They'll make one. Their sales are down, and there's only so much of a boost a color change will get them.

A lot of people DO have HDTV's now... that argument gets older by the minute.

It says in 2007 30% owned them, so maybe 40% now. Is that enough to do it, I don't know.

Yeah but it's not like Wii doesn't offer component cables and 480p support.

People act as if Wii is flat out incompatible with HD sets or something. 2011 isn't that far off. Not a big deal guys.

@Cody, 480p isn't HD, its ED (Enhenced Definition). Therefore Wii isn't capable of HD.

When rumors persist long enough, they usually turn out to be true. But I have no idea how people can believe this one. It just doesn't seem like it would be advantageous to anyone or worth all the logistical issues it would present and the misgivings and confusion customers would have.

if he said it was true no one would buy the current wii. they hold back the truth because of that one reason. i love how nintendo said most people dont have hd tvs when the wii was announced now everyone has one. just like they never included a dvd drive in teh n64. always waiting too long to embrace new technology, and thats why they will never be number 1 for an entire generation. the wii will not last as long as the ps3 or xbox, its already horribly outdated. i mean looking at games like uncharted they are gorgeous, ive seen better looking games on my iphone thant what wii can offer

I don't. My brother doesn't. My wife's best friend doesn't. My co-worker doesn't. I think you mistake yourself (a 'core gamer) for the same way the general public behaves.

Or, perhaps my family and friends are just poor and slow to the game.

So before this generation a lot of "hardcore" gamers and gaming "journalists" were convinced that Nintendo would/should go third party. When Nintendo announced that the revolution would not be HD, this convinced them that Nintendo was doomed for sure.

Now almost 3 years later, the Wii's sales so far have proven that not going HD was the right move, that not going HD took them back to 1st place and people (like patcher and most of the posters at kotaku apparently) think Nintendo should drop whats worked and for the first time ever (as far as I know) be a market leader that cuts the life of the leading console short to emulate the loosing consoles? Is that the deal? I'm really really confused here.

Nintendo's main argument for not going HD in '06 is that there was a low adoption rate of Hi def TVs and only a small percentage of people had them. now the numbers are a lot higher, technology is cheaper, and it would be foolish not to go HD this time.

It would be funny if they pulled like an apple announcement and said "Not only is it real, but it is shipping to stores as we speak and will be available by Christmas".

Not going to happen, but I would be lying if I said I didn't think there was parallels between apple's business model and what Nintendo is doing right now.

There's a few basic things Nintendo has really disappointed me in.

(1) No practical online community
(2) No HD
(3) No Internal HDD
(4) Tons of shovelware
(5) No DVD Movie playback

To me, regardless of the fact that the Wiimote is unique and that they're selling like hotcakes, Nintendo seems to STILL be playing the same game. Offering a trending item that they don't seem to care much about. Where's all the new IP games? Why can't they unite a SOLID online experience? Why isn't their a BLOODY HDD option for the thing? And honestly, how hard is it to come out with an HD Wii, or better yet, WHY is it so damn hard to include DVD Movie playback?

Until they start caring, I'm sticking with my PS3 and 360.

I don't know why I bother explaining this, because I know kids like you are going to keep coming around and completely missing Nintendo's point, but...

"(1) No practical online community"
No mistake about it, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is a flawed system. But that can't be fixed, due to how ingrained into the games themselves it is. And DS and Wii games can't be patched, so we'll have to wait for next generation for this to be resolved.

"(2) No HD"
When Wii came out (and while in development), the HDTV market was very small. They skipped HD to keep costs down and to appeal to the masses. A $400-500 Wii would never sell, but a $250 Wii would. And you can't add that mid-generation, especially if you plan on keep a single-model business plan (and I can't be the only one who hates how many configurations of 360 and PS3 there are). Nintendo's next console will be HD, so I don't even see why, ALMOST THREE YEARS INTO Wii'S LIFESPAN PEOPLE ARE STILL BITCHING ABOUT THIS.

"(3) No Internal HDD"
HDDs die easily. They went with flash memory because of zero moving parts. Granted, 512MB is a piss-tiny amount of memory, but flash memory wasn't AS cheap back then as it is now. And this, again, isn't something that can be added on, due to how Wii's firmware is made and how the games work. For example, any game made before Wii supported SDHC (Smash Bros. Animal Crossing, Excite Truck, etc.) won't be able to use SDHC cards because they weren't programmed to support it.

"(4) Tons of shovelware"
How is that Nintendo's fault? Blame the third-parties who don't take the system seriously. And DON'T EVEN mention the "Nintendo Seal of Quality." It never meant what you think it does. All it meant was a product was licensed by Nintendo, and wouldn't make your system explode.

"(5) No DVD Movie playback"
Who doesn't already have 10 different DVD players in their house? Is this seriously a big deal? You can play DVDs on PCs, 360s, PS3s, Xboxes, PS2s, standalone DVD players, TVs with built-in DVD players, portable DVD players, refrigerators... etc. If you REALLY want DVD movie playback on Wii, there's a homebrew solution for that.

You make a good point and I follow everything you're saying, but your first sentence:

"I don't know why I bother explaining this, because I know kids like you are going to keep coming around and completely missing Nintendo's point, but...,"

it really makes me think you can't have and "adult" argument when you talk to others like that. Regardless, I'm the type of consumer who likes the "all-in-one" products, and PERSONALLY, I feel that Nintendo doesn't offer this, and thus, was a "miss" for me. That's my opinion though. I understand other people have their own views on the matter, but this is my opinion. I guess in your words, it's Nintendo's "point" that I'm not happy with. They seem to not care about anything other than quick money (I know the other companies are the same) and honestly, not much can be said about Nintendo. What HUGE pushes and innovations have they accomplished in the last 3 years with their hardware and software other than wiimotion plus, wiifit, and remakes of Mario? It just seems like the same old Nintendo, but with a trendy item that collects dust 6 months after people buy it.

Had Nintendo released a Wii with horsepower on par with 360 and PS3, it'd cost as much as them. And probably would've bombed harder than GameCube did. Trying to make a graphical powerhouse AND an experimental input method at the same time? Who would honestly buy that? So, they tried to innovate in a way other than just beefier specs.

Saying all they care is to make a quick buck is stupid. EVERY company wants to make a quick buck. To say that's all they care about reiterates that you're missing what Nintendo's plan for the Wii was. Nintendo wanted to reinvent the interface, so that's where they put their R&D into. They wanted to reach out to those who hadn't played games since the Atari and NES days, so they kep it cheap. It has been hit or miss along the way, yes, but they were the first to take this path (for a mainstream console, anyways), and see how Microsoft and Sony have followed suit.

Nintendo isn't one to typically follow the beaten path others have taken. Look at their hardware history. Where others moved zig, they moved zag. Sometimes it works out for them, and sometimes it doesn't. Why would they make a video game system that doubles as a media center? The others are doing that already! Why should they bother?

So what if it isn't some media center monster with an amazing online system. It still has a great library of games (despite what the trolls may tell you).

I don't know Reggi from Adam but I have to say every time I see him (or actually most Nintendo reps) he just seems to come off kinda like a d-bag. There's this sort of holier then thou attitude they exude like "We know what's right for the gaming public and you can just suck it." That seems to be floudering given their recent market loss, there have been some rather short sighted decisions by Nintendo regarding digital distribution and content but hey, their call. I'm not saying Reggie or the folks at Nintendo are D-bags, or that they don't give a damn about anything but quick profit but if it sounds like a feminine hygine product and it smells like a feminine hygine product it's probably a feminine hygine product.

I'm curious as to what genre of games you're interested in, since there were great games every year for the Wii.

Comments like "I haven't touched my Wii in years" is almost the same as "The DS has no games I'm interested in" as both seem to have lost their audiences for the sole purpose of lack of (great) FPS games.

When people list what they play on other consoles compared to the Wii, it looks almost like the same list of what they play on their PSP instead of the DS:
Seeing that there's a large amount of FPS and TPS games on both lists.

Well, I bought SM Galaxy, then got a 360 that christmas and haven't bought a Wii game since.

I know there are games that I would probably like, I just like the 360 so much I don't give the Wii any love. I've played Brawl, Kart and Resort at friends and liked them, but not enough to run out and buy.

I was a Cube-only gamer last gen, and I used to hate the fact that every month EGM had killer games that were ps2/xb only. I felt the same thing happening with the Wii so I jumped ship. I still have the console, but I fell out of love. Sorry Nintendo, it's not you it's me.
