Wii Fit Plus claims top spot in UK sales chart, Dragon Age debuts in fifth
Wii Fit Plus has taken the top spot in the UK during its second week of release, according to Chart Track. The excellent Dragon Age: Origins premiered in fifth place, behind Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports Resort and two football games. No surprises there!
Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time premiered at the 22nd spot, which is a weaker debut than we had anticipated for the titular duo's final(ish) outing. It'll likely have a stronger showing in the US, though we'll have to wait for the NPD results to see if it lands in the top ten.

It's tough to say which will be higher: Uncharted 2 or Ratchet and Clank.
I would guess U2, seeing as it was out longer.
Vcize @ Nov 9th 2009 10:12AM
Really? I don't expect it to even be close.
Vidikron @ Nov 9th 2009 10:21AM
Yeah, U2 will be a lot higher. R&C is an excellent series IMO, but it has never been a blockbusters in terms of sales. It doesn't help that Sony always undersells the game too. I wouldn't even know a new game was out if I didn't read video game blogs.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 9th 2009 10:32AM
I love R&C games, but I'm rooting for Uncharted. That game was fantastic.
Marmot @ Nov 9th 2009 12:03PM
I think R&C has been really poorly marketed, even in the gaming community it's not getting that much coverage.
sikbeta @ Nov 9th 2009 12:10PM
Guys, you are killing Ratchet.... He is a HERO! XD
Ashitaka @ Nov 9th 2009 10:07AM
These are sad, sad news.
Ashitaka @ Nov 9th 2009 2:57PM
I'm sorry, I didn't know that you lot would rather have wii fit plus and wii sports resort topping the charts instead of Dragon's Age and R&C.
Mr Khan @ Nov 9th 2009 10:15AM
How has Dragon Age been doing overall, sales-wise? There really wasn't much hype behind it until recently, when they started really pushing some ads for it.
mr nimblewick @ Nov 9th 2009 10:56AM
And the ads for it are terrible, unfortunately.
iHavepants {SteamPSN: Arkanti} @ Nov 9th 2009 12:48PM
The regular and deluxe editions on Steam are number 1 and 2 respectively for top sellers, and they've been there for a few days.
No way to tell what that means however.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 9th 2009 3:03PM
the ads arent that bad, the marilyn manson ones and 30 seconds to mars yeah, but the one that aired during the world series was actually CG, entirely separate from that one trailer, with a narration by the grey warden, it was pretty good. The only other ads ive seen are the "9/10 game informer" sort of things
Orion @ Nov 9th 2009 10:16AM
Wow.. that's all really depressing. And we wonder why creative IPs aren't made and the game line ups are filled with mini games and repetitious sports games.
Adv2k1 @ Nov 9th 2009 10:21AM
creative IP's really ? This is yet another fantasy game with dwarfs, orcs and magic. That's not exactly a fresh idea for a video game.
Scribblenauts is a fresh IP, fresh game design and has sold pretty well FYI
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 9th 2009 10:37AM
Dragon Age is basically Baldur's Gate 3, so it's pretty important that it use a classic setting. Besides, with that kind of thinking, there hasn't been a "fresh" game since the early 90s. The important thing is that Dragon Age uses all those old and perhaps overused cliches perfectly
MLS @ Nov 9th 2009 10:38AM
Dragon Age would have sold better if it were a DS math equation game.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 9th 2009 12:50PM
There is nothing creative or original about dragon age at all, and this is coming from someone who has about 30 hours put in so far. Every part of the lore is either a copy of lord of the rings or WoW or some other medieval fantasy tale.
The actual gameplay is a straight ripoff of how western rpgs used to be like on PC about 10+ years ago. So I don't know where you get this notion that it's creative just because it's a new IP.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 9th 2009 3:04PM
it's not a ripoff of old RPGs gameplay when the games that defined old school RPGs are made by the same company!
baby sea tuna @ Nov 9th 2009 10:37AM
Just wanted to drop some mad love for Dragon's Age. I've been playing it all week and I've been having so much fun with the side quests that I haven't even wanted to touch the main quest yet!
For everyone that's on the Bioware network, hit me and my dwarf up: baby_sea_tuna
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 9th 2009 10:39AM
I played it nonstop from 12am Friday until 8pm sunday, stopping only for sleep a few times, and 10 minutes of Kill Bill. What a perfect game, after I beat it the only thing i could think about was loading up my final boss save and talking to all my party members one last time and watching the cutscenes again, and then playing the whole thing over again. Definitely my GotY as of now, if not GotDecade
iHavepants {SteamPSN: Arkanti} @ Nov 9th 2009 12:51PM
Definitely my GOTY, it's a shame how much hate the game is getting from masses of people who bought it seemingly expecting it to be Oblivion.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 9th 2009 12:53PM
I would have enjoyed it a lot more if the combat wasn't so archaic and awful. I like to actually control my character in combat, which is (one reason) why I'm looking forward to Mass Effect 2 a lot more.
a drunk amputee @ Nov 9th 2009 2:53PM
tmac - what part of positioning your mage, queuing potions, selecting spells and choosing your area of effect not count as 'controlling my character in combat'. Okay, you're not selecting body parts to blast off. Why are you disappointed it's not a FPS? You're playing the wrong game.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 9th 2009 2:57PM
Agreed. There's a ton of combat options, spells, and tactics for all classes.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 9th 2009 2:59PM
while I enjoyed the classic style combat of the game, that doesnt make tmac's claims any less valid. It might be one thing for a mage, but even then you're reaching. As for warriors and rogues, it certainly would have been enjoyable to control your swings and attacks in the same manner as an action combat game akin to Ninja Gaiden or maybe even just Oblivion. Still, that wouldnt have really fit with the rest of the game, particularly the emphasis on strategy would be nil because who needs strategy if combat is skill based?
a drunk amputee @ Nov 9th 2009 3:12PM
Yes, but to complain that combat is DAO is awful because it should be more action oriented is like saying that chess would be way more awesome if you could punch the other person in the face every 3rd move and suplex them if you put them in check. Wait, chess should be more like that! I guess I can see your point.
Xenuxenu @ Nov 9th 2009 10:37AM
Even though I feel robbed by EA with their shitty Collector's Edition and all the DLC on launch BS they included, I still can't stop playing it. But let's be honest, it is a niche game, everything about it is for core WRPG enthusiasts just like Baldur's Gate before it. From the branching narrative and game play, it's great that they went back to their roots. My non-gamer GF fell asleep watching while I was meticulously playing it on the hardest difficulty, she never did on Uncharted 2.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 9th 2009 10:42AM
What was wrong with the collector's edition that made it shitty? It was pretty much the same as every collector's edition ever. And there was only the warden's keep DLC really. The stone prisoner was only on there at such an exorbiant price to encourage people to buy the game new, and warden's keep was only 560 points.
Xenuxenu @ Nov 9th 2009 10:45AM
I forgot to add, she did say "D'awwww" on the dog, and precious comments like "How long are you going to mess with that (player customization) before you start playing." and "Stop constantly checking those (skills and inventories) and get to the action." I am also constantly pausing to plan strategies and avoid friendly fire as I'm playing on the hardest difficulty :)
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 9th 2009 10:47AM
CE wasn't that bad. I can think of worse Collectors Editions (Fable II).
baby sea tuna @ Nov 9th 2009 10:52AM
I kinda get why anyone who bought the CE might be a little irked. I mean, the armor and helmet they give you can't even be worn until probably halfway through the game (I don't know personally because I'm still not strong enough to wear any of it) and the Stone Prisoner was available to the people who bought the regular version as well (something that EA didn't let us know, for obvious reasons,) but for as much fun as I'm having with that game, I don't feel guilty about paying the extra $15.
In case anybody was wondering Warden's Keep was a great quest and totally worth the $7. Should have been included in the CE, granted, but still worth downloading.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 9th 2009 10:57AM
Xenu,
At least your girlfriend stuck around to complain about the menu depth. Mine stuck around long enough to name the dog and then she went back to playing Wii Fit Plus.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 9th 2009 11:17AM
I was able to wear the armor way sooner than halfway through the game. Maybe because i piled all my stats into strength first, but you get access to it at your camp way way earlier than halfway, maybe 1/16 of the way
Xenuxenu @ Nov 9th 2009 10:52AM
@The Dark Wayne
The tissue that I use to wipe my ass has a better quality than the cloth map. Also the three items included in the Collector's are not that great, out of the three only the book was in your inventory from the start, the rest you still have to buy it as you progress a little bit further in the game. The metalpak is good though, still skip the collector's and just buy it regular. You can easily get the SE for $44 the CE is still $75.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 9th 2009 11:18AM
Everyone needs to buy Dragon Age, right now!
biowaredude @ Nov 9th 2009 11:28AM
It's pathetic how many people are pirating it. It has no lame ass DRM and it's clearly a good game. Absolutely infuriating.

Having spent the better part of the year playing Fallout 3, I kind of forgot how awesome Bioware was at creating great dialogue. I laughed aloud at several parts, too. Usually cut scenes piss me off, but these are worthwhile and seamlessly fit into the flow of the game. I'm actually kind of hoping ME2 gets pushed back so that I'll be done with DA when it comes out. Because I will play all 6 playthroughs.
baby sea tuna @ Nov 9th 2009 11:41AM
I just thought "Damn, ME2 is coming out waaaay too soon after DA:O" yesterday. That is exactly the opposite of something that I would have said just a week ago. Go Bioware!
dylan.t.street @ Nov 9th 2009 12:17PM
i swear... if you guys use the word "titular" one more time... i think someone over at joystick learnt a new word.
Flankenstein @ Nov 9th 2009 12:56PM
DA:O on PC is probably the first Bioware that I think is all-around great. Most of their games in the past have had some serious issues that killed the game for me, but this one covers all the bases with polish and depth.
It's gone a long way into convincing me to give Mass Effect 2 a go; I lie firmly in the Mass Effect hater camp. Definitely deserves your $.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 9th 2009 12:57PM
I have a feeling we won't be hearing from Wiizer, who was telling me and everyone else how great ps3 software sales will be the next few months (about a month ago he said that) after seeing those Uncharted and Ratchet numbers.
As for dragon age, I don't really like it because I feel like it's a step backward for the western rpg genre, but I gamefly'ed it so I don't really feel ripped off or anything. The story is somewhat enjoyable even if it is cliched and unoriginal.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 9th 2009 3:01PM
I dont really consider it a step backwards, i'd say it's more of a tribute and summation to everything RPGs used to be, an intentionally classic classic you might say
DBuck_Eye @ Nov 9th 2009 4:08PM
Look at the muscles on that thing! If Wii Fit Plus does THAT to you, I might have misjudged it by just a bit.
Telechimp @ Nov 9th 2009 4:16PM
I'm about 60% through, and i'm really enjoying it. Great game. A few minor tweaks necessary on the xbox interface, but otherwise, really enjoyable.
As for the new ads: "Not every hero is pure," is a terrible tagline, and makes me feel icky for playing the game. I don't really think it represents the game play in any way.
Zsavior @ Nov 9th 2009 9:31PM
Yea Dragon age is overly good, And the Orge did wax my ass WELL! they are not joking when they give you a spell call weak and a archer ability called cripple, use it or die. I mean the beat down was merciless. After my third attempt at killing it and my main guy was the ONLY one alive since it bitch slapped my Mage, with that weird ground pound thing. I ran in and pummel strike the last bit of health it had.
I am not telling you this story for you. I am saying it for me! My first Bioware RPG I am actually proud to have gotten past that monster. Lousy bastard.
sula478 @ Nov 12th 2009 10:48PM

I did a study for my Master's, looking at the gaming habits of the casual vs serious gamer. What I found was that Europe has far more casual gamers than other markets, such as the US and Japan. Indeed, many have cited further growth for casual gaming in Europe so I continue to expect to see lower quality games creeping into the European charts.
For those casual gamers... My Voucher Codes are giving away a Wii Fit board today, it's free to enter and you'll find out instantly if you've won. (I didn't, bah)
