Hans Zimmer believes in the legitimacy of games, approached MW2 as a 'novice'
Hans Zimmer may have a laundry list of feature films he contributed to on his resume, but the renowned film composer says he still had to approach his work on Modern Warfare 2 "truly as a novice." In an interview with USA Today, he speaks like a true convert. When asked about the legitimacy of games as an art form, he frankly states, "Absolutely, that we can't even question anymore."
Zimmer says his first experience working on a game has, unsurprisingly, been very different than working on a film. "I had never done this before, so it was nice to sort of go at it a little fresh." Due to the length of major video games (even the shorter ones), Zimmer was forced to create considerably more music than the average project. "I never added it up [because] then I would have panicked," he admits. Looks like that "ridiculous" budget was good for something!

Downvotes kick in.
C'mon don't be hatin' on Hans Zimmer.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Nov 4th 2009 6:20PM
You shut your dirty little pleasure hole and give respect to the man who orchestrated "Radio Flyer".
Special Agent Steve @ Nov 4th 2009 6:21PM
Yeah, I'd rather read another article on Hans Zimmer than most of the stuff on Joystiq. Also, MW2 comes out in a week... it's supposed to be one of the biggest launches in Video Game history- cut it some slack.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 4th 2009 6:22PM
I have no problem with Hans Zimmer. I think he is a GREAT composer.
I have a problem with all of the MW2 flying around Joystiq.
Looks like I'll been downvoted for being misunderstood. Oh well.
Mr.ESC @ Nov 4th 2009 6:24PM
You think that's bad? When GTAIV was released we had updates every 10 minutes.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 4th 2009 6:26PM
Pretty sure no one misunderstood you, they just didn't like your comment.
Durden @ Nov 4th 2009 6:29PM
It's not only MW2. Remember all the Batman: AA coverage? Uncharted 2? Scribblenauts? So what if Joystiq gets a little excited about a great game coming out. We come here for posts related to gaming and that's what we get.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 4th 2009 6:34PM
@tmacairjordan87
My comment was directed towards MW2.
The first comments were offended by my attacks toward Zimmer.
How is that not a misunderstanding?
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 4th 2009 6:35PM
How dare Joystiq cover one of the biggest releases of this year! How dare they cover the fact that an important figure in film is doing a project for video games!
The game is coming out in less than a week. I advise that you stay off the interwebs if you do not want to hear anything about MW2. Rest assured everyone will be covering this non-stop.
Reuben @ Nov 4th 2009 6:39PM
"Looks like I'll been downvoted for being misunderstood. Oh well."
Your original comment was intentionally ambiguous. No one would have understood what you really meant.
JXCgunrunna @ Nov 4th 2009 6:49PM
What are you even talking about? Its about how some of the greats outside of game development are finally seeing Games as a form as real art and entertainment.
Ulquiorra Cifer @ Nov 4th 2009 6:08PM
My anticipation for MW2 has saturated with all this coverage
Zing @ Nov 4th 2009 7:02PM
Joystiq did its job then, they're being paid by DICE y'know
Ashkental @ Nov 4th 2009 6:10PM
I have great respect for the man...
He's the modern age John Williams
Zsavior @ Nov 4th 2009 7:20PM
Um not trying to split hairs or anything but John Wiliams Is the Modern age John Wiliams

Eh @ Nov 4th 2009 8:12PM
ya... John Williams still makes movie soundtracks, he did the last Harry Potter movie. Theres only one John Williams, he doesnt have a successor yet.
Obie @ Nov 4th 2009 9:01PM
This guy is one of my fave composers, but he has also composed some forgettable stuff, hopefully he will bring his A game to this project!
Ridgecity @ Nov 5th 2009 2:38AM
If John Williams is Da Vinci, this guy is Michaelangelo.
An artist of this level can do say games can be an art. Now it's up to developers to reach the summit in art form.
Mr.ESC @ Nov 4th 2009 6:12PM
Hans Zimmer is a genius,I love his work I hope the soundtrack is more memorable than the one in COD4.In fact I barely remember any track from COD4.
JXCgunrunna @ Nov 4th 2009 6:50PM
You don't remember the rap during the credits? it was actually decent.
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 4th 2009 7:04PM
What are you talking about? The score in COD4 was awesome. It fit the game perfectly, and matched up with the moments in the game. Added tension and relief when needed.
I can understand why you don't remember it, the game did come out two years ago...
Vcize @ Nov 4th 2009 10:39PM
Honestly I don't really remember the score in CoD4 well either, and I'm a film/game score junkie.
maveric101 @ Nov 4th 2009 11:20PM
i love Marty O'Donnell's work in Halo... i'll be interested to see it MW2's audio can match it (imo).
TriFF51 @ Nov 4th 2009 6:15PM
Wow I didn't know he was doing the soundtrack....probably not getting COD4 but the soundtrack will kick ass.
jynxycat @ Nov 4th 2009 6:19PM
I dunno about COD4, it was a good game.
As far as MW2, the music in the game is pretty slick, helps build the tension is the right places, and keeps the pace flowing naturally elsewhere.
TriFF51 @ Nov 5th 2009 12:41AM
Whoops...idk why I said COD4. I meant MW2....I wasn't that into COD4, so we'll see.
Bobs @ Nov 4th 2009 6:22PM
Hans is the man. Looking at his IMDB page, all those movies have fantastic soundtracks. No doubt that he'll be amazing in MW2.
Germans know what they're doing.

"you know the germans always make good stuff"
snowtires @ Nov 4th 2009 6:27PM
Please, Hans Zimmer doesn't write music anymore. He'll do a rough outline or two of some themes and then his lackeys at Remote Control do three months of 14 hour days to get it finished. My roommate interned there (Remote Control) and he said Hans has pretty much become 'executive producer' on all of 'his' music. The entire Remote Control staff worked round-the-clock to get the score to The Simpsons Movie done, while Hans was out of there at 5 or 6 every night.
Ridgecity @ Nov 5th 2009 2:40AM
In these times, it's impossible to work on a single thing. Specially when you make soundtracks for 5 movies a year.
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 4th 2009 6:31PM
Hans Zimmer is an amazing composer. To have him actual do video games now is an amazing opportunity for him, and us gamers who will be able to listen to this world class composer. Many people in film are now doing projects for videogames which is great. Now when people talk about how legitimate games are as an art form, just look at all the actors, actresses, etc... doing work in video games.
Dr. steve brule @ Nov 5th 2009 12:46AM
@vcize, you're misinterpreting sean connery's real life theme music with zimmerman's stuff. that music is in every sean connery movie.
Dr. steve brule @ Nov 5th 2009 12:49AM
heh, oops ... down one.
@ben gilbert, be a doll and just delete these 2 replies. kthx
Cass-D @ Nov 4th 2009 6:53PM
I've got three-to-one odds on MW2 having the same musical score in the action sequences as these notable films
Armegedon
Pirates of the Caribean
Crimson Tide
The Rock
And this new one called Prince of Persia
All joking aside Hans is a gifted man even if he does recycle the same sound in some of his movies. I couldn't do what he does and kudos to him I'm glad the video game industry is finally getting the A list attention it deserves.
Now if we could only get those gaming hypocrites to let 6DaysinFalijuh come out. I hear there is terrorism in MW2 so what is the difference really. You act like a terrorist killing innocent civilians or you act as the U.S. Military terrorizing Iraqi Civilians. I see no difference and yet we are extremely excited about MW2.
Here comes the downvote!
Bobs @ Nov 4th 2009 9:54PM
Actually, if anything; it'll sound way more like Black Hawk Down since he did compose that.
For the middle-eastern missions that is.
For the other settings, it'll most likely be composed of the list that you gave.
So no downvote :)
Vcize @ Nov 4th 2009 10:37PM
Crimson Tide and The Rock have a couple parts that sound literally identical.
Still, it's an awesome kind of identical ;)
Dr. steve brule @ Nov 5th 2009 12:49AM
@vcize, you're misinterpreting sean connery's real life theme music with zimmerman's stuff. that music is in every sean connery movie.
Ferdasyn @ Nov 5th 2009 7:40AM
Wrong. You don't kill civilians.
Discotheque @ Nov 4th 2009 7:17PM
Not interested in the game, will check out the soundtrack CD. Though I'm just expecting a rehash of his old work.
The man has produced some of my favorite scores of all time, but he tends to rehash his work alot. Kind of like James Horner (who I love as well : / )
Misfit Toy @ Nov 4th 2009 8:51PM
I think The Dark Knight is his most brilliant work yet. Can't wait to hear what he's done with MW2.
Vcize @ Nov 4th 2009 10:36PM
Hans Zimmer is awesome in so many ways.
I've been following his career for more than a decade now. I'm rarely ever disappointed in his work.
Ridgecity @ Nov 5th 2009 2:53AM
You can't really say thanks to all actors getting their voices in games. The games as art form comes when someone sees a game and makes their senses tingle. That's art.
