iPhone App Store tops 100K items, 2 billion downloads

If Gameloft's sales figures are any indication, the App Store shows no signs of slowing down in the game department. Now, if only that alleged iPhone app piracy rate could be brought under control.

For some reason, iphone and "high quality games" doesn't really mix well with me. Maybe somewhat entertaining. But high quality? Compared to what, I wonder.

There are some really good apps in there but I'd say at least 2/3 of the apps are pure crap and makes you wonder why they got passed Apple's approval to start with.
the gems are few and far between unfortunately but you notice a step up in quality and innovation recently.

Even if the app store is filled with absolute crap (which it is) it still has hundreds of awesome apps.
I've tried the Android Market and even went to see what Palm had to offer, but something about iPhone's apps just seem more polished (the good ones of course).
Apple's commercials are pretty annoying and calling the iPhone and iPod Touch a gaming device is a big stretch, however I can't deny they've made a solid PMP with great applications. Hell the hacking community alone is worth checking out!

Unless of course you consider that the ads targeted at pretty normal folks - generic phone users - for many of whom the gaming associates firstly with WinMine or Solitaire.

I have a few games that I bought and I have to admit that I get bored with them fast and never really play them (except for Baseball Slugger). So, even though the quality of some is good, I just don't find the device too fun to play on.
That being said, I see people playing games of ever sort on the train each day. Heck, yesterday I saw 2 guys racing each other in some game on their respective phones and having a ball. So, some people are loving the gaming on them.

I like that you said the app store tops 100K items, because as we all know very few of those items are what a sane person would call an app. Much of them are literally just fart noises.

MS needs to open up their "app store" for the Zune already. IDK how hard it is to see a successful open app store and not think "Hey, we should do that. We already have a powerful PMP, why not?" But they take the idiot approach and do it on a one by one basis. Its stupid.

Good for Apple. With Android phones starting to creep up everywhere (the Sony Ericsson one is looking REALLY nice) they'll need all the firepower they can get.
The biggest problem for Android is a program that syncs and organizes everything like iTunes.

As a soon to be owner of the new Moto Droid, I can only hope quality apps will make their way to that phone as well. Hopefully the 'open source' architecture will generate good ideas. The keyboard and directional pad should trump using a touchscreen for all gaming...

Wow, thats still 50,000 apps that are useful, even if your statistics are true, which, I doubt they are, still pretty impressive. Besides, why would Apple give a shit if they just got 2 billion downloads. That is the important part for them.

of course my numbers are made up.....and I'm not certain but I don't think Apple makes money off lite versions...as they get a percent of sales....and lite versions are free
