Were you one of the seven people on the planet who managed to resist Mass Effect's "possible alien nudity" siren call? Prepare for your steely resolve to buckle: The game's only $9.99 this weekend on Steam. Despite any qualms we may have had with the game's completely broken inventory system, or the frequent appearance of three-toed sloth-powered elevators, we find it hard not to suggest dropping a Hammy to add this to your collection.
It might even help you decide whether you want to drop six Hammies on the upcoming sequel. Or a Grant and a Hammy, we guess, though that sounds like Denny's menu item. (Great, now we want some Denny's. Thanks for nothing, Valve!)

If you still don't have this game, I don't need to tell you how much I would recommend it (everyone else has done that job) Great Sci-Fi story (especially the ending act), great characters (Wrex), great fiction, etc... With Mass Effect 2 coming out soon, you definitely should pick this up. The PC version fixes some problems with the game when it came out on 360, and it is only $10. Why doesn't every gamer have this game?

I ran a hard copy version on the Win7 Beta and never had any problems with it. Bought it when I got my new computer a few months ago. Such a great game.

$10 is definitely a great deal for this game! Despite its flaws, if you're into sci-fi this game is a very fun shooter RPG.
The first levels suck but once you get past that and the fights are a bit more fair it really gets fun.

You have no reason not to get this.
Well, maybe if your still running Win98
Still, you have no reason not to get this.

Actually, I wouldn't advise you to buy it if you were on Vista (and 7 perhaps) either. From the Steam-page:
"* MICROSOFT VISTA USERS: Launching “Mass Effect” from Steam requires the setting “Run as Administrator”. If the User Account Control feature of Windows Vista is enabled, launching “Mass Effect” from Steam will result in failure. For users with User Account Control enabled, launch Steam using the “Run as Administrator” option or launch from the windows shortcut."
You'd expect they would know a way to fix that by now...

What don't you have to do that with with vista? Worst OS eva. The reduculous security actually makes the system less secure because you have bypass it and change settings constantly. Doesn't matter, my lame lapper can't run ME anyway.

There is a way to fix it. Run it as administrator (which since it's your PC you should be doing anyway), or turn off UAC.
I really don't see how that's a dealbreaker for playing on Vista, annoying yes, but it's pretty easy to deal with.

yes there is that work-around, but lets face it, thats a work-around and it defeats the whole point of having these security restrictions enabled in the OS. No application/game should force you to bypass security like this - so it is not a recommended thing to do and definitely not something you should get in the habit of doing unless you really know what you're doing. EA/Bioware should come out with a proper fix for this!

While I agree that they should fix it, I would also contend that UAC is really only for people who don't know what they're doing. I would hope that anyone interested enough in PC gaming would be able to take care of their computer and keep it secure without autopilot on. Windows XP didn't have UAC, and I never had any trouble there either.

I already own it on 360. Not even sure my computer can run it. But I bought it.
Because while some games deserve to be torrented (*cough*MW2), some games deserve to be bought twice.
Well... that and I can't seem to resist Steam sales.

if you don't support what they're doing, DON'T BUY IT. if you don't buy it, then you don't PLAY it. don't act like it's your birthright to play games you don't pay for. being a thief is much worse than taking out some standard features from a PC video game.

Can people stop bringing up MW2 in every single post that is unrelated to the game? We get it, you aren't going to buy the game, and it makes you feel like a rebel.

The people who are boycotting or saying mw2 deserves to be torrented are just flat out looking for a reason to pirate it. This is why PC gamers always look like the elitist douchebags that everyone always calls them out on. Like someone owes them something so now they have a reason to steal a game. Hey PC gamers, this is why no one supports your damn platform of choice anymore.

No need to generalize PC gamers in one large singular grouping of elitists... I'm a PC gamer and I'm proud to say I've never pirated a game that is still on the market.

You guys are funny. When nobody buys the PC version, IW are going to say it's because of piracy, regardless of actual piracy. So, it's simply a matter of making the most of a shitty situation and torrenting it anyway. Won't make a difference.
The great thing about the PC is that it's a democratic platform. We will buy your game if you do well by us (Spore, anyone?), we will pirate your game if you don't. The only person who loses is the developer who thinks they can tell us what we want, we're going to get your game either way. Give us a reason to give you money, and you'll find we're quite willing to do so. Just ask Valve.

Right here, dood!
Buying as we speak. It may not really sound like my kind of game... but for $10, I'd be crazy not to get it. Damn, I've bought so many games through Steam... My collection of games tied to my Steam account is over 50 (over 60 if you consider the Strong Bad and Sam & Max episodes as individual games...). And, hey, unlike with buying used games, the developers DO get some cash off of this.
(not that I'm against buying used games... I am cheap, but I do love owning physical copies of games, too).

i didnt play it!
just bought it yesterday off Steam, great deal! been playing it and its enjoyable but very slow! the elevators in the citadel are so annoying, takes so long to get to places! and all the side quests keep distracting me from the main story so its playing even slower for me (altho that part if my own fault) ...
the game seems decent but i think its a bit overhyped so far... my squadmates walk right through doors that close on them, and they walk into walls a lot, not a gamebreaker but it looks pretty stupid for a modern game!
all in all tho it seems decent, definitely worth the $10 so would recommend everyone to buy it!

I havn't played it...yet. I own it on disk, and have done for quite some time, I've just never gotten around to installing it. Suppose thats what you get when you have a backlog of around 100 games (all of which I want to play) and a compulsive game buying tendancy.

Except the PC version fixes the inventory system, the slow elevator load times and the handling of the Mako vehicle. : )

I was playing the game 9 hours in and it was completely stable, no crashes.
But, I was stopped because of the elevator glitch on the planet Feros, this affects the 360 version as well and I had only one save game slot so I was fucked. A patch was released recently which fixes the glitch but I haven't gotten around to playing the game again. I'll wait a bit right before the sequel comes out and next time am saving my game in multiple locations!

PC version never crashed for me, there were glitches in the game that were fixed after wards. Not only that, but free DLC is great, even the second one was crap.

I just wish Bioware would rerelase Mass Effect for the PC in a collector's edition as the PC version never got it. It would look strange to have the vanilla version next to the collector's edition of Mass Effect 2 on my shelf.
I haven't even beaten the 1st game yet and have fallen in love with it, this is one of the few games worth purchasing a special edition for in my opinion, also The Witcher.

WOOHOO!!!!!
I bought a 360 and used the Giftcard to buy another 360, and then used the Giftcard to buy another one.
THREE Xbox 360s for $300!!!!
Selling them on ebay as we speak. Looks like their gonna go for about $175 each.
I LOVE YOU Joystiq for giving me that idea. Thanks to you I now have $225!
I knew visting this site would pay off one day.
Related to actual post: $10? Thats a really good deal for this game, but I would rather get Dragon Age : Origins.
