Prototype Wii game found in developer portfolio

As Kotaku notes, it looks rather like Konami's Jackal, prompting the site to speculate that it's a ReBirth made for Konami, like the recent Castlevania, Contra, and Gradius games. If true, it would be the first ReBirth title not to be developed by M2 in Japan. Of course, the American side of Konami is also working on refreshes of old Konami franchises in the form of Rocket Knight, so there is precedent.

Jackel + remake = Instant Boner™

(Jackal NES + Virtual Console) > (Jackal + *this* Remake)

You've Trademarked that?! I'll never be able to afford the royalties!

Jackal is a great game, and (unfortunately) it would make sense that there is more interest in a remake in Western regions than in its native Japan.
The screenshots and developer leave me awfully skeptical. There have been dozens of 3D remakes of classic games outsourced to under-funded no-name companies, and the general consensus is Bionic Commando Rearmed is the only one that didn't blow chunks. I would be a lot more excited if they were developing this internally at Konami and spent some extra money to make 2D sprites that would better capture the feel and aesthetics of the original.
This looks like another cynical attempt to cash-in on nostalgia and Chunks is my dog.

The title lead me to believe that this was a Wii port of the game Prototype.
With that thought still in my mind, the screenshot made me smile.
Djiego @ Nov 4th 2009 6:47PM
the title is misleading, I thought they were talking about THE Prototype game.
Djiego @ Nov 4th 2009 6:49PM
crap, Spyder beat me to it xD
Jimbotron @ Nov 4th 2009 7:43PM
How is it misleading? The game is a prototype, which is what the title said. Prototype has an actual meaning beyond the title of some mediocre game.
GlassAgate @ Nov 4th 2009 7:46PM
Assuming that it will later become "Jackal Rebirth", I hope
that the graphics get a lot smoother. I think that I'd rather have
a direct top-down view, rather than the view shown in the picture.
I think that it would be more like the original game with a top-down
view.
If they don't get the original, corny music, I don't know if I'll be
able to get into it.
In another thought, who owns the rights to "Cabal"?
Casey @ Nov 4th 2009 7:19PM
I almost fainted thinking this was a Multiplayer remake of Return Fire. Remember that game? It screams for a XBLA/PSN/WiiWare update
Use to play that thing for hours and hour trying to beat once level. Drving the Hummer with the Flag while the Lone Ranger theme song plays in the background, and your friend or the PC is lobbing missiles and bullets at you the whole time.
Man that game was intense!
DarkTetsuya @ Nov 4th 2009 8:45PM
Well, Jackal did have support for two players originally... perhaps a four-player mode could be implemented in rebirth?!
Haon @ Nov 4th 2009 7:21PM
Holy shit Jackal was my favorite two player game next to Contra. Please let this be true. That top down shooter that came out a couple years ago for live arcade was a real disappointment.
GlassAgate @ Nov 4th 2009 7:50PM
What game are you referring to? Would that
be the "Assault Heroes" games, or that
game "Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3"?
I really liked the AH games.
BrothaMann @ Nov 4th 2009 8:26PM
all the scenes depicted are Jackal (NES) locations. A majority are from the first level.
I wish they would Rebirth with original content instead of all this "remaking the original with 16 bit graphics" tripe (though this looks like PS1 quality, yippee?) ; release the original on VC, use the original awesome gameplay, and be creative.
4 tanks, split screen, scenario editor, a new campaign, obviously leaderboards.. but probably not, eh!
BrothaMann @ Nov 4th 2009 8:28PM
I meant jeeps, but ya'll knew that.. but hey, add tanks, add a helicopter as unlockables... could be fun!
Shadow31 @ Nov 4th 2009 9:17PM
"an almost top-down, zoomed-out perspective"
TwEE @ Nov 5th 2009 9:41AM
So making this with pointer control like that wii play tank game would be smart.. sucks that 3rd aren't very smart when it comes to the wii.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Nov 5th 2009 12:49PM
Jackal! Jackal! Is it Jackal! It's Jackal! Jackal! Is it Jackal?!
