Man, we have got to get into watching Mixed Martial Arts. Not only do the sport's leagues have like, the coolest names ever, but the televised bouts also occasionally contain sneak peeks into upcoming video games. For instance, on last night's Strikeforce (so, so cool) match, the first-ever gameplay footage from EA Sports MMA was revealed. You can find it posted just after the jump.
How does it look? We have no idea. There's plenty of punching and kicking, sure, and one might say these two techniques are used intermittently -- or rather, that they are mixed. Therefore, our initial, amateur analysis of the video concludes that it reeks of authenticity.
I was flipping around the channels last night and saw this when it got to the main bout. Never watched this before because I feel its as homoerotic as it is brutal. The bout was very gay at times (a 15 second "69" position hold) but the punches were sweet. Although the "greatest MMA fighter" Russian dude and the black guy had wicked guts and love handles and a big lack of stamina, I struggle to consider this legit.
It was a nice surprise to get a video tease last night during the StrikeForce event. The gameplay video doesn't look too bad... but with this genre, I'm waiting to get hands on time with the game before I make any decisions. Plenty of MMA/K-1 type games have come and gone (the early UFC games, K-1 games, Pride GP game)... and only now with UFC 2009 have we had one that was actually worth buying, and even UFC 2009 has it's flaws.
the parallels between fandom of MMA and video games are quite interesting. Both are struggling for credibility against established industries (MMA against Boxing in combat sports, Video Games against traditional mainstream entertainment outlets like TV and Movies). Both have a dominant share of the most elusive marketing group (males 18-24). Both routinely have to defend their business from knee jerk reactions to violence.
So when a presumed hardcore videogame fan passes casual judgement on MMA, its wonderfully ironic.

holy shit you could fill a book with this post comments. Anyways, not going to bash the sport, simply say i dont like it and dont find it entertaining except for those who enjoy plain violence and a bit of man o man rubbing.I do know some people who like those.
Hold on Hold on, I'm confused after all these off topic comments. So, do you get to punch Bono in the face in this game or not?? If so it's a must buy day one purchase for me! :)
