Rock Band Weekly: The White Stripes, The Damned, Kasabian
.
Forget that Jack White finds it "depressing" that kids are learning about music through rhythm games -- there's gold in them thar virtual hills! Next week's Rock Band DLC adds a pack of songs from The White Stripes, with tracks off of three different albums.
We've also added this little guy to Rock Band Weekly:
. He indicates tracks that are considered "family-friendly" enough for Lego Rock Band. Such marked songs will be available in LRB's music store, as well as appearing in the regular Rock Band music store. [Thanks to our friend Dustin Burg for the Lego head!]Check out the update after the break, along with what Rock Band Unplugged players can expect for DLC next week.

Icky Thump!
Bagels (@AlsoBagels) @ Nov 6th 2009 1:21PM
I'm guessing certain portions of the song exclude it from LEGO Rock Band. I mean, you can't be the brick and the brick placing stud too.
VaultBoy @ Nov 6th 2009 11:28PM
Would have preferred Seven "Nation Army", or "Fell In Love With a Girl", but "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground", and "Icky Thump" are good too.
VaultBoy @ Nov 6th 2009 11:29PM
"Seven Nation Army". Punctuation FAIL...
Martin @ Nov 6th 2009 11:34AM
First week in a long while that I don't recognize any of the songs. Music discovery FTW.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Nov 6th 2009 11:39AM
Come on. The White Stripes and NOT Seven Nation Army?
Sometimes I find the song choices confusing. :(
This said, picking the pack up day one.
Petebot330 @ Nov 6th 2009 12:38PM
Girl, you have no faith in medicine is AWESOME tho.
charlie b. @ Nov 6th 2009 5:16PM
ACETAMINOPHEN!
YOU SEE THE MEDICINE!
OH GIRL!
Filthy Assistant @ Nov 6th 2009 7:52PM
They're probably holding it for later, along with Fell In Love With A Girl.
Still, this is fine. All the songs are great and it's about time the White Stripes in Rock Band, they've probably been mine (and I would wager many other people's) most-wanted band in the game.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Nov 6th 2009 11:41AM
But I don't wanna...
LeadBoxx @ Nov 6th 2009 11:42AM
I am sick of musicians talking smack on rhythm games. If it wasn't for these games, then some of these kids (or adults) might have not ever even heard some of this music. Who cares how someone discovers music? THEY ARE DISCOVERING MUSIC AND HAVING FUN WITH FRIENDS WHILE DOING IT! STFU!
Jason Axelrod @ Nov 6th 2009 12:26PM
Completely agree. People knock on Harry Potter for the same reason. However, if it wasn't for HP, so many children wouldn't be reading books at all.
Petebot330 @ Nov 6th 2009 12:40PM
I still maintain that Jack White was lamenting the fact that this is one of the ONLY ways kids can learn about music because of the insular, hit driven focus of radio and the non-existence of music video channels that play music videos. Even internet radio is fighting an uphill battle against the labels.
CyberKnight @ Nov 6th 2009 1:28PM
Following the links back to the original quote, I have to agree with Petebot330:
----
"It's depressing to have a label come and tell you that ['Guitar Hero'] is how kids are learning about music and experiencing music," White said. He added that although he doesn't try to dictate "which format people should get their music in…if you have to be in a video game to get in front of them, that's a little sad."
----
Rather than saying it's not an *acceptable* channel, he just doesn't seem to think these games are the *ideal* way to release new music (although I'm not sure I agree, and the new Rock Band studio thing should further test that theory) -- or, at least, shouldn't be the *only* way (as Petebot330 said).
LeadBoxx @ Nov 6th 2009 2:31PM
I say that it's no big deal and he should still quit whining (I love him as an artist BTW). Sometime before music was so readily available, someone wouldn't hear about a particular artist or a song unless they saw a certain movie or TV show. Still, the outlet for that music or art was another piece of art. This all boils down to what people consider art, and I think the world needs to understand that video games are an art form. Sure it's technology driven, but that's the nature of evolution for us humans. I feel it's like someone saying black and white movies are better than ones in color. Just accept it and move on and allow us to progress without any guilt you self-righteous MOFOS!
Filthy Assistant @ Nov 6th 2009 7:54PM
If you read the quote, he actually seems to be saying it's depressing that the other forms of media are failing so badly at introducing good new music, that kids have to learn from Guitar Hero. I'll admit, I learned about a lot of bands from Guitar Hero, because where else are you going to hear them? Sure as hell not MTV, or VH1, or top 40 radio.
At least, that's how I interpreted his comment. He obviously doesn't actually have anything against Guitar Hero/Rock Band since his songs (from the Raconteurs) have been in both.
pete @ Nov 6th 2009 11:03PM
Even though it sounds as if he is depressed that other forms of media are failing, it doesn't make up for the fact that he finds videogames an inadequate way to discover music-- that kids "have to" use videogames to find music.
If you can't understand the impact and influence of videogames as an art form and a form of mass communication than you are no better than the people who thought music videos were the downfall of music.
DarkLN1X @ Nov 6th 2009 11:46AM
OMG Kasabian , incredible!!!! more please!
Kelly @ Nov 6th 2009 1:37PM
Yea, they released shoot the runner a year ago...and now they've got club foot, they should really release more off of kasabians self titled, its a pretty great album.
Torque_AOD @ Nov 6th 2009 11:49AM
No Seven Nation Army???
HMX
I AM DISAPPOINT.....
charlie b. @ Nov 6th 2009 12:58PM
that's a great song, to be sure. but it would not be the most fun Rock Band song to play.
great kick drum practice, though.
MystileArmor @ Nov 6th 2009 11:51AM
Kasabian, that's what I like to see. Now some more Stone Roses, Arctic Monkeys and some Verve and some of the good old Oasis stuff, and I'm all set.
DarkLN1X @ Nov 6th 2009 11:52AM
That would be a Rithm Orgasm
Ilunc @ Nov 6th 2009 11:58AM
I want some more radiohead and R.E.M.
Please!

Nicholas Muldoon @ Nov 6th 2009 1:46PM
Totally agree, give me really any Arctic Monkeys full album and I'd be fine and The Stone Roses debut and Fools Gold, Also would like some more Blur and maybe some Bloc Party too would be nice.
Sora @ Nov 6th 2009 5:34PM
I love your taste.
MystileArmor @ Nov 6th 2009 11:02PM
I love my taste too.
HazyCloud @ Nov 6th 2009 11:58AM
I told [-]. Does that count?
GewurztraminerX @ Nov 6th 2009 12:09PM
You can play music by a group called The Damned on LRB?
baby sea tuna @ Nov 6th 2009 12:29PM
Maybe they changed it to "The Darned."
Petebot330 @ Nov 6th 2009 12:41PM
Well its the old school definition of damned like "be doomed to misfortune or failure"
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Nov 6th 2009 12:44PM
Well its the old school definition of damned like "be doomed to misfortune or failure".
Is there a different definition of "the Damned" that I am not aware of, or am I just drawing a blank and the answer is totally obvious?
Deezul @ Nov 6th 2009 12:45PM
"Skullcrusher Mountain" is also playable on LRB.
Archon (PSN: Archonik, XBL: DarkARHN) @ Nov 6th 2009 12:47PM
Also, I am not talking about the word "damn". Just "the Damned". Because if we are treating this as a derivative of "damn", we should probably censor Bruce Dickinson, because his name contains "dick", which is not always short for "Richard".
GewurztraminerX @ Nov 6th 2009 12:55PM
I've also heard a song on the background of the menus with the word 'hell'.
Not that I care; it just amused me.
Then again, it is rated E10, not E.
Ravnos @ Nov 6th 2009 1:30PM
I missed that part of the news. The Damned are pretty good, I'm actually kind of stoked on this week's release now.
allenkoholic @ Nov 6th 2009 1:28PM
Hopefully, there will be more Damned songs. Captain Sensible needs to be in this game.
dan @ Nov 6th 2009 6:36PM
LOL - Happy Talk ftw!
baby sea tuna @ Nov 6th 2009 12:30PM
I don't know what a Kasabian is, but other than that, good list.
Slust @ Nov 6th 2009 12:49PM
If you Youtube it, you'll instantly know who they are.
Well, perhaps you might need to have been a part of the generation that watched Hackers, but either way, I had no idea who they were until I looked it up and now it's pretty much an instant buy. Never knew that was them.
Panic Blitz @ Nov 6th 2009 12:46PM
Aw, come on, only part 2 of Smash It Up? Part 1 is just an intro, and the song is so much cooler with it! Even The Offspring kept it in there when they covered it for the Batman Forever soundtrack.
ill trooper @ Nov 6th 2009 2:45PM
Maybe it has some short version to flow into Pt.2. But if leaving it out allows me to play Pt.2, I'll accept it...
"Don't wanna be a sucker like all the rest..."
tcc3 @ Nov 6th 2009 1:03PM
Isnt "Fell in Love with a Girl" the one with the lego video? if anything should be in Lego RB, that should be. Video and all.
Jose [Steam & PSN: Assmar] @ Nov 6th 2009 1:13PM
See, I watch these song releases come up every week, and it is why these DJ games should focus on Hip-hop, and not try to appease the other rhythm game fans. You guys got your games and awful music, please just let us have Scratch all to ourselves? No Daft Punk, no Kings of Leon, and please no Bloc Party.
DarkLN1X @ Nov 6th 2009 1:40PM
mm, I wasn't aware of that, so it makes 2 Kasabian new songs for me , yeah!
LeadBoxx @ Nov 6th 2009 2:30PM

zero2dash @ Nov 6th 2009 2:33PM
I'd rather just see the whole White Blood Cells album; De Stijl would be great too, but I doubt that will happen.
I'm also still holding out hope that eventually they'll release some of the Raconteurs stuff, like Level, Broken Boy Soldier and Many Shades of Black.
zero2dash @ Nov 6th 2009 2:34PM
Err...nevermind I forgot they already had Many Shades of Black. =|
bongoes Sector 2814 @ Nov 6th 2009 3:07PM
White Blood Cells and De Stijl would be great but I really really want Elephant.
