iPhone App Store tops 100K items, 2 billion downloads
Apple's App Store has attained over 100,000 fart simulators apps and blown by the two billion download mark. GI.biz reports that games make up 19.6 percent of the store's content. EA Mobile VP Travis Boatman notes that the store, which is now available in 77 countries, has allowed his company to make high quality games that "have been a huge success with customers."
If Gameloft's sales figures are any indication, the App Store shows no signs of slowing down in the game department. Now, if only that alleged iPhone app piracy rate could be brought under control.

Definitely read that as "iPhone App Store tops 100 Kittens..."
carmaction @ Nov 4th 2009 12:04PM
Dude, nothing tops 100 kittens. Not even 15 Ghandis.
Dr. steve brule @ Nov 4th 2009 5:40PM
what if a team of 100 kittens carried ghandi around on a sled of some sort?
... or is that just too much?
Choke A Smurf @ Nov 4th 2009 11:50AM
For some reason, iphone and "high quality games" doesn't really mix well with me. Maybe somewhat entertaining. But high quality? Compared to what, I wonder.
Orchard Pear @ Nov 4th 2009 11:53AM
Compared to those Nintendo Game and Watch games, perhaps?
Wait, nevermind.. those might actually have been of higher quality than an iPhone game.. and better controls to boot.
NaeemTHM @ Nov 4th 2009 12:23PM
Probably in comparison to other cellphone games.
Guibs @ Nov 4th 2009 11:50AM
There are some really good apps in there but I'd say at least 2/3 of the apps are pure crap and makes you wonder why they got passed Apple's approval to start with.
the gems are few and far between unfortunately but you notice a step up in quality and innovation recently.
NaeemTHM @ Nov 4th 2009 12:27PM
Even if the app store is filled with absolute crap (which it is) it still has hundreds of awesome apps.
I've tried the Android Market and even went to see what Palm had to offer, but something about iPhone's apps just seem more polished (the good ones of course).
Apple's commercials are pretty annoying and calling the iPhone and iPod Touch a gaming device is a big stretch, however I can't deny they've made a solid PMP with great applications. Hell the hacking community alone is worth checking out!

> calling the iPhone and iPod Touch a gaming device is a big stretch
Unless of course you consider that the ads targeted at pretty normal folks - generic phone users - for many of whom the gaming associates firstly with WinMine or Solitaire.

I have a few games that I bought and I have to admit that I get bored with them fast and never really play them (except for Baseball Slugger). So, even though the quality of some is good, I just don't find the device too fun to play on.
That being said, I see people playing games of ever sort on the train each day. Heck, yesterday I saw 2 guys racing each other in some game on their respective phones and having a ball. So, some people are loving the gaming on them.
JoeStillLife @ Nov 4th 2009 11:57AM
and how many of those apps are actually good and useful?
pax copia @ Nov 4th 2009 12:04PM
I like that you said the app store tops 100K items, because as we all know very few of those items are what a sane person would call an app. Much of them are literally just fart noises.
Cj @ Nov 4th 2009 12:07PM
MS needs to open up their "app store" for the Zune already. IDK how hard it is to see a successful open app store and not think "Hey, we should do that. We already have a powerful PMP, why not?" But they take the idiot approach and do it on a one by one basis. Its stupid.
CarpeD1em500 @ Nov 4th 2009 12:18PM
Joystiq, this wasn't a story when Engadget ran it, and it's still not a story now.
carmaction @ Nov 4th 2009 12:23PM
You came to a news blog to complain about an article you didn't have to read, too?! SOULMATES!
Stevetrop @ Nov 4th 2009 12:53PM
I wonder if or how far into planning apple is to traversing their iphone and ipod touch into a home based console.
MRBlue @ Nov 4th 2009 1:00PM
Good for Apple. With Android phones starting to creep up everywhere (the Sony Ericsson one is looking REALLY nice) they'll need all the firepower they can get.
The biggest problem for Android is a program that syncs and organizes everything like iTunes.
Dale @ Nov 4th 2009 1:15PM
Maybe they can adopt Palm's, uh, "successful" strategy of syncing with iTunes too? :D
Professor Lario @ Nov 4th 2009 1:21PM
As a soon to be owner of the new Moto Droid, I can only hope quality apps will make their way to that phone as well. Hopefully the 'open source' architecture will generate good ideas. The keyboard and directional pad should trump using a touchscreen for all gaming...

With 20K of those apps being straight shit and 30K being lite/free versions that number is meaningless
warboss72 @ Nov 4th 2009 2:23PM
Wow, thats still 50,000 apps that are useful, even if your statistics are true, which, I doubt they are, still pretty impressive. Besides, why would Apple give a shit if they just got 2 billion downloads. That is the important part for them.
Duke @ Nov 4th 2009 4:02PM
Aren't the numbers you just threw around meaningless as well? At least they have the fact they made a shitload of cash to back their numbers up as having meaning.
Dr. steve brule @ Nov 4th 2009 5:46PM
is that you in your avatar chris? you look so angry.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Nov 4th 2009 7:04PM
of course my numbers are made up.....and I'm not certain but I don't think Apple makes money off lite versions...as they get a percent of sales....and lite versions are free
