PSP Go owners make Final Fantasy VII the top PSN seller for October

1. Final Fantasy VII (PS3/PSP)
2. Zombie Apocalypse (PS3)
3. TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled (PS3)
4. .deTuned (PS3)
5. UNO (PS3)
6. Gran Turismo (PSP)
7. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 (PS3)
8. Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest For Booty (PS3)
9. Critter Crunch (PS3)
10. God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP)
Konami's Zombie Apocalypse stood as the top new entry, while interactive art experience .deTuned managed to snag a few purchases from Trophy hunters looking for some of the easiest achievements ever created. Critter Crunch's low sales numbers managed to snag it a 9th position -- which either means sales picked up after the free demo, or October was not a very good month for PSN sales at all.

I bet FFVII looks pretty good on that little screen. FFVIII and IX will look even better.
HollowYoshi @ Nov 6th 2009 7:19AM
I downloaded Final Fantasy VII for my PSP back when it came out and it does look great, I'm definitely looking forward to them releasing VIII and IX, especially since IX had some of the best gameplay. (in my opinion)
Matt @ Nov 6th 2009 10:21AM
I picked up Final Fantasy 7 the second I got my PSP.... 3000. In early October.
It doesn't look bad, it's definately not as painful as playing a PSone game on a TV screen.
Now if only they'd release Final Fantasy 8 in the US already...
acefondu @ Nov 6th 2009 11:16AM
The PC version still looks the best.
phinnvr6 @ Nov 6th 2009 11:25AM
remake remake remake remake remake. Oh well, Demon's Souls pwnz everything now anyway.
Reuben @ Nov 6th 2009 12:00PM
This FF VII, or any other numbered Final Fantasy released on the PSN, is not a remake. They are re-releases. There is a fairly massive difference.
xxhonkeyxx @ Nov 6th 2009 12:07PM
this just goes to show how much people love FFVII
square enix, please listen, you will sell SOOOO many copies if you ported this to the PS3.
you know you want to :)
AtomicPlayboy @ Nov 6th 2009 2:39PM
@acefondu: Actually, the best looking version is the one you can play using the epsxe emulator with all the graphical bells and whistles enabled. If Sony had actually applied some of the PS3's hardware power to apply some of the same enhancements, they'd gladly have my $$$ for this PSN purchase. Instead, I'm still using my old PSX discs and my PC.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Nov 6th 2009 7:32AM
I was very, very disappointed with Zombie Apocalypse. NOT Recommended.
Playing the campaign = playing the same 5 maps over TEN TIMES. :/
It gets boring. And fast. (But gives you easy trophies if you are up for that).
baby sea tuna @ Nov 6th 2009 8:22AM
It's not a bad way to kill a little time with a friend or two though. Probably not worth $10 though, you're right.
Longbottom, Leif @ Nov 6th 2009 9:41AM
I didn't think it was worth $10 until I unlocked 7 Days of Hell. That makes it all worth it.
Joanna D @ Nov 6th 2009 7:36AM
It really is a crying shame when the best selling game on your brand new, really expensive console loaded with tech is a twelve year old direct port.
Joanna D @ Nov 6th 2009 7:36AM
Phil Harrison must be all like ^_^ right now.
koehler83 @ Nov 6th 2009 7:51AM
Yeah, it's a tragedy when a game has staying power of over a decade. It's a god damned travesty.
Or maybe you're just pointlessly bitter.
Orion @ Nov 6th 2009 8:02AM
Thank you for pointing that out. Everyone one of Joanna's posts here, or at TUAW is pointlessly bitter. It gets kinda old, fast.
borland502 (SDF Macross) @ Nov 6th 2009 9:23AM
Of course, you do realize that if FFVII were offered on either the Wii or 360 it would be the top selling downloadable on those platforms too? Love it or hate it, FFVII is iconic and much beloved as a game by others.
Elranzer @ Nov 6th 2009 9:26AM
I'm sure you'll hate me for still playing (and enjoying) Super Mario World after all of these years.
zanmushi @ Nov 6th 2009 9:51AM
May be bitter, yes - but he is right. FF7 rocks, but too bad the psp game selection is lacking or I would have one by now.
Orion @ Nov 6th 2009 9:54AM
Yea.. that's one terrible line-up

F*ck you Joanna D, and your damn Chocobo.
Ghaleon @ Nov 6th 2009 11:01AM
Whether you like FFVII or not isn't the issue -- this is pretty bad news for the Go.
What if the DSi was download only, and Mario 1 beat out ALL the new games available?? That would be retarded and would pretty much say not much on the console's current crop of games is that hot.
Of course this is taking in console sales too though.
zanmushi @ Nov 6th 2009 11:20AM
HEY, someone gets it :)
koehler83 @ Nov 6th 2009 11:31AM
It's $10 and over 100 hours of gameplay! It's a fuckin' good deal! Of course it sells like gangbusters!
You also have somehow neglected the fact that it plays on ALL PSPs and PS3.
That's not a list of "PSPgo downloads" people....
Traceur_Ryuk [Founder of The Anti-EMCB(tm) and co-leader of ATDF] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Nov 6th 2009 1:19PM
How can you say because FF VII is on top that there isn't a good selection of PSP games? That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, this is the first time it is able to be portable and it's a terrific game. If you're gonna say that you might as well say there is absolutely no games on PSN, fuckin idiots.
WREturns [Planeteer I Power of The Final Countdown] @ Nov 6th 2009 7:37AM
I will buy FF VIII when it is released. That is all.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 6th 2009 8:18AM
Yuck, really?
acefondu @ Nov 6th 2009 9:33AM
VIII's story blew, but the battle system was pretty awesome. Very much enjoyed the level of customization in that game.
Reuben @ Nov 6th 2009 12:30PM
FF VIII is my favorite one in the series, even though the story near the end got a little too far-out.
skyzbig @ Nov 6th 2009 8:06AM
To be fair, GT PSP is on UMD.
Phil @ Nov 6th 2009 10:23AM
Yeah, but it is also available for download via PSN. That's why it qualifies to be on this list.
I think if they had taken that into account it would have been a top seller overall for the platform.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 6th 2009 8:20AM
It's a shame that GoW:Chains ranked so low since it's like the best PSP game. I guess if the Go sold well to people who didn't already own a regular PSP (and, most likely, Chains) more people would have bought it.
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Nov 6th 2009 8:24AM
God of war doesnt suit everyone (especially females) nor is it long or story orientated, nor does it have a series of intense follow ups and a prequel, nor does it have as massive a fanbase, nor has it won numerous awards for story telling and nor does it have anything other then hack and slash.
You can kind of see why FF7 does better, not to mention FF7 is cheaper
baby sea tuna @ Nov 6th 2009 8:37AM
Yeah, FF is cheaper, but it is by no means "bite-sized" enough to really work on a handheld. Considering it took me about 80 hours to beat the first time around on my TV, that would probably translate to 11.3 months in handheld time (unless you commute daily by train or something.) Chains is something that you can beat on a vacation, and therefore a much more logical choice for a handheld game. Then again, it may just be me, since I bailed on the DS versions of both Chrono Trigger and The World Ends With You because they were just too fucking long to play on a tiny travel screen.
Orion @ Nov 6th 2009 9:14AM
I owned GoW on my PSP 2000, but didn't find much replay value in it. When I got my Go, I didn't re-buy it like a couple other games. Don't get me wrong, it's a good game.. but I just didn't see a need to buy it again as I didn't feel like playing it through again.
Maybe that had something to do with it.
acefondu @ Nov 6th 2009 9:35AM
I beat God of War on the PSP .... 7 times? Love that game. Did all the challenges and beat it on the hardest difficulty. PSP needs some Devil May Cry love though.
Space @ Nov 6th 2009 9:42AM
hold up maverick, Gow of War CoO is a prequel that followed two amazing, highly played games. Two games that were probably the most popular games on the most popular system ever. Do you not see the anticipation for GoW3? And to attack the story telling...have you even played them. The story telling is the most bad ass part of the game! sure it's not going to win any awards but I'll be damned if it's not cool and entertaining! Those cutscenes in the first one were incredibly stylized.
if god of war is nothing but hack n slash than FFVII is nothing but going through menus.
the only thing I would have mentioned is that FFVII is cheaper and can be played on the PS3 and PSP opposed to GoW, which can on be played on the PSP.
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Nov 6th 2009 8:08PM
"hold up maverick, Gow of War CoO is a prequel that followed two amazing, highly played games. Two games that were probably the most popular games on the most popular system ever."
I know that, I've played every single one of them so far ¬_¬
"Do you not see the anticipation for GoW3?"
Of course I do, I happen to be one of those people you are talking about
"And to attack the story telling...have you even played them. The story telling is the most bad ass part of the game! sure it's not going to win any awards but I'll be damned if it's not cool and entertaining! Those cutscenes in the first one were incredibly stylized."
Who's attacking the story? I compared it to FF7, if I was to compare which game has stuck in my head and influenced my gaming habits and love for writing, FF7 would be it, God of war is good, but even a plank can admit the storyline is nothing more then a very angry man seeking vengence on the gods for not letting him escape the nightmares of killing his family, not exactly the epitome of story telling right there.
"if god of war is nothing but hack n slash than FFVII is nothing but going through menus."
God of war is JUST a hack and slash, which is why I love it, but that is also why it fails to appeal to people who do not like hack and slash, I think you have forgotten, FF7 has defined not only a part of gaming, but also the Playstation as a whole, God of war has defined nothing, but it has taken gaming to a whole new level, and I cannot wait for the third installment, but I can't say it had my emotions going anywhere near what FF7 achieved. To this date, FF7 still has some of the most memorable characters in gaming, GoW only has Kratos, and tbh, there isn't much to remember about Kratos other then his terrible temper tantrum, regardless of what you think of FF7.
sikbeta @ Nov 6th 2009 8:32AM
What happen with GT PSP, I thought was going to be HUGE
Orion @ Nov 6th 2009 9:17AM
It is. It's actually selling very well. But I mean come on... everyone knows FF VII has always had more drive in sales than any GT game.
Also, like stated above, GT was on both UMD and PSN. FF VII is only PSN. So the fact GT is so close in sales to FF VII just on PSN is actually pretty amazing if you think about it.
sikbeta @ Nov 6th 2009 9:30AM
Thnaks for the info, I didn't notice and I still stucked thinking in the promotion of PSPGo + GTpsp from October First XP
GhostofGrendel @ Nov 6th 2009 8:39AM
Any chance this would inspire Sony to remake FFVII for the PS3? The tech demo looked really cool and I would love to play a refreshed version as long as they didn't tamper with the story or battle system at all (wishful thinking?). Materia system was in my opinion one of the most brilliant magic/summoning systems ever put in to a RPG. It basically let you customize each character nearly without boundries. You could grow materia so that each of your players could have the same one even though in the case of the more powerful materia only one existed in the game. Good stuff.
koehler83 @ Nov 6th 2009 8:41AM
Why would Sony remake a Square Enix game?
GhostofGrendel @ Nov 6th 2009 10:04AM
@koehler83
I don't know because Sony was the publisher of the title so they could ask Square Enix to do it or pay them to do it or whatever. But if you really want to be a nit picking prick and troll the boards and point out irrelevant tiny details to make yourself feel like some sort of mental giant even though you knew exactly what i meant then I guess that I should point out to you that you are technically wrong too because Square Enix did not develop the game Square did before they merged with Enix Corporation so you can go back to your pathectic basement dwelling so called life now. Jerk.
Reuben @ Nov 6th 2009 12:47PM
I would love if they did, but I don't think it's ever going to happen. Square Enix has a history of making tech demos for sony systems. I believe there is an old demo for PS2 involving FF VIII characters, and another for the original Playstation.
ElStefio @ Nov 6th 2009 6:39PM
Am I the only person left on Earth who thinks that a FFVII remake is a really bad idea? The game is great as it is - to remake it would be like a "new and improved" version of Star Wars, or a film of HHGTTG... wait, they did that, and it broke my heart.
See the South Park episode "Free Hat" for more insight into why some things should just be left well alone.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 6th 2009 9:03AM
Doesn't everyone own this game yet?
Prof. Von Manifest (aka Dallas McCoy of the Cocaine Imperium) [PSN: Manifest37] @ Nov 6th 2009 10:06AM
No, but it beckons me...
scratch @ Nov 6th 2009 9:17AM
well i (actually my wife) picked up critter crunch after playing the demo, so hopefully others did as well. getting the trine demo now, so may be picking that up next. (indie) devs need to learn, demo = sales (unless your game sucks, and then there's no helping you).
@sikbeta: i would imagine that most of the gt psp sales are on umd, not off PSN. remember most of the installed user base have UMD drives, and GT seems like a game most would tend to buy on UMD (because of it's presumably large size and weighty gameplay).
