And yet some are happy at milking a franchise over and over and over again.

Hmm, I feel like we need to hear from the Industry Master, Bobby Kotick, before coming to a REASONABLE, BALANCED, and FAIR opinion on original IPs. I feel like Mr. Kotick has a great vision for the industry and an OPEN-MINDED approach to new and existing IPs.

most of the stuff that i'm playing now are sequels. not that i seek that out, but most of the games that are being released are sequels. dead space is probably one of the strongest new IPs from recent that i can think of.

Everyone agrees, except gamers :/

and publishers and/or their marketing groups.

At least that's what the trend has been 95% of the time for the last 15 years.

They talk up new IPs, then either
A) Don't advertise them
B) Advertise them poorly
C) Show absolutely no faith in them

and then gamers either
A) Do not buy them
B) Don't know they exist
C) A small few buy them, then make fun of A and B for being "Sheep".

To be fair, all the final fantasy games in the main series are on different engines and designed totally different, they may as well be a new IP.

I second this entirely. It's all labeled Final Fantasy, but it's entire new cast of characters, world, engines, etc. Might as well be a different RPG each time. Original IP yes, original genre no.

I think it's time for people to grow up and realize that an unoriginal FPS is not the only game you must play (who would want to play those anyway?), and that there are more creative titles just waiting for you out there. It's ridiculous at how much MILKING is done with a genre or franchise, and how the industry is lacking in imagination. Luckily, we have creative companies that want to go out of the box with what they develop, and I respect those developers. But unfortunately, we have society glorifying these tired and regurgitated games, when they could be praising amazing titles like Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, an Assassin's Creed game, or Bioshock. Now, I don't want to go into stereotypes, but one of the culprits in supporting these games are largely teenagers. Ever been on Xbox Live lately? I was online with one the other day. I was explaining to him that how I don't particularly enjoy COD games, and that I'd much rather prefer something like Assassin's Creed II. Of course, being the idiotic person he was, he thought that I was stupid for not liking COD, and I seriously shook my head in disgust. I know that not all teenagers are like this, there are some intelligent kids out there, but I think that many of them should be seen as infamous for supporting these franchises. I'm sick and tired of hearing "Latest News: New FPS being developed by..." Absolutely tired of it. Developers need to realize, as the article said, that true gamers desire something totally out of this world and totally new. It's those kinds of things that make gaming so awesome.

As pointed out in an earlier post, a big problem with this, and in the past, is that those games just aren't advertised well. For example: Okami.

Unless you viewed gaming websites, gaming forums, or whatever. You didn't even know the game existed. It was not advertised.

Gamers aren't the only ones to blame here. A lot of people simply don't know games are out there except the big games, because that's all they see.

Companies aren't willing to put faith into anything but magic money buckets.

It's not that all FPS's are bad; its that the genre is abused.

I had to do a count. Fifteen of my current-gen games are some kind of shooter (This includes Mass Effect, Valkyria Chronicles...even though they're probably not), while twenty were some other kind of game.

I will agree that the majority of teenagers think that shooters are the only games worth playing, to their detriment.

I typically don't bother reading a brick like that, but I did on this occasion. It's comical that you reference two games that specifically ARE being regurgitated. However, when a game is flat our awesome, I don't see the foul in it being regurgitated. On that note, I can't wait for Fable III as Fable II is one of my fave games of all time. As is Mass Effect.

I'm all for new IP though. Oh god, random thought, can they regurgitate Pikmin for godssakes!? What a fucking awesome game(s) those have been.
