shooters that i cant stand playing. america is waaaay to interested in current age warfare, IMO. so for me, no matter what, this game is a win-win. and after reading the book, i'm pretty confident the game's story will be pretty damned good too.

cant wait til 4:30 when i get outta work and can go pick it up :D

A solid review there Randy but I get a little offended when PC fans claim the PC interface is better, PC game interfaces was one reason I switched to consoles for my gaming platform of choice.

"A little offended" please, stop being such a whiny little girl. It's like saying Fighters don't work well on PC without a gamepad...no duh. That's common sense.

Same goes for this style of gameplay on the PC, it doesn't translate too well onto consoles. I'm sorry he hurt your feelings by stating simple truth.

Really? It's the combat system relying on a turn-based component that makes an rpg an rpg, not the "role-playing" element?

I certainly understand the draw of the turn-based system of many a JRPG, but I don't see how the combat system is the biggest part of an rpg. Personally, I play an rpg for the story. It was true for all the FF's, it was true for Oblivion, Fallout, ME, Xenogears/Xenosaga, etc. Some had terrible combat systems, some were fantastic. But it was the roleplaying aspect that kept me playing.

"The story is superbly told, with interesting NPCs and dialog that's well-written, funny at just the right moments and solidly delivered by a cast of many voice-over actors (none of Oblivion or Fallout 3's small cast of pitch-shifted VO artists here!)."

Something about this review has me feeling that the reviewer is far too much of a fanboy and too little of a critic. If the voice acting is anything like it was in the pre-release trailers or gameplay demonstrations/developer walkthroughs, it isn't much better than what Oblivion had (with exception to that I imagine this has 'unique' dialogue, and not simply, as pointed out, pitch-variation for the same lines of dialogue).

So again - while I have no OTHER things to nitpick about the game, not having played it yet and having to go on only pre-release footage - something doesn't feel right about the voice acting being praised the way it is by this reviewer, when so many 'other people' were making comments about how it's ear-gratingly poor.

BioWare delivers yet again. Not that I expected them not too, but this hasn't been hyped up as much as say, Mass Effect was. (Though, of course being the Bias BioWare fan I am, thought that totally delivered too.)

I haven't picked it up yet, but will be doing so this week. Sadly, for the 360 as my PC can't run this well enough but that's ok. I'll get to experience it nonetheless!

Anyone know if BioWare have included keyboard and mouse support in the PS3 version of Dragon Age: Orgins? If not, they SHOULD have! The platform clearly supports USB and Bluetooth mice and keyboards, and it works out well. Played Unreal Tournament with that setup and I've got nothing to complain about.

If there's no support on the PS3 version for keyboard/mouse I hope that BioWare can provide this functionality with a patch in the future. Of course we'll have to have both console and PC versions of the interface in the game, I'm aware of that.

OK: super-short review

The stuttering on the video is slightly annoying.

The gameplay framerate is pitiful; it reminds me of trying to play Neverwinter Nights on my underpowered mac laptop back in the day.

The art is sometimes beautiful, but sometimes glaringly ugly-looking (at least my character looks attractive).

not a very polished product at $60, but fun nonetheless. I've never played any of bioware's games (I stopped NW after 2 or so hours), but I'm enjoying the story so far, no matter how rough along the edges it is. Definitely a buy at $40 (I swapped out Ratchet and Clank for DA using the 2 for 1 deal from last week).

I really didn't follow the development of this game and really didn't care one way or the other until they started showing the commercials.... Then I found out the combat system is like KOTOR's pause and play which I hate. Does anyone think the pause and play adds anything to the game??? Real Time is the way to go IMO.

What the hell, man. Oblivion was atrocious compared to Morrowind and Daggerfall, and KoTOR was nothing compared to Baldur's Gate 2. I can see why these reviews pander to younger audiences, but us old folk would want to know how this game stacks up compared to the classic CRPGs of yore with their infinite menus and dice measurements, not you crazy kids and your Final Fantasies and such.

It's like that one time when people were talking about Kaim from Lost Odyssey and I'm like "NONO PLANESCAPE TORMENT DID IT FIRST" and people were like "who's this guy".

Turned out the US and UK release is different by about 3 days. I'll go tomorrow and buy it =D

Oh and if anyone has this would they say this is as good as Oblivion? I've spent 500+ hours onto it and was curious if i could do the same with this?

Thanks for the review btw.

Is the writing in this article supposed to be ironic (see Jeff Green's cudgel of xanthor)? Does it just suck?

"is a testament to the company's mastery of the art of building the worlds, characters and stories that constitute a "classic" -- and that's exactly what this excellent experience is."

This game is terrible. The game looks worse than Oblivion, which came out almost four years ago. The voice acting is atrocious, the script is an absolute joke. The game design is terrible, with certain parts of the game dirt easy and other parts absolutely mind numbingly annoying.

If you're the OCD kind of player who plays these types of games to death - you know, who likes to craft every item possible, spend hours decorating your rooms with potions, and replaying to view every possible line of dialogue, then this game might be great for you in that respect.

If you're a normal person who just wants an enjoyable, fun, well crafted epic - steer clear. This game is very much a hardcore d&d style crawler and its humility will open appeal to a select few.

4/10.

I find the PC version to be buggy with lackluster graphics, it's slow paced, but I enjoy the story. I give it a 3 out of 5 at best. It's a mediocre RPG that doesn't do anything new at all.

Agree completely. Three days was all I could stand. Its too hard to control your party and the default difficulty is a little too rough. The story and acting are definitely the stars of the show, as cliche as they may be. On top of that, the whole "pause-based" gaming scheme is really turning me off. Give me turn-based or real time...anything else is rubbish.

BIOWARE: SELL YOUR SOUL TO GET THE D&D RIGHTS AGAIN. ITS YOUR ONLY HOPE.
