Analyst: 'Sony was saved by the success of the Wii'

According to DFC, the Wii's mainstream appeal forced Microsoft into a successful, but not entirely dominant position. "The main danger Sony faced was that the Xbox 360 would become embedded as the system of choice. Instead consumers flocked to the Nintendo Wii. The Xbox 360 had solid sales, but they have not been enough to give Microsoft anywhere near a breakout market position," the report explains.
Should enthusiasm for the Wii wane this holiday season, the recent price drop, coupled with with impending release of God of War III, finally positions the PS3 as a viable choice for mainstream consumers, the report notes. EEDAR's Jesse Divnich agrees, pointing out that Sony can finally utilize its leverage from the previous generation. "People who purchase a PS2 are more likely to purchase a PS3 in the future. Consumers, believe it or not, are pretty loyal."
Three years after the launch of the PS3, Blu-ray is also finally becoming a marketable feature for mainstream consumers, the report argues. "This holiday season Blu-ray movies are finally getting a major focus at retail ... Blu-ray clearly now becomes a strong selling point for the PlayStation 3." Undoubtedly, SCEA will create an ad that focuses on this aspect of the system that "only does everything."
While DFC's report comes off as incredibly bullish, it's understandable to see why there's some doubt over Sony's ability to capitalize on the moment. Let's not forget, this is a company that managed to fall from first to last place in the course of a year. "The cards are in Sony's favor and now is the time to make the most of them ... Now is the time for Sony to shine ... or else."

So Sony is accepting the second place? this will be disturbing for the fans...
Linkb8s (XBL: Tenku no Link) @ Nov 5th 2009 4:38AM
I don't think it's a matter of "accepting second place" as it is that there is no hope to reach first place, by either Microsoft or Sony.

I didn't know Sony needed saving, what happen, did Kratos wanted to kill them or what?

OH MY GOD, why can't these damn analists (and not that's not a misspelling) just freaking say they were wrong??!?!?! This is just a sad pathetic attempt at these morons trying to explain why their initial expectations of the 360 winning the war was wrong! They expected the PS3 to die in a fire BUT THEY WERE WRONG. They dont have any idea why the Wii sold as well as it does! The people buying the PS3 now already have 360s! The people with Wii's didnt WAIT for a price drop they went out and bought a new system when they felt like buying it!
MORONS!
mahouneko @ Nov 5th 2009 2:37AM
I think the argument goes like this:
Remember the 2000 Presidential Elections? The votes that were going to Al Gore were siphoned/drained by Ralph Nader to the point where Bush Jr. won the presidency.
What the analysts are saying is that the Wii is the fad that prevented the 360 from becoming a dominant system and now that the fad is fading away, the PS3 is poised to take back its market leadership.
That seems to be what they're trying to say. Meh.
ZayCube @ Nov 5th 2009 2:50AM
@PN04: None of my mates have a PS3 and a 360.. Neither do I.
NOT ME @ Nov 5th 2009 2:42AM
Actually this makes perfect sense.just a little misguided If there was no wii the cheapest console would have been the 360. and as the wii shows with its no playable dvd choice blu ray wouldn't have made a different to the masses. then consider the here and now with 360 arcade being 199. then just throwing in netflix and considering all the good arcade titles the 360.....and dont bother bitching about paying for live because all the casual gamers wouldve just stuck with silver which is still very usable just no multiplayer
tenor77 @ Nov 5th 2009 8:38AM
More commentary from insiders who have never played a video game. Idiots.
Sooooooo by their logic, due to the Wii being a success Sony is in third place, but it could have a shot at #2 now because MS isn't the leader.
Now let's go to bizarro world where the Wii isn't a success and MS is the leader, but.....gasp Sony is already #2.
Thank god Sony lives in our world where they have a shot at #2 instead of already being there.......
Carlos @ Nov 5th 2009 4:21PM
I'm one of those who bought a Wii and never had any intention of buying an Xbox360 or PS3. Two years later, and now I'm playing on a PS3 and hadn't touched the Wii for a long time (hopefully NSMB, Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid will break the jinx :P).
HeXeN @ Nov 5th 2009 12:55AM
I think they are reading to much into it.Wii or no wii, the PS3 would had still had it sales b/c of the PS2's success even at the PS3 high launch price. So I'll finish up by saying Y-a-n-k-e-e-s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lmao, the PS3 is destined to remain in 3rd place this generation, face it
The 360 just has better option, community, and a bigger library of games, Sorry Sony too little too late, dont worry I will still use my Blu-Ray player
1251 @ Nov 5th 2009 1:08AM
That just idiotic to assume. The generation is just now nearing midway.

and with Natal coming up, I just dont see it.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 5th 2009 1:15AM
So you're going to sit there and tell me that Natal is going to stop people from wanting to play Uncharted 2 and God of War III..
You sir have lost your mind.
finnith @ Nov 5th 2009 1:16AM
Don't bet on it.
1251 @ Nov 5th 2009 1:16AM
Natal may sound cool on paper, but it's gotta be proven before you can call it a success.
Bungie wnats Halo to have nothing to do with it. Didn't Clifford say he wanted nothing to do with it?
All that remains for MS to use it for is Fable, and shovelware.
I'm not saying it won't have an impact, it's a very creative idea. But uh, I don't really consider the MLG guys to be active enough to get up and move round :P

Ulquiorra Cifer @ Nov 5th 2009 1:26AM
then explain how your PS3 is going to get out of the last place.
The 360 also has Halo: Reach coming up, and Im sure Natal will real in all the Wii owners this analyst is talking about, face it and Jump In
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 5th 2009 1:31AM

There was a fanboy here about a month ago who said "Jump In" each time he made a comment regarding his dismissal of the PS3 or Wii.

The fact that someone compared you to Sprinkles says a lot.
Oh, and I'm a dude. Sorry to disappoint.
However with enough alcohol I'll be whatever you want me to be.
1251 @ Nov 5th 2009 1:42AM
Last place in terms of sales? Or games?
They're making their way through sales as we speak.
2009 was all PS3. Killzone2, Infamous, Uncharted 2.
Lookit what they got next year. God of War is going to rape every bodies face. Heavy Rain is going to set new graphical and single player standards. MAG is going to add another top-notch FPS to the line up.
The only awards 360 can achieve this year is 360 GOTY(all it had was ODST), and Arcade GOTY(Shadow Complex was the shiiizzzznit).
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 5th 2009 1:50AM
That's odd. Because I'm in the beta for MAG and it's causing me to rethink my pre-order for Modern Warfare 2...
Why the hell am I even talking to you? No matter what I say you will just respond "lolno its stupd kus its liek s0ny".
I'll let the Joystiq community eat you alive instead.
1251 @ Nov 5th 2009 1:55AM
Sooo, you spent either 300-600 on a system, hate it, yet still somehow get beta and demo invitations- and still play it?
C'mon Man!

Cifer stop being delusional. It's not "wat it is or who she/he was", it's you! You are Sprinkles! You may not be the real Sprinkles, but you are the most recent embodiment of his hatred yet, which is close enough to you being the actual Sprinkles.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 5th 2009 2:39AM
It's like Santa clause. There is no REAL Santa Clause, but it is all about the spirit of Santa Clause that brings families together.
The spirit of Sprinkles brings the Joystiq community together, and right now you are our fat man sliding down our chimney.
Wait, that came out wrong.
JACK @ Nov 5th 2009 2:41AM
alright, alright nothing to see here folks just another 12 yr old Xbox fanboy here. He doesn't even work for his things, I mean who even thinks about selling an object that a loved one gives you? That's just screams, "UNGRATEFUL little BRAT". I've played GOW the DEMO, yes the DEMO not the game, and yes it is in HD, so whats the problem? By your logic, Halo( the game you decided to use), is just another milked HD game as well, point being that a successful franchise doesn't need to stop making games just because one little brat decided its not so great, and I'll let game sales do the talking when it comes out. Go hug a tree and grow a pair sprinkles, if I can call you that, so GTFO OR STFU.

nimer_55 @ Nov 5th 2009 12:59AM
If the wii hadn't been such a huge hit, alot of people would of got a 360 arcade, and the avreage consumer is not going to upgrade from a 360, to a ps3...
But they get a wii, like it, then want more, and by that time the ps3 299.99, and they need/want a blu-ray player. The big games are starting to roll out, like god of war next year. Or uncharted 2 this year. But imagine if all those sales went to the 360, not many of them would of upgraded, but this analyst is saying that sony now has a chance to convince people that the ps3 is right for them. It's alot harder to tell people to get rid of their 360, and live to come the ps3, then to tell them to leave their wii...
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 5th 2009 1:02AM
Why should Sony tell people to get rid of their Xbox 360s?
The RRoD does that for them.

I don't really agree with the analyst though. He says that if the Wii hadn't been so popular, that the console war would go to the X360, which is probably true considering it's starting price. He seems to ignore the fact that all those Wii owners (who didn't buy a Wii because it doesn't exist in this scenario) might buy a PS3.
While I think Microsoft would certainly rocket to 1st place, I do think that Sony would have gotten more sales in such a scenario than they do now (with the Wii actually existing).
That of course assumes that Nintendo would either not make a console, or make a 3rd place console. If they had just done like previous years and only really improve the hardware, I think more third parties would have had games on the Wii, but I don't really see it standing out as much as the PS3 or X360 given their online features that Nintendo didn't seem as interested in. (I say this since even the Gamecube had shoddy online compared to the PS2, despite neither having an out of the box solution).
Draco @ Nov 5th 2009 10:11AM
Yeah but Sonic your forgetting one thing.
If the PS3 was getting killed 2 to 1 by the Xbox then developpers would stop making games for PS3 and the variance would grow. By the end of the life cycle it would be 4:1 and Sony would be pressured to drop out of the games division.
Look at it this way.
Say right now:
Sony sold 10 Million
Microsoft 12 Million
Devs spend about the same amount on both systems. BUT if
Sony sold 15 Million
Microsoft 30 Million
Devs would spend double on the Xbox and Sony would start to lose devs. Sure they sold more then now but if you can make double the cash on the xbox you would be foolish to work on the Playstation.
