Game Boy inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame

Nintendo's most iconic foray into the handheld gaming market is finally being recognized as "an innovator" that "changed the way people play electronic games" by being inducted into Strong National Museum of Play's Toy Hall of Fame. Among twelve finalists, the Game Boy joins the Big Wheel and the ball to be added to the list of important cultural toys.

Yes, the ball is just now being inducted into the hall of fame, meaning Nintendo's handheld made the cut in two decades, while the ball had been clawing for a spot since the days of Ancient Egypt. In your face, Ozymandias.

It's strange ..why it took the judges only this year 2009 to select game boy as the winner.?

It has been one of the pioneer if not the first and the best handheld portable gaming console way back in 90's.

The awarding of GB should be a no-brainer.

So I went and looked at their website of 44 inducted toys. Among them, and I kid you not, is a stick... A stick... A ball is rather general, but at least it's constructed. But, a STICK?!? Seriously?

Are you serious? when you're a kid, a stick was probably one of the greatest toys of all time. And the best thing of all, it was free!!!

I remember when I got my first Gameboy. My cousin gave me her (at the time) new Gameboy she had for about a year. I remember popping in Tetris, looking at the incredibly green screen and saying, "This is my life now..." I've been hooked on video games since that day.

Actually, seeing how the Atari 2600 also is in the museum, I'm a little surprised that the "stand-up arcade machine" - or even "pinball" - haven't made it in yet, either. After all, they were predecessors to the Atari and the Game Boy too, and helped to lead the way to video games.

Hmm... I don't see "playing cards" on the list, either. Perhaps I need to toss some nominations their way for consideration for next year....
