Ubisoft talks dancing, fitness and party games on Natal, PS3 Motion Controller

Guillemot returned to Natal when discussing the demand for new experiences. "People ... continue to want new games," Guillemot explained. "They are interested by new innovations, new genres of games, and we are working on that. And we think that the new product from Microsoft, 3D camera, will help next year to continue to grow the market."
Asked whether he thought Natal and PS3 Motion Controller would help their respective manufacturers sell more hardware and grow the market for Ubisoft, or just help Ubisoft sell more software for the devices, Guillemot explained, "What I think is that Natal and the new Motion Controller for the PS3 will ... allow us to create games that we can only create for the Wii before and with the ability to then do it on PS3 and 360 some dancing games, some fitness games, some party games as well. This will allow those consoles to increase their base ... we think it will help those two companies to broaden their audience."
When asked if he thought the lack of precision delivered by the Wii's brand of motion control could be partly responsible for slow software sales on that console and if technologies like Project Natal and PS3 Motion Controller would help, Guillemot explained that technologies like the Wii Balance Board and Wii MotionPlus can lead to "a great experience and sometimes better than on other consoles." So as to prevent any confusion, Ubisoft's Alain Martinez chimed in and clarified, "You ask whether it will be more precise on Natal and on PS3 and I believe Natal we are quite satisfied by the level of precision we can get and we think it can be very good for the games."
But what about the level of precision for the PS3 Motion Controller? We weren't going to say anything, but this is the second earnings call that Ubisoft brass managed to single out Project Natal and snub the PS3 Motion Controller, though the snub comes after many general statements about both. What gives?

All of these PS3 Motion Controller (and I guess Natal) games sound like afterthoughts for my purchase selection.
Here I will play Demon's Souls and consider it a game worthy of my time, while next to it I will play "Motion Game #59" for about 5 minutes and then just set it aside for a rainy day.
Now that I think about it, that's what I thought of my Wii when I still had one.
It all makes sense now.

The first thing I thought when I read the plans for Ubisoft's Natal games:
PASS

I think these things will be great for my parents. They love their Wii, but really only the 1st party stuff interests them.
I think Natal would be the easiest for them. If they can just jump in and out of camera site to play a game, that is a lot easier than not having Wii remotes charged or trying to take the strap off your wrist.
Since the user can use their whole body in the game I think it will provide them with a better work out.
I know my arms were killing me sword fighting in Wii Sports Resorts. I can only imagine what Natal is going to be capable of.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 4th 2009 5:53PM
Without an object to substitute for a 'sword' or 'lightsaber' or whatever the game features, the end result will likely feel rather weak.
It's as if there was a clown blowing balloons for all the kids. As a child you think "oh boy, that would be totally be awesome if he could make me a balloon space station!", however when you approach the man all he is able to give you is a balloon flower.
I would look / feel like an idiot playing a sword game with Natal.
I would only look like an idiot playing a sword game on PS3 Motion or the Wii.

My parents just got a PC with Windows 7 on it. What I'm going to do for them here soon is get them this: http://www.cetoncorp.com/ProductsWMC.php
This device plugs into their PC and will allow them to record up to 6 Live HD Channels Simultaneously. The cable card will run about $4 a month. So this will free up a lot of money from their cable TV set top box rentals.
Let's face it, people watch more TV than they do movies.
My parents have 2 DVRs @ $16 a month. I could buy 2 used 360 or even 2 brand new 360s and save them money from here on out.
Plus with Natal and video messaging I could see them using the Xbox 360 a whole lot more in their daily lives.
Caveman @ Nov 4th 2009 5:58PM
@SpyderTaco
That's a rather weak opinion. You only need 2 accessories with Natal. The camera and you.
Simple and convenient. Do you own a Wii? They're a huge hit when the family is around for holidays. If you can't feel stupid around your own family, you have a really low self image.
We can all laugh at ourselves in our family. It's part of the fun. Sorry you've never experienced it or that you are that shy.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 4th 2009 6:01PM
Good point. I think that the media features of something like Natal reminds me a lot of Minority Report. Strictly looking at it from that point of view it seems rather useful and unique, and I think your parents will get a lot of enjoyment out of it, but as a game enthusiast writing on a blog about video games I don't see the value.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 4th 2009 6:02PM
As with the 'family' comment, they actually really enjoy the games that are provided across the PSN as well as XBLA. However most of the entertainment can be found in games like Rock Band.
It has nothing to do with being shy, it has to do with an annoyance with the idea of playing a game designed for 8yr olds.
Caveman @ Nov 4th 2009 6:02PM
Any really could you feel any dumber if you manage to do this?

If you blog about games than surely you must agree that the more people that get involved with this industry, the more it will grow. These motion games open up huge possibilities for gaming industry.
Unless your blog is strictly for the hardcore user, but that's only one part of the pie. I don't fear the bigger picture. I love all games. I can only play so much COD4, I like other small indie games too. I work 60 hours a week and go to school full time as well. I find that a game more on my iPhone now than my Xbox. Why? Because I can pick it up and put it down. I don't have to worry about 80 hours worth of game play.
MrAlex @ Nov 4th 2009 5:54PM
Yay, they finally understand what the consumer is lacking when it comes to motion controls!

NO MORE FUCKING FITNESS GAMES GAWT DAMNIT
Highimpact1 @ Nov 4th 2009 6:08PM
Yeah, how are dancing, fitness, and party games innovative? It seems to me they are the easiest and ONLY games developers have succeeded in making well, and I think it's about time they expanded to other genres. How fun would Oblivion or Dragon Age be if you could have the option to fight (sword, casting spells, archery, etc.) using Natal? Sure it would be difficult to implement at first, and there would certainly be many attempts to perfect the feel and performance, but that's something I would actually buy. And that's just a random example (albeit a bad one at that) for a new type of game using motion control. With the power of the 360 being introduced, I think almost any type of game is possible. Who knows, there's even possibilities to create whole new type of games which just wouldn't have been feasible without this new technology!
Caveman @ Nov 4th 2009 6:12PM
@Highimpact1
Great post! I agree with what you are saying.
I think people must have very narrow minds if they think developers are going to crow bar motion controls into every single game.
skyzbig @ Nov 4th 2009 6:04PM
So Ubisoft are ignoring the PS3 controller?
As a PS3 owner....YES!!
Mu93n @ Nov 4th 2009 6:06PM
Dear Sony and Microsoft,
I dont know if you guys knew this or not, but theres this system that the video game company named Nintendo makes. its called the Wii. iy has motion cantrols for its games. most if not all of the games on this console are "dancing, fitness, and party games". so Sony and Microsoft. DO NOT GO THROUGH WITH THIS OR YOU WILL END UP MERGING WITH NINTENDO AND BECOME A PUTRID EVIL HYBRID DEMON FROM HELL!!!!! thank you and have a nice day.
Sincerily Yours,
Mu93n

Leave it to Ubisoft to make the shovelware... sigh..
BillJRJ @ Nov 4th 2009 6:30PM
My thoughts exactly. As much as I don't want it to happen, I can see lots of developers (not just Ubisoft) pumping out crappy motion games just like on the Wii. Xbox/Playstation have their share of shovelware games now, but motion controls are just going to open the flood gates.
Time to find my raincoat and galoshes.
Caveman @ Nov 4th 2009 6:36PM
@BillJRJ
Yeah, but they can use the profits from those cheap to develop, easy to produce games to fund blockbuster titles like the new Splinter Cell.
Dreaded Fear @ Nov 5th 2009 10:55AM
If their shovel-ware directly funds good games (Assasins Creed, Splinter Cell) then I'm fine with it considering I don't buy any of their other crap. If it funds even more shovel-ware then screw you Ubisoft, put that money into your good franchises.
NeoMahi @ Nov 4th 2009 8:17PM
Bleh... Sounds like a bunch of crap to the Hardcore gamer, but... I guess if it can help increase the numbers, then house mommies will buy them to excercise and watch Netflix, OH! And daddy to finally get some HD video and watch Blu-ray all in the same unit! Nice. Then their kids can play games. Wow.
jahd5000 @ Nov 4th 2009 10:02PM
I gotta admit, I only have hope in Sony's own usage of their hardware. Like always, SCE brings the most creative and PS3 specific working/polished games, and hopefully tey'll do two or three games asides from any of their (sue to be) wii-like crap, that will make me happy of buying the PMCs.
Caveman @ Nov 5th 2009 2:25PM
You must be one of those people paid by Sony to post on blogs.
jahd5000 @ Nov 5th 2009 2:27PM
Yeah, Sony paid me to say the truth and also pointing out that the'll make wii-like crap for sure.
You truly live up to your name.
Union @ Nov 4th 2009 10:18PM
Why no Pic of the PMC?
jahd5000 @ Nov 5th 2009 2:28PM
Agree. not like Natal is the only with a fancy camera.
DarkXane @ Nov 5th 2009 12:47AM
So much bullshit Microsoft & Sony said about the Wii-mote... and look at them now, desperate for printing money too...
Myself? I won't be buying NATAL anytime soon unless I see someone in YouTube acting like Jackie Chan in front of the TV while kicking his Grandmother "accidentally" in the face with a low kick... then we see lawsuits... over and over and parodies in youtube again... It's like seeing the Wii Again...
Fane [Grammar Police - Power Of Pedantry] @ Nov 5th 2009 7:18PM
FANBOYS may have talked shit about Wii motion control (and they still are, with good reason), but I can't recall anyone from Sony or Microsoft being anything but mildly positive about the motion control "Revolution". And Microsoft constantly talk shit about their competitors.
You'll also note that many of the same critics are still negative about these motion control devices, regardless of console.

I wish Ubisoft would stop p*ssing about with this cr*p, and start working on the PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360 versions of realMyst, Myst IV & V (I'd definitely buy'em for PS3).
