iPhone plays Doom, but what about Doom 3?

id Software's John Carmack estimates that the iPhone version of iconic first-person shooter Doom took "maybe six weeks of serious work" to come together. Borrowing time -- and an artist -- the prolific programmer managed to assemble a port that, according to a recent VentureBeat interview, "plays great on every iPod Touch and iPhone ever made." But what if he focused effort on the iPhone 3GS, the latest and more powerful variant of Apple's killer app-platform?

"I think we could do the real Xbox Doom 3 game on a 3GS if we targeted it exclusively," Carmack notes. "That is pushing it a bit. You could probably get that kind of visual fidelity." And here we thought portable devices were only good for recording spooky audio logs and unlocking doors within exploding barrel research laboratories.

I hate to seem like too much of a pessimist, but I'll believe it when I see it, and I don't think I'll ever see it.

I utterly, and completely agree. No way a portable version of Diablo will match the console version.

I'd say this is 4-5 yrs away once the older iPhone 3G is completely phased out. However if they target 'core gamers with the 3G, I'm sure it'd convince some people to upgrade to the 3GS...

Everyone else is making apps incompatible with the first gen Touch already, so the first gen iPhone isn't far behind.

Well, the iPhone 3GS does have a better CPU and more RAM than the Xbox. Maybe it's possible in some form.

Technically this is true but the cpu of the 3GS is underclocked so the xbox is still higher.

Yes. Especially since it's OS isn't a resource hog.

I'm actually not sure the PSP is stronger than the 3GS. Anyone willing to put together a comparison? I'm too lazy to look it up.

Actually Apple outlined back when the iPhone was launched, how the biggest businesses/industries in the world were TV, Computers and Cell Phones.

The Video Game industry is small potatoes. Its a joke. That's why Apple's not interested.

Interestingly enough, they are capturing a big chunk of that small market via OS X iPhone

That article is full of errors and assumptions. Read some the comments on it.

Carmack is that loud smelly uncle at family getogethers: he talks a lot with little to show and thinks that he is still as relevant as he once was.

It takes more than processing power to make a good game, i would think a person who frequented this blog would know that. Anyway.... it will suck, good luck playing a fps with no buttons!
