DICE receives fan letter in thanks of Bad Company 2 dedicated servers
Edward
of New Jersey was so happy with DICE's decision to support dedicated servers for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 that he sent the company a $60 check. Although it's pretty hard to look up the
family of New Jersey to ask Eddie why he sent the money, we'll guess it had something to do with Infinity Ward's decision to not allow dedicated PC servers for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
As for what DICE plans to spend the money on, Battlefield Producer Gordon Van Dyke gave no indications. Some Battlefield 1943 maps would be nice. The intern could probably get it done for $60, right?

Eh, a little over the top on his part but I do share his sentiment (dedicated servers are where the fun is at on PC shooters). I just don't have $60 to give away like that. Why didn't he go buy another game? Does he not realize there's more games in the world than Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare 2?
Stteevvveee @ Nov 4th 2009 10:21AM
He was probably super hyped for MW2 and when he heard that dedicated servers were a no go, he probably just got a massive boner killer.
Obie @ Nov 4th 2009 10:29AM
He probably used that money for penmanship classes. :p
I keed, I keed! My doctor also has that chicken-scratch writing style.
PR0F3TA (PSN - PROPHETA) @ Nov 4th 2009 6:49PM
no, it kinda shows how dedicated PC gamers are. I miss gaming on a PC but it got way too expensive and i got way too engaged
R (Planeteers | Power of Penile Pulse) @ Nov 4th 2009 10:22AM
Its too bad that even with IW's decision to attempt a new trend of fucking up PC FPS's, that MW2 is still the most pre ordered game ever. With this decision seemingly not noticably impacting sales, it makes me wonder if this might become a trend with high profile PC FPS games.
Not that it matters much to me, as the only FPS I play on my PC is Unreal 3, and as that has a dead community, is very rare nowadays. Still, its a bit disheartening.
Obie @ Nov 4th 2009 10:25AM
While I feel for PC gamers, but it is a sad fact that they are not the standard game companies cater to. Console gaming is taking over, with all the good...and bad...stuff that brings along.
RKN @ Nov 4th 2009 11:04AM
Hey monkey, can you hand me that memo? I'd just to take a look at it before I grab my hammer, smash my gaming PC to bits and buy back the Xbox 360 I sold to my brother who is a PC gamer also who sold it to my dad for $30 who uses it to watch DVDs.
Dracard @ Nov 4th 2009 11:12AM
Someone's mad because his PC can't handle modern games.
But then again saying the PS3 is fail and that Live is the only way to go is pretty stupid. Makes you look like a bag of crap (and not in the Woot way)... or just a plain ol' douche.
Dracard @ Nov 4th 2009 11:14AM
Disregard, he got banned. :)
RKN @ Nov 4th 2009 11:27AM
Dracard, that was Sprinkles, the most infamous troll to hit Joystiq. Been here since early 08, has been banned over 100 times and keeps on coming back. Hates Sony with a passion, licks Microsoft's balls, likes Nintendo just to spite Sony, etc.
JXCgunrunna @ Nov 4th 2009 11:42AM
The Falconer is not Sprinkles. He's a iPhone fanboy and we all know sprinkles would be all over Windows mobile phones.
RKN @ Nov 4th 2009 12:16PM
Seriously, that was Sprinkles, I could smell its posting style from a mile away.
Your right I forgot, it only really likes the 360 as a MS product, its a fanboy of the Ipod and IPhone
Uncontrol @ Nov 4th 2009 10:22AM
They better send this guy something cool. That's awesome.
Stteevvveee @ Nov 4th 2009 10:23AM
Yeah if anything, it makes them look good
Young_Nastyman @ Nov 4th 2009 11:34AM
It would be uber awesome of them if they sent him a copy of the game early, not too much maybe like a week or two
Doug @ Nov 4th 2009 1:15PM
would love to see more positive stories like this...
Obie @ Nov 4th 2009 10:23AM
Dice dude: " Bjorn! We just got $60 in the mail from a fan!"
Dice dude 2: "Sweet Sven! Now we can get that copy of Modern Warfare 2!"

Eglorian @ Nov 4th 2009 10:26AM
If I were a developer/designer, whatever, getting this sort of letter is a bonus, and I would definitely send the guy some treats (T-shirt, some merchandising, etc)
Jeffrey Abell @ Nov 4th 2009 10:26AM
I say rock on Eddie. Way to put your money where your mouth is. Most people go on the internet to write petitions, or better yet go to their favorite website and bitch about it.
Of course, the right thing for DICE to do would be to send him something sweet for the good publicity. Hopefully they'll come through.
Hydrophobicfish (PSN: HydrophobicFish) @ Nov 4th 2009 10:26AM
I think it was something like, webs.com... or maybe it was cake.com, he did say something about cake.
Mmmmm, cake.
Let's all go to cake.com and give them our business instead... because hey, we all like cake... dot com.
Phillip @ Nov 4th 2009 10:30AM
If I were DICE, I'd of made up a story like this too. ;-)

Listen everyone knows that as a gamer this part is a necessary evil -you need dedicated servers so the gaming experience can Live up to the expectations of the fans...
And for that I am proud to support EA in giving gamers what they want, yes it cost money to do this, but it's well worth it as it helps make the gaming experience one that gamers will come back too, time and time again.
The fact that greedy as hell Activision could not see this just shows the disconnect a lot of these CEO's have about their own consumer market... (Instead of saying, "hey we are all facing hard times right now, let's support our gamers and help them through the tough times".. They instead decide to give the gamer the shaft...
Never would I have thought that EA would be the better company and I must say it does make me want to support them even harder... Battlefield -Bad Company 2 Day one buy for me...on 360 and PS3... getting both. (too many friends on both systems)
I will also get the PC version once I finish building My Super PC in late April early May
Modern Warfare 2, probably pick it up used off of ebay or Gamestop -for PS3... Funk You Activision -I refuse to give Activision any sales...
Draco @ Nov 4th 2009 1:08PM
Why did you capitalize live? you were trying to say liv right not microsfts Lie-ve? you don't need to cap it :)
just messin' with you.
Orchard Pear @ Nov 4th 2009 10:41AM
Good on him.
Like an above commenter stated, it's nice to see someone actually back up their words and take a stand, instead of just taking the usual PC Gamer route and crying, pissing, moaning, and baw'ing..
..when they'll just end up buying the game anyway.
Obie @ Nov 4th 2009 10:42AM
Hold the phone! It seems that is a personal check, I don't think personal checks can be cashed outside the country of origin unless they are a certified cashiers check.
Ruh-oh!
incubeezer @ Nov 4th 2009 12:08PM
Yeah I just figured they wouldn't cash it, too.

The funny thing is a month ago no PC gamer gave a flying leap about Bad Company 2... although back in the day Battlefield 2 was THE game, not Call of Duty 2.
I still predict there will be some concession or option with IWnet and the clans will all go "oh well that's fine" and buy it anyway.
RKN @ Nov 4th 2009 11:22AM
If the stubborn IW and Activision do make a concession regarding the service, then that makes that perhaps the voice of the PC gamer still rings in their ears?
ameenali_khan @ Nov 4th 2009 11:46AM
Er, I do give a flying "leap" about BF:BC2, the graphics are mind blowing, and game play is a little better than MW2, cause It feels much better. Also the weapons, and the team co-ordination looks slick, which is absent in MW2 (Spec-Ops is Co-op)
I love DICE's presentation in BF:BC2 compared to IW's in MW2. I agree that MW2 is a whole lot bigger game compared to BF:BC2 ( Just 8 maps !? ) Although I do agree that I would've been bloody pleased about MW2 if it had mod & dedicated server support. I'm sure somebody would hack it in, I'm gonna assemble a team as we speak :D (strip off CoD4's browser function (linked via Xfire & shoe-horn it onto MW2, server side will be a pain, its won't be easy as it sounds though, still need to make a proof on concept on release )
Ameen @ Nov 4th 2009 11:21AM
Er, there was also a post about 2 Swedish guys giving them cake. Also, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is awesome, the graphics, gameplay, etc this coming from a COD4 veteran ! Bought my game before launch [Nov 6, 2007] ;)
I love CoD4, the mods, the usermaps (they're much better than usual ones, for ex google: rat_house) , etc. IW had been a stellar company up until its success got to their heads, also don't blame Activision, all the changes made were by IW.
I would've preferred BF:BC2 even if there wasn't this MW2 fiasco. Its that good !!
If ya guys prefer a good ol' game of CoD4, ping me @ Xfire: aMjAZz

Also by "stamps" I clearly meant college-branded return address stickers.
The funny thing is that the school (TCNJ) sends you those stickers in order to harp on your nostalgia and send them money. Instead, it got this guy to send that money to Sweden.
ShadowOp @ Nov 4th 2009 11:38AM
On the news thing Dice had for Eddie, they also sent out a fan kit (box art, wallpapers, etc)... I still prefer the spec ops kit of BF2 more but this will do... for now
ShadowOp @ Nov 4th 2009 11:42AM
Now thats a big time ZING to your university, and a $60 + to Dice.
ShadowOp @ Nov 4th 2009 12:05PM
what are you talking about, I LOVE to listen to people cry... (especially when it's something that I cry about all alone at night, in the darkness, underneath my pillow, YELLING GAWD! WHY?!!!).
what was I commenting about?
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 4th 2009 12:22PM
Funny, I remember when PC players hated D.I.C.E. because Bad Company 1 didn't come out for PC. I remember they were upset because Battlefield 1943 isn't coming in a timely matter. Battlefield games are great, but this is just stupid. $60 to a company that is owned by a multi-billion dollar publisher EA. He could have just bought the game, or at least two copies of it.
Lets see if the rest of the PC community catches on, and what they will do. MW2 is the third best selling (pre-orders) game right now so that says a lot of this boycott.
Good for him, though. He is literally voting with his wallet. Not something you see gamers do much anymore.
jynxycat @ Nov 4th 2009 12:33PM
All these people bitching, are still going to buy MW2.
The Internet is just on the flavor of the month complaining spree. As soon as Mw2 comes out, people will play it, find out that it's just fine, and move on to the next complaint flavor of the month.
MLWW @ Nov 4th 2009 12:43PM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA what an idiot.
Mr Khan @ Nov 4th 2009 1:19PM
This isn't just Infinity Ward's trend. My guess is that they did this in lieu of Activision charging users for server play. It's an almost universal trend (outside of Valve, at least) to try and surcharge PC gamers, though we can debate the reasons why (piracy, trying to justify PC development in lieu of console development, whatever)
Josh @ Nov 4th 2009 1:32PM
Awesome.
knightwing19 @ Nov 4th 2009 3:47PM
Wow an attempt at a cheap shot at IW. Too bad COD 4 and MW2 are far superior games than the teamkilling, glitchfest that is the Bad Company series.
