We've got a double dose of Star Trek Online video goodness for you today, as Cryptic has seen fit to not only release part two of the "Future Past" series, but also a new gameplay trailer. The trailer -- handily embedded above -- is comprised mostly of pitched space battles and ground encounters. It's also packed with more phaser and disruptor beams than you can shake a tribble at. One more thing: Borg cube.
After the break, see part two of "The Future Past," which details the outcome of the Klingon / Nausicaan / Gorn war. In short, the Klingons are pretty much bad guys again by 2409, the year in which Star Trek Online begins.
Aaaand I just lost interest. To quote the simpsons:
Again with the klingons.
DS9 makes it pretty clear the klingons would be in no shape to wage a war, let alone several. So why not use this time to bring in some new adversaries? Getting the gorn/orions/nuassicans together as a kind of anti federation is a good idea but not if it just means fighting klingons for the umpteenth time.
Who cares? I don't really like Star Trek except the new movie but I'm looking forward to this game. It can throw in Klingons and Borgs and whatever the hell else alien buttmonsters exist in the Trekverse.
Besides, MMOs always sacrifice accuracy to the source material. Always. I mean holy shit look at World of Warcraft. Their lore has been raped so many times it's completely incomprehensible now.
Eh WoW didn’t have much lore to begin with. Warcraft I was basically a warhammer knockoff where evil orcs were attacking good humans. People call it messing with the lore but if you ask me, they’re just adding to what was a pretty bare-bones and cliché storyline to begin with.
As for Star Trek, I’m a little unsettled by this whole “warcraft in space” approach. This is a franchise that became a success because of its positive outlook and the ability of its characters to solve problems through peaceful and intelligent means. I just don’t see this game capturing the brilliance of the hugo award-winning "The Inner Light" or the “aha!” moments the audience experience when Picard discovers an entire alien race communicates though metaphor. All the physical conflicts and phasers are merely a backdrop for a story that is primarily concerned with deeper subjects. I’m not sure if an mmo can capture this, at least not in the genre’s current state.

Because it's 40 years after DS9 and they explain what's going on in incredible depth on startrekonline.com?
Check out the path to 2409, it's really good.

I aint paying monthly for this if the graphics are that bad. They might as well add a "pop" sound effect for every ship that blows up...

This looks like Eve online + Star Wars Galaxies combined to make one giant bland game.
