A year ago, the following sentence would have been absolutely, totally, and in all other ways inconceivable: The Blu-ray edition of the Halo Legends anime project is scheduled for release on February 9, 2010. The impossible union of Halo and Blu-ray will not only arrive on the same day as the DVD release, but it will also contain an exclusive overview of the series through the events of Halo 3. As Blu-ray.com risibly puts it, "Soon you'll be able to play Halo on your PS3."
Now, we'd like to think that this generation of consoles is far enough along that this news won't ruffle any fanboy feathers. Then again, we'd also like to think that HD DVD, in all its awesomeness, is poised for a comeback. Just remember, Halo fans, Blu-ray discs are not your enemy. Cliffhangers are.

And why would I get the Blu-ray when I can download it on Xbox Live?

Yes, but the DVD version, because of the lack of space, will have a lower bitrate.
Meaning, for the highest quality Halo, you have to use the Blu-Ray. Meaning the highest quality Halo can only be seen on the competitor's console.
The irony is poignant.

I'm willing to bet that you will be able to download them to a 360 in the long-run, but in the extremely short-run (pre-Feb 10), you'll be able to watch them on Waypoint for free, with the first episode "airing" this Saturday. I'm pretty sure all the big time Halo fans will watch them first that way, and from what I can tell, they look to be pretty smooth (judging by the preview), though I imagine lower resolutions are probably much more forgiving to animations, so my eyes might just be deceiving me.
So in summary, the Xbox is getting preferential treatment in this situation, and the 'Stiq conveniently left that out so everyone'd argue down here in the comments.

Is the Halo anime going to be as boring as the games?

The Halo 3 extra DVD's were pretty good. Especially the Remastered Cutscenes with Developer Commentary in the Legendary Edition.

Actually, it makes sense...
What better way to get a PS3 owner interested in the 360?

Um no it wasnt. The ps2 was just as good as a dvd player you would buy for 200$ and as for the PS3 blu ray its one of the best and yes you can even look it up its faster.

If they had any sense of compassion, they would release this on HD DVD at least - forget all the console wars, you have to feel sorry for those people who bought the HD DVD drive for $200 or something.

Still not worth buying a blu-ray player for.
Come to think of it, Halo isn't worth buying anything for.

Once the Uncharted movie is made available on the Xbox360 through NetFlix, karma will even out.
