At the annual SEMA car show in Las Vegas this week, Gran Turismo 5 creative lead Kazunori Yamauchi was on-hand demoing his game for showgoers and talking to the press. Amidst a torrent of questions from Autoweek, Yamauchi roughly calculated the cost of creating Gran Turismo 5: a cool $60 million. That's what five years of development on a single game has cost Polyphony Digital thus far, an amount Yamauchi says was totally justified in order to "get it right."
"We threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch ... It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4." And rather than dodging the reasoning behind the lack of a solid GT5 release date anywhere outside of Japan, Yamauchi flatly offered, "That's more depending on SCEA marketing decisions." Allow us to venture a guess – first half of 2010, perhaps?

I'm pretty damn sure if they had released 3 GTs like they made 3 Forzas in the interims the product that would be released right now would have cost less, have been better, and more positively received

If you really want to count how long they've been working on the PS3 version it's been 3 from when they first got the development kit. The 2 additional years must've came from having the PS2 (early PS3) version near complete and scrapping the whole project.

how do you know what would have turned out better? and how do you know how this was received, since it's not even out yet?
honestly- if you count the sales of GT5:Prologue, it probably diffuses the cost quite a bit. since it's one of the best selling games on the PS3 so far- i have a feeling it's made at least $30 million in sales. when this game comes out, it will also be received by a much larger PS3 install base than what Prologue had at the time of it's release, as well. i wouldn't worry about Polyphony, or the gaming world's reception of the game.

Ouch. Well, they can make that back after selling ~ two million copies of the game. And I'm sure it will sell much more than that.

My understanding is that the first GT toke one person one day to model a car, GT4 took one person one month, GT5 took one person 6 months to model each car. How many cars in GT5? After 5 years of development you can bet this game will wipe the floor with forza and will be the best selling games one the PS3.
This game will appeal to a mass market not just gamers but also to car lovers.

Perfection takes time and costs money. You would think all those losers with crappy rushed out and unreliable Xboxes would have understood that concept by now.

The only thing keeping me from a projector is that I'm worried it'll look washed out unless I'm in a pitch black room. I've got a 57" HD rear projection and it doesn't hold a candle to my 46" LCD. It's just not as clear and the colors aren't as defined on the projection.

there is room for 2 VERY different racers with VERY different feels.
I am enjoying the hell out of forza3. It's an absolute blast to play and customize and sell and trade cars and paint and everything
GT5 will be amazing in a completely different way and I know that I will enjoy the hell out of that as well
(with my new fanatec wheel awww yea)

Yeah that and watch Blu-Rays. Uncharted 2 never looked better. The only downside is you have to change the bulb every 1-3 years depending on how much you use it and that if you don't have a surround sound you'll need to purchase one. It sounds bad but for you to a anything near that size on an HDTV is a lot more expensive and the image quality is nowhere near as good.
There's just too many benefits of owning a projector to an HDTV. At first it could be intimidating but after you get one in your possession those fears quickly fade. I've never ran into a projector owner that's regret the purchase or wanted to get an HDTV over it.

Sorry I forgot to put this...
$1,500 can get you
50" on a HDTV
100"+ on a Projector
I think it's pretty obvious which one saves you money in the end...

Nah I really game on a projector, it's real easy to do I'm honestly surprised more gamers don't do it. After I got a projector about 1/2 my friends went out and bought their own and if your looking for an HDTV or know someone that is I'd really consider that option.

Ok, Gran Turismo 5 cost $60 million to develop. How much for Call of duty: Modern Warfare 2?
I'm guessing GT5 is more expensive, right?

It is but if you look at the time they started developing the game it was around the transition from PS2 to PS3. Instead of giving us what they felt to be a gimp version of the game they cut and started all over.
Even if you feel mad at them for doing that you have to respect them because few developers do that today. Half the time they'll rush a half ass product and update it with DLC they originally planned to be in the game.

Since this isn't an isolated incident I think a lot of this money could have been saved from better project management. They always go over budget on their GTs and they are always delayed quite a bit for the sake of quality. While I'm sure that's 70% true a lot of it is coming from poor management decisions.
Still, if the job gets done well and they make a profit, it doesn't matter, really.

60 million is a lot for development. At that cost, you would have to sell well over a million copies just to break even. You're talking Triple AAA only territory here. But then again, Gran Turismo 4 sold something like 10,000,000 copies, while Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was the neighborhood of 3,000,000 copies. I would suspect they'll make a profit.
Hard to say what the budget of a third party Triple AAA title might be. There's multi platform considerations, but all told-- across all platforms, COD4 Modern Warfare sold more than Gran Turismo 4.

I never said they wouldn't pay it off. :/ Before they sell any copies of the game, they're starting off with $60 million in debt. Fact.

Well they're probably being funded by Sony (their publisher). 60 million/40 = 1.5 million, which is about the number of copies they need to sell to pay for the game. I'd say I'm sure they will, but personally, I really have no frame of reference to base that on.

I bought a PS3 to play Tekken 6, Final Fantasy XIII, DMC4, and MGS4.
3 of which are now on 360. Oh well, at least there are tons more that I didn't know about when I got it.

FFVII cost between 30 and 45 million to make. I thought it was only 15 but internet numbers seem to point elsewhere. If inflation wasn't accounted for in those numbers then by today it'd be around 60 million. So yeah, this is average for company saving game series budget it seems.
