Square Enix files U.S. trademark for Fantasy Earth Zero
You could be forgiven for never hearing about Fantasy Earth Zero -- in addition to having a cookie cutter RPG moniker (following the role-playing trope/noun/number formula), it's only available in Japan, though China and Taiwan are currently in a prolonged beta testing period. However, if a recent Square Enix trademark filing is any indication, the free-to-play, microtransaction-supported MMO will be heading stateside at some point in the future.
The trademark filing was expectedly scant on details about the game, so we suggest watching the three-year-old debut trailer we've posted after the jump. It, too, doesn't provide many hard-and-fast facts about the MMO but after watching it, we feel like we can safely vouch that, yes, the game does include Fantasy. Possibly in an Earth-like setting.

Fantasy games with the word "Fantasy" in them..
That's like Massive Action Games with the words "Massive Action Game" in them.

Too bad this is a hyper-realistic FPS game.
sam @ Nov 3rd 2009 4:57PM
@Steve: Hyper-realistic FPS? Hmm, I can see that in general, but I dunno if it's possible in real life to pack in the sheer quantity of starch that would make a pink skirt hold its shape like that...

That blurry ground texture against those crisp character models is really bothering me...
den-69 @ Nov 3rd 2009 5:45PM
Yeah looks like they have swiped the textures off the stairs on RE1 lol

Aside from the microtransaction thing, this sounds kind of cool. I hope it has a more sensible leveling/class system than FFXI.
Josh @ Nov 4th 2009 12:32AM
What was wrong with the FFXI system?
KFelon @ Nov 3rd 2009 6:42PM

Player: I chaaaaaarge!!!!
GM: OK, throw the dice
Player: But, but, i'm charging, charge doesnt require a dice throw
GM: I'm the gm and if I want to you have to throw dices to charge
Player: Ok, ok, here goes
*player throws a d20*
*player rolled a 1*
Player: WTF!!!!!???????
GM: Throw it again and lets see what happen
Player: fak..... ok
*player throws the dice again*
*player rolls a natural 20*
GM: Ok, this is what happens. You charge but in the way, you trip with a little tiny rock. The "OMFG thats no sword, thats a giant machete" like stabbing device goes flying from your hands and end up piercing the whole upperbody of the most powerfull, meanest, gruesomest enemy there will ever be in the history of D&D that no lich dragon wouled ever try to mess with and ends up dying. you win the game
Player: huuuuuuhhhh?...... yay?????

I was playing this game way back on japanese server ( before the stupid IP ban).
Best PVP game so far i played. solid strategy playing
less level and equip dependant ( not much dmg upgrade per lv change)
non homing targeting system ,
the problem maybe just weak country will just keep get capped by big clan
and graphic quality ( quite low for this day)
Hope to see this game up soon
