Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition content coming as DLC
Remember when Capcom conducted a poll asking how we wanted to receive the additional content being offered in Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition -- in a boxed version of the game or as a DLC expansion to the original? Turns out the questionnaire wasn't a pointless exercise. A majority of the participants answered that they'd rather receive the new features (including motion-control functionality) as a downloadable pack. After deliberating with the RE5 team in Osaka, Capcom has announced that the new content will come to the U.S., Europe and Australia as DLC for the core game.
Considering Alternative Edition is going to Japan in a retail box, this move is fairly surprising. Perhaps even a little upsetting, if you've gone ahead and traded your copy of the game in towards the cost of Horse Life Adventures. Even more upsetting if you did that today. Like, right before writing this post. Gah!

Surprisingly I have yet to finish Resident Evil 5. I'm just going to hold out for when the 'Director's Cut' is released on PS3.
...Terrible, terrible name for what is basically a 'GOTY Edition'.
joeybeast @ Nov 9th 2009 4:24PM
I don't think the game has won any GOTY yet.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 9th 2009 4:28PM
Well, whatever the hell you want to call it. I didn't expect people to take my comment so literally. Midnight Club LA just released a "bundle package" and so did Star Wars: Force Unleashed.
I'm just saying 'Director's Cut' makes almost no sense for a video game.
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Nov 9th 2009 4:30PM
Isn't this the Director's Cut? I doubt they would have an Alternative adition and a Director's Cut, or are they different things, inform me.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 9th 2009 4:30PM
"Ultimate Edition" is okay, though.
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Nov 9th 2009 4:44PM
Trust me, RE5 will definetley not be winning any GOTY awards.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 9th 2009 4:55PM
Why the hell do I get downvoted? That makes absolutely no sense.
I said it was basically a "GOTY Edition" because that's what it is. Even if the game didn't win GOTY the package itself resembles that of a GOTY edition.
silverwolf761 @ Nov 9th 2009 5:12PM
Bitching about downvoting only invites more downvoting
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Nov 9th 2009 5:22PM
Awesome. Injustice over injustice. I like the way you think.
whylekat @ Nov 9th 2009 5:42PM
Spyder we all know by now.. there's no fair justice over the internets.. Especially on Joystiq.
Courtney @ Nov 9th 2009 5:44PM
The name is also a throwback to the first RE, as it got a Director's Cut release about a year or so after it's release. So it makes sense in that regard.
If I was going to complain about it, I might complain about the fact that a DC usually refers to a director recutting a movie because he was dissatisfied with the version released to the theater and wants to show people more of what his vision was. That's really not the case with these.
bemaggg @ Nov 9th 2009 6:08PM
I clicked [-] after the first "terrible"
silverwolf761 @ Nov 9th 2009 9:57PM
"Awesome. Injustice over injustice. I like the way you think."
Better than "Waaaah! Nobody understands me!"
Seriously, this is the comment section on a Videogame News Aggregator, so referring to getting downvoted as "injustice" is both comical and kind of immature.
Joystiq, and the Internet at large isn't exactly known for intellect or compassion so just think of where it's all coming from and take it in stride.

Sandmonkey @ Nov 9th 2009 4:24PM
I sold mine back in April, I thought I beat it and got all the weapons and that would be it :/
It looks cool, but its not worth another buy for me.
NaeemTHM @ Nov 9th 2009 4:24PM
I feel your pain Griffin, I did something similar a few months back.
Guess I'll have to re-buy the game at a much later date.
Harold @ Nov 9th 2009 4:28PM
SUCKS for whoever sold their copy for 20$ at gamestop :P
mywhitenoise @ Nov 9th 2009 5:34PM
Gamestop actually gives you $20 for that game? That's actually a decent price considering you can buy it for $20 on gamefly, and gamestaq.com
Jim @ Nov 9th 2009 4:32PM
want it on disc.
Levi @ Nov 9th 2009 9:23PM
so buy the game for $40 used and the DLC for
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Nov 9th 2009 4:33PM
I sold my copy and don't regret it. 3rd person action/adventure is my favourite genre and between Uncharted 2 and Splinter Cell in a few months, I've got all I need and won't be rebuying this. Oh Resident Evil, what happened to you? :(
Monica Dickey @ Nov 9th 2009 5:02PM
Yeah I agree. RE4 was really cool at the time and I was addicted but RE5 made virtually no improvements and I just didn't enjoy it as much, plus third person games are becoming more popular there's real competition now. I hope with RE6 they push into some sort of new gameplay styles and can refresh the series.
NoughtSoClever @ Nov 9th 2009 5:30PM
The Resident Evil series, pre 4, changed very little from one to the next and yet was very successful. Many people bought RE5 even with all the complaints of not being able to move while shooting in the demo, a limitation that has been in the series since the first title. I see no reason why they should need to constantly reinvent a successful series. My only complaint would be that they should work on the atmosphere and the difficulty of the game such that it seems more like a survival horror and less like an action game, which is essentially what it has become. Either way, hopefully we'll get a Dead Space sequel.
Levi @ Nov 9th 2009 9:28PM
problem is, if they keep doing this, they will lose sales. Everyone bought 5, most everyone knows it's not as good as 4. If they made the same game for 6, it would surely get less sales than 5. I remember how excited everyone was for the reboot. Previews for 4 had everyone really intrigued. Now that everyone knows another game with the same engine will be less interesting, they have to reboot it.
Anyway, they said they were gonna, so. Yup.
ducttapeBigSexy (PSN&XBL: ducttape12) @ Nov 9th 2009 4:36PM
Horse Life Adventures?
Deaddy @ Nov 9th 2009 4:37PM
Great news, I didn't think Capcom would actually go through with it.
just a guy @ Nov 9th 2009 4:38PM
I just traded mine for the deluxe edition of Horse Life adventures, which comes in a collectable stable bag containing a brush, a locket, and a gigantic syringe full of ketamine. Now if anyone needs me, I'll be passed out on the floor.
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Nov 9th 2009 4:42PM
Trust me, RE5 will definetley not be winning any GOTY awards.
just a guy @ Nov 9th 2009 4:45PM
Looks like you won't be winning any spelling awards either.
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Nov 9th 2009 4:45PM
errr...reply fail.
just a guy @ Nov 9th 2009 4:59PM
first you better stop waving it... like a... feather... duster?
Wardo @ Nov 9th 2009 4:43PM
This is absolutely fantastic news, it's exactly what I wanted!
Levi @ Nov 9th 2009 9:30PM
agreed! I'll definitely play the game again with motion controls. Otherwise, I'd sell it, and probably not re-buy it for the extra content and controls. Win-win for me and Capcom.
rohan @ Nov 9th 2009 4:52PM
SSF4 following in the same path?
CJLopez @ Nov 9th 2009 8:29PM
i hope so
aaronx_x @ Nov 9th 2009 4:54PM
YAY
Kdiggy @ Nov 9th 2009 4:55PM
As a PS3 owner who owns the game, I hope they give us the option to pass on the motion controls and just use the existing control scheme.
Ashitaka @ Nov 9th 2009 6:12PM
Of course they'll do that :)
Kdiggy @ Nov 9th 2009 7:34PM
Thanks! I haven't heard anythign about that, so I wasn't sure. Good to know though.
M.Garvey @ Nov 9th 2009 4:58PM
It's cool I suppose. I hadn't picked the game up as of yet and was just gonna wait until the new version was released. Looks like i'm gonna have to spend the $40-$50 for the game and then another $15-$20 for the DLC...thanks Capcom! While your at it, why don't you release Super Street Fighter IV for DLC also...I already have THAT game!
Wardo @ Nov 9th 2009 5:26PM
You know, it really isn't Capcom's fault that you didn't buy the game when it came out months ago...
mywhitenoise @ Nov 9th 2009 5:38PM
So...somehow spending anywhere from your projected $55 - $70...is worst than $60?
Here's an idea...how about buying the game USED and save even more money?
CrissCross87 @ Nov 9th 2009 7:30PM
Re5:AE is just re5 with extras. Super Street Fighter 4 is basically a brand new game. Reworked balance, new characters, new moves. I would rather pay full price for SSF4 to support the fighting game genre. But back to RE5, if the motion controls are just as good, and if the alternative editons replaces retail copies, I wouldn't mind buying the game for ps3 since I already own and beaten the game(not 100% though) on xbox 360.
M.Garvey @ Nov 10th 2009 10:32AM
You know, it really isn't anyones fault. I appreciate your comments, and I had already come to the conclusion that I would just buy the game used if I do in fact decide to get it when the time comes.
fohf @ Nov 9th 2009 5:27PM
Now how about the details on release date and DLC prices?
fred @ Nov 9th 2009 5:30PM
awesome but i don't want to use motion controls, hoping I can use the dualshock
snarfoogle @ Nov 9th 2009 5:34PM
Is this just motion control? Add the RE4 stages and chars to Mercs as DLC and I'll buy that!
whylekat @ Nov 9th 2009 5:44PM
I believe it's motion control + the new playable sections of Chris & Jill storming the castle (which was previously a flashback cutscene)
RKN @ Nov 9th 2009 6:08PM
Will this come to the PC version please? Capcom, you like the PC don't you?
RICH @ Nov 9th 2009 7:55PM
WOW I just bought RE5 because I havent had a chance to play it yet so this is very well good news to here>
