I actually agree. Look back to the days when video games were finding it's roots (I.E NES/SNES) %90 of games were new IPs. Why can't we do that now? It's because kids these days only support shooters. A friend of mine has never played and refuses to try any game other than FPS and generic action game like Dynasty Warriors, he got his PS3 stolen yesterday and I laughed my ass off.

My favorite games this gen are, Mirror's Edge, Uncharted 2, MGS4, Bioshock, Flower, LittleBigPlanet, and Assassin's creed. All but two are original IPs.

P.S. Paragraphs are your friend

@ Darth

Exactly, that's what I was trying to say. Thanks for clarifying my point. But yeah, I totally agree with you.

While I can't stand Call of Duty, I love me some Halo. I'm 18 so, sure, I'll be the sheep that knows nothing about gaming, and you can be the guy that knows everything and will hate on everything that is popular.

I realize Halo is nothing extraordinary from a gameplay perspective, but I'm to the point where I don't even buy them for their INCREDIBLE gameplay rather, I buy them for the story and lore.

I enjoy many of my games today just for the artistic experience, be it story, design, depth, whichever. I play them to relax and unwind into a different, believable world.

Same reason I'll buy Mass Effect 2, TES 5, and Dragon Age 2. Because, along with Halo, those are the only games in my eyes that have anything really fantastic going from a story point of view. That said, I'll definitely be buying any original IPs that come along that intrigue me, much like Dragon Age, Borderlands, Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge, and other non-original games.

I'll have to disagree with the need for original IPs though. Games like Modern Warfare 2, Grand Theft Auto 4, Halo 3, and other behemoth mass-blockbuster titles are what keeps the industry alive, not the little-known gems. When the cliche has been dropped, the thing that matters most is money, and those games make a lot of it.

Mirror's Edge was absolutely incredible, if far too short. I feel like that game deserves a lot more recognition than it gets.

I loved that game, too. I can't believe how people were so divided on it. It seemed like a love it or hate it game for some reason. It was a great starting point for them and could easily be even better with a sequel.

No... We don't necessarily need a ton of new IPs for the sake of having new IPs. We need our current IPs to stop trying to appeal to everyone instead of making a great game that appeals heavily to one crowd.

meanwhile, EA is hard at work on the bad story to be implemented in the next need for speed game. Also they are studying rendering techniques Nintendo used on N64 titles for use in their next casual wii game.

Really? Nintendo's been thriving off Mario and Zelda for 25 years.

I would argue that each Pokémon Generation has substantially more content than the previous one, and that's not what's being milked, but whatever, Pokémon is a culture, not just a brand.

Can't wait to pick up my Pokémon Platinum :D

Mario and Link aren't just Nintendo icons, they're gaming icons and you can't really be suggesting them to not make those games anymore. You have to at least give them props for changing every new game that comes out. It's not the same game with better graphics releasing every year at all. They always introduce something new to each new game in the series.

It's funny because people actually bitch about it when they announce that they're changing things in their beloved mascot games, but they go ahead and do it anyways. Just look at the comments when they recently said that the new Zelda will use motion plus for sword fights...

It's not so much new IPs, as new gameplay content for those IPs, if we consider an IP to be just a name and a set of characters/plot ideas.

If new IPs are what are needed to get new content out there, so be it, but that's not the root of the problem.

People are more comfortable with games that they already know. If they know they will enjoy a shooter, then they will buy shooters. Nothing is worse than playing a new IP and finding out that the $60 you spent is gone to waste. Not everyone searches gaming sites for info.

Most gamers agree, until it comes time to buy said new IP. They go with something familiar instead.

Old IPs have advantages, like gameplay already ironed out and in some cases, a lot of the game engine already created (like Uncharted 2)

Nice stab at Madden. Not called for since Madden is a yearly sports game and has actually tried to introduce a bunch of new things over the years instead of fixing the core game play issues. At least with Madden 10 they tried to address them more so than any year, ever. Stop being such a Madden hater, Joystiq.

Now, of course we definitely need original IPs. It's a no brainer but this needs to be whacked over the head of Japanese devs more than anyone else. They stay stuck in the past and can't seem to use their creative minds to venture outside of the box. That's why Japanese devved games are hurting. Same ole, tired, formulaic games can't really cut it anymore.

Outside of Japanese devs, the industry is good with new, refreshing and original IPs and the future is bright as long as costs don't get out of hand especially in these tough economic times.
