The record company has a legal team that deals with contracts. A major band like No Doubt wont just gloss over a contract that deals with the rights to their music and likeness.

Apparently Jimi Hendrix's estate didn't have a problem reading though the contracts, as they made the demands to lock the character down, and they actually got what they wanted. I don't really think they are that poorly written.

This is the most play No Doubt has had in the last 10 years, they should be thanking Activision.

Normally I would be upset at such a frivolous lawsuit...but its Activision, so by all means, sue away!

Yay! Lets tie up the legal system on bullshit like this while important cases are ignored! Regardless of the company getting sued, lawsuits like these are not doing anybody any good. Listen, I hate McDonalds with a passion, but do you think I support that bitch who spilled coffee on her lap, or that morbidly obese man who couldn't stop jamming Big Mac's down his throat to know that the shit will kill him? Fuck those people, and fuck Courtney Love and Gwen Stefani. Read your fucking contracts people. Everyone else doesn't seem to be having problems doing it.

Sorry man. Gaia didn't create a Power Ring that grants judiciary powers so I really can't do much in this situation. Tell you what, I'll go down to Santa Monica, CA and throw rocks at Kotick's office window from the parking lot and yell obscenities...that'll learn him.

Big companies using vague and tricky contracts to take advantage of spoiled, naive, and quite retarded musicians? That's never happened before!!!!

These artists need to get better attorneys. Or maybe there is just a big gap in legal understanding of the medium for lawyers.

But they did get permission. Same with Courtney Love.

If they aren't going to fucking read the paperwork, then it is their fault. Look at Jimi Hendrix's estate. THEY read the paperwork, and guess what? They got what they wanted. Ozzy and Santana read the paperwork, and they both said that they don't really give a shit and it's just a game.

that is just weak on no doubt's part. guitar hero and the company need to get this together though. they need to understand people from the offset. just like with kurt. they need to fix this crap already.

I don't even think the Cobain thing is an issue. The game never forces you to use the character outside of his songs in career mode. If you cause him to do stupid, out-of-character antics, then it is your own fault.

I can go put Kurt Cobain's face on a Chip'n'dales dancer cartoon at JibJab.com. It would be insane to blame JibJab for what I had done

They don't need to fix the crap, but I think they should. Just to shut people up. They limited disc characters to on-disc content only on Band Hero, so they can obviously limit characters on the GH5 engine. I think a patch is coming, as they have the X+ drums glitch to work out too, and I think that was also fixed in Band Hero.

Well if we're lucky artists will no longer want to have there likeness in any "Hero" game, so now there will not be 5 "Hero" games a year.

Sex with prostitutes? Isn't the whole point of Band Hero to be family-friendly?

Not "exactly." Band Hero is meant to be more accessable. It has more popular acts and Top 40 hits. That being said, the rating is also E10. It supports all of the stuff you can play in GH5.

Lego Rock Band stays more in the Rock genre, but it is also strictly a family game, with no support for "questionable" contentent at all. It doesn't support all of RB2's stuff, as only family friendly content is accepted.

In other words, Band Hero = Top 40 game. Lego RB = Family Friendly Rock game.

@ Hafkie

Nicely summarized.

Nonetheless, I still don't see how songs about nuclear war and reckless drug use qualify as "family friendly". Not to mention all the sexual innuendo that no doubt (pun unintentional, I swear) pervades most of the track list.

Activision wouldn't be having these problems if they spent more time in development and working with artists to get feedback (see: Beatles RB) instead of merely faxing paperwork back and forth so they can put out another new game the following month.

No Doubt is a terribly generic band, though.

Music Industry lawyers in general are struggling with emerging tech in every single avenue. They are barely figuring out how to sell digital music, they don't understand that physical media is dying when they do attempt to utilize technology they fail 9 times out of 10. They barely have a clue what they're doing and I'm guessing this is just evidence of that.

It would be shocking to me if we discover that Activision was not writing contracts in such a way that grants them rights to do exactly what they're doing without triggering a red flag with the RIAA / Interscope lawyers.

I'm willing to bet they have nearly explicit signed consent to do exactly what they're doing. But it's record industry lawyers claim to fame to stand and shout "that's illegal! and you're costing us millions!" whenever they don't like something.

Is it shady on Activisions part? A little, I guess. But it's their job to make a fun game, not ensure the egos of the talent that signs on with them go unbruised.

No Doubt is the only good thing to ever come out of Gwen Stefani. Not great - too generic for that - but decent pop music nevertheless. Anything else she's made is a steaming pile of... well you get my point.

As for the dispute - a second lawsuit matching Courtney Love does indeed seem to indicate something fishy. My money is on ambigiously worded contracts combined by Activision people making a lot of false verbal promises. But time will tell as the lawsuits continue. Until then we are all just guessing.

You do realize that I hold no bias whatsoever, right?

The only negative thing I ever say about Rock Band is what a pile of douchebags the fanbase tends to be.

RB = GH

They are the same fucking game with different songs.

Which is why I always rage over RB fanboys downvoting ever pro-GH comment anybody ever makes and drowing the GH related stories in "omg milk lol."

In Guitar Hero 5 Activision made it possible to bring Kurt Cobain back to life and fucking rape him by forcing him to sing and dance around to stuff like You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift and Superstition by Stevie Wonder. What the fuck..

If Activision isn't going to be a single bit respectful to Kurt Cobain's likeness, I don't think Gwen Stefani has a snowball's chance in Hell of making them care.

But why should they care? It's not like Gwen Stefani's respect is going to be damaged by this. Holla Back Girl? Yeah.. nobody takes you seriously anymore anyway. Kurt Cobain didn't have a choice, it was made for him by Courtney Love.

Gwen Stefani signed the paperwork, this is what she gets. Sorry.

In other words, READ SHIT BEFORE YOU SIGN IT lol

This is the difference between the music lovers at Harmonix and the business tycoons at Activision. Harmonix respects the music and the musicians; Activision respects the money they plan to make. I mean Harmonix even worked with Yoko Ono to make sure Beatles Rockband was authentic.

Of course Gwen Stefanni's mad about being made to sing a song about having sex with prostitutes. She IS a whore, so it probably hit a little close to home.

Anyone who would take money for performing "Hollaback Girl" is a whore.

I just purchased BandHero and I love it....in fact I didn't even notice that Gwen was one of the singers at all until this controversy. I'm still not sure if she is the one that I think she is. So the likeness is based on her, but doesn't really look exactly like her...besides I'm too busy having fun to care who is singing - I'm playing the guitar!
