I don't think it's a matter of "accepting second place" as it is that there is no hope to reach first place, by either Microsoft or Sony.

Natal may sound cool on paper, but it's gotta be proven before you can call it a success.

Bungie wnats Halo to have nothing to do with it. Didn't Clifford say he wanted nothing to do with it?

All that remains for MS to use it for is Fable, and shovelware.

I'm not saying it won't have an impact, it's a very creative idea. But uh, I don't really consider the MLG guys to be active enough to get up and move round :P

Just because others wanna argue with me, or flame me- doesn't mean there's no intelligent debate to be had.

So, give up if you want- but I figured you might have something worth pointing out to me. Besides the fact that I'm a Sony fanboy, in the Sony section...

Last place in terms of sales? Or games?

They're making their way through sales as we speak.

2009 was all PS3. Killzone2, Infamous, Uncharted 2.

Lookit what they got next year. God of War is going to rape every bodies face. Heavy Rain is going to set new graphical and single player standards. MAG is going to add another top-notch FPS to the line up.

The only awards 360 can achieve this year is 360 GOTY(all it had was ODST), and Arcade GOTY(Shadow Complex was the shiiizzzznit).

alright, alright nothing to see here folks just another 12 yr old Xbox fanboy here. He doesn't even work for his things, I mean who even thinks about selling an object that a loved one gives you? That's just screams, "UNGRATEFUL little BRAT". I've played GOW the DEMO, yes the DEMO not the game, and yes it is in HD, so whats the problem? By your logic, Halo( the game you decided to use), is just another milked HD game as well, point being that a successful franchise doesn't need to stop making games just because one little brat decided its not so great, and I'll let game sales do the talking when it comes out. Go hug a tree and grow a pair sprinkles, if I can call you that, so GTFO OR STFU.

If the wii hadn't been such a huge hit, alot of people would of got a 360 arcade, and the avreage consumer is not going to upgrade from a 360, to a ps3...

But they get a wii, like it, then want more, and by that time the ps3 299.99, and they need/want a blu-ray player. The big games are starting to roll out, like god of war next year. Or uncharted 2 this year. But imagine if all those sales went to the 360, not many of them would of upgraded, but this analyst is saying that sony now has a chance to convince people that the ps3 is right for them. It's alot harder to tell people to get rid of their 360, and live to come the ps3, then to tell them to leave their wii...

I don't really agree with the analyst though. He says that if the Wii hadn't been so popular, that the console war would go to the X360, which is probably true considering it's starting price. He seems to ignore the fact that all those Wii owners (who didn't buy a Wii because it doesn't exist in this scenario) might buy a PS3.

While I think Microsoft would certainly rocket to 1st place, I do think that Sony would have gotten more sales in such a scenario than they do now (with the Wii actually existing).

That of course assumes that Nintendo would either not make a console, or make a 3rd place console. If they had just done like previous years and only really improve the hardware, I think more third parties would have had games on the Wii, but I don't really see it standing out as much as the PS3 or X360 given their online features that Nintendo didn't seem as interested in. (I say this since even the Gamecube had shoddy online compared to the PS2, despite neither having an out of the box solution).

Yeah but Sonic your forgetting one thing.

If the PS3 was getting killed 2 to 1 by the Xbox then developpers would stop making games for PS3 and the variance would grow. By the end of the life cycle it would be 4:1 and Sony would be pressured to drop out of the games division.

Look at it this way.

Say right now:
Sony sold 10 Million
Microsoft 12 Million
Devs spend about the same amount on both systems. BUT if
Sony sold 15 Million
Microsoft 30 Million
Devs would spend double on the Xbox and Sony would start to lose devs. Sure they sold more then now but if you can make double the cash on the xbox you would be foolish to work on the Playstation.

Draco, that's pretty much how it's been between the PS3 and 360 this gen. Microsoft took an early lead and Sony is still a little ways behind. We're still seeing great mutliplatform games for both systems. Hell, even plenty of Wii games are made/going to be made for the PS3 and 360, especially with the new motion controllers.

It's not so much if one console doubles the sales of another, but really how much each console sells that matters. If a console sells 15m while another has already sold 30m, you'd be crazy not to spend a few extra thousand dollars to port your game to the lesser selling console. Even if expected sales are low (say 600k first month, 25k for the next 8-12 months) that would still be pretty profitable for the studio.

We're all hoping the PS2 gets put down sometime soon.

Then all you fools who waited to buy a BC-less PS3 will finally get the firmware to play/download PS2 games from PSN.

I've got a BC 80GB Black Beauty, but I'd definitely like to see the PS2 selection PSN could offer.

Hey guess what I have a 80 GB BC PS3 and you know what I can't even enjoy Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal without having that shit lag every second and to have a shitty frame rate when more than 2 enemies appear which is 99.9% of the game. So fuck half done BC and just get a PS2 best $100 to spend.

I really wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 ended up beating the 360 in the long run. It's new 299 price, plus the popularity of blu-ray on the rise and dominance of the 360 in the Japanese market will probably put it on top.

Customers may be loyal, but only to a certain point. Almost everyone that I know that had a PS2 has upgraded to the 360 up until now because the PS3's price was too high to even consider. I'm sure a lot more PS2 owners that haven't upgraded yet will be switching to the PS3 now because of the price drop...

And to add. ps2 burned A LOT of people. Im amazed at all the RROD bitching but everyone has amnesia to the "disc read error" thing ps2 had. large or slim they both did it . everyone i know and run into has had this. the only difference was that with a lil know how this was fixable.....point is, sony NEVER stepped in and said or admitted to this being a problem and thus never fixed anyones for free outside of the 90 day warranty. and even ps1 has its problems where it had to be turned sideways or upside down to play it.

"Now is the time for Sony to shine ... or else."

Or else what?? Wasn't Nintendo in '3rd place' last gen? Just because a console sells less than other doesn't mean much of anything. Sega was an entirely different beast. They wasted TONS of money on researching/developing complete failures like the SegaCD and 32x... THAT is what sunk Sega.

Yup and I guess the same applies to the Xbox and Gamecube last gen since the PS2 lead in sales. Or maybe I misunderstood a bit but yeah that's the truth . Like you said sales mean crap, just like the most powerful console means crap as well . We all know the PS2 was the least powerful of the three, and yet it out sold all, and is STILL is selling pretty good...

The difference is that, given Sony's selling model, they need to have a high install base to reach profitability, razors and blades and whatnot

Nintendo is the only company who can ride any place profitably, while Microsoft equally is going to lose money wherever they go, but Sony needs to sell a lot of consoles to recoup those console losses

Though they claim that the platform will overall be profitable in 2010. So who knows

Well, for starters, Nintendo started off selling consoles @profit opposed to Sony's consoles selling @a loss. Second, Nintendo has made a profit since the beginning and NEVER at a loss. 3rd place or not, Nintendo's not losing any money opposed to Sony's 4.7 billion dollar loss or even Microsoft's original Xbox loss of profit.
