Minesweeper adventure game in the works for OneBigGame
The neat thing about doing something as unassailable and cool as designing a game for charity is that no one can make fun of your ideas without looking like a total jackass. Take Charles Cecil, the man behind the Broken Sword series, for instance. According to G4, he's creating an adventure game based on Minesweeper. It's blogger gold, until you learn that he's making it for charity game publisher OneBigGame.
So now, instead of the hilarious gag we instinctively created -- involving making a mustache out of honey and cat hair and then putting it on a mime -- we're just going to wish Cecil all the best. Dammit.

...how does this even work, anyway?
Hafkie @ Nov 9th 2009 9:13PM
In a world filled with mines, one man must stand tall and save us all. With a flag in hand, he sets out to mark every mine so we may walk the land in peace. So maybe, with his hot babe in hand, our hero can one day put on his shades and ride off in the sunset.
vidGuy @ Nov 9th 2009 9:15PM
It seems to me that staking a flag into the ground where you think there might be a mine is an inherently bad idea.
Is this game . . . survival horror?
LaughingTarget @ Nov 9th 2009 9:18PM
Until one day he accidentally stuffs the hot babe on top of a mine and goes to kiss the flag, impaling his face. Thus ends his epic journey.
Hafkie @ Nov 9th 2009 9:25PM
And sadily, he is left there to die, with his eyes relaced by two red Xs.
Shadow Hog @ Nov 9th 2009 9:29PM
And once you die, your save is erased so you have to start all over. Kind of like a Rougelike, except it's Minesweeper.
Unless you're on Vista. Then it'll beg you to continue that saved game you continued and finished six months ago.
MechaGamerX @ Nov 9th 2009 9:16PM
I don't know how this will work, nor do I know wether or not it would be successful.
All I know is that the gameplay is going to piss you the fuck off.
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Nov 9th 2009 9:19PM
I have never won a game of minesweeper.....ever.

But it was on the Win7 one, so I can retry the same level again, so after I failed for the hundred time I memorized all the locations.

It's always odd, seeing screenshots of someone elses desktop. Nice theme, btw.

Bobby Kotick @ Nov 9th 2009 9:26PM
Was I the only one, or did anyone else just pull up Minesweeper?
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 9th 2009 9:37PM
I didn't pull up Minesweeper...but Solitaire was accessed.
Anti-Villian @ Nov 9th 2009 10:01PM

Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 9th 2009 10:06PM

"involving making a mustache out of honey and cat hair and then putting it on a mime"
Can we see this anyway?
chaos3346 @ Nov 9th 2009 9:37PM
It's a reference to one of the Gabriel Knight games.
To rent a motorcycle you needed a form of ID (A passport)
To get a passport you had to steal one from a gentleman's room
To get into his room you had to make yourself look like him to trick a bellhop
To trick a bellhop you had to, among other things, give yourself a mustache
To give yourself a mustache, you had to (this is where it gets weird) get hair from a cat
To get hair from the cat, you had to use scotch tape
To get the cat to run into the scotch tape, you had to chase it into a hole in a shed, above which you had to affix the scotch tape
To affix the hair to your face, you had to use a packet of maple syrup that you had stolen from the gentleman's room earlier in the game
All to rent a motorcycle. Imagine how logical THIS was to figure out.
People point to this when discussing why the adventure game died off.
I got these steps from an article I read a long while ago on my internet journeys, I don't have the link, sadly.
chaos3346 @ Nov 9th 2009 9:46PM
Oh, and I failed to mention that the man you must imitate doesn't EVEN HAVE A MUSTACHE. You have to draw one on his passport with a marker.
I know some of my steps are off, it's been a long time since I read about it, but the whole affair is roughly that... insane.
Anti-Villian @ Nov 9th 2009 10:03PM
my god! this sounds marvelous =D
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Nov 9th 2009 9:31PM
Hm, looks like he took care of them all...

Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 9th 2009 9:41PM
I'm surprised. That meme is holding up far better than Kanye, Picard, Cake, or the Rickroll...
Special Agent Steve @ Nov 9th 2009 10:00PM
Eh, not the rick roll or cake.... sadly.
Courtney @ Nov 10th 2009 2:39AM
Darth, that's probably because a good usage of it actually involves coming up with something slightly clever, rather than just repeating other people's words, hence the whole thing stays fresh longer.
Fragmonky @ Nov 9th 2009 9:41PM
please tell me this is going to be installed to every school computer in the U.S.
Sandmonkey @ Nov 9th 2009 9:46PM
"Sir, we found him dead without any legs, in a minefield, this dog is also presumed to be his."
"I guess he should..........."

Sandmonkey @ Nov 9th 2009 10:23PM

WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Nov 9th 2009 11:23PM
Mmmmno I don't think so. Especially since you were late to the party.

I feel so naive.

Minesweeper was for some reason my game of Summer 08. I somehow managed about 10,000 games of Minesweeper over the space of 4 months.
Drew -- PS360: uphillbothways @ Nov 10th 2009 10:07AM
Anyone else notice that the game pictured isn't possible? Some of the numbers have fewer spots for mines adjacent to them than they should.
Drew -- PS360: uphillbothways @ Nov 10th 2009 10:14AM
Imma go ahead and correct myself here. I was wrong. The edges of the shown pic isn't the edges of the board, so everything does work.
And for those wondering how to play this game, here's the idea:
Each number tells how many bombs are adjacent to that square. You have to decide if a mine exists at a spot by looking at the numbers surrounding it and ...I don't think I can explain this game without demonstrating, so forget it.
hhhenryhhh @ Nov 10th 2009 10:15AM
you mean like this game? http://www.faeriewarsgame.com/game.html
NumbN8 @ Nov 10th 2009 10:27AM
There is an adventure game with a minesweeper feel. It was called Betrapped! and it was a very good game.
I'm noticing more and more on this site that any game that isn't halo or CoD gets slammed constantly by the bloggers. Are they ignorant, uneducated, or do they only consider it a true game if they get to yell obscenitys while killing other people? Expand your horizons once and a while.
Reaper man @ Nov 10th 2009 5:51PM
I am awesomes at minesweeper... took me a few tries, but yah...
