Goodbye Eidos, hello Square Enix Europe

Eidos is now merely a memory, much like Midway, Brash and Atari ... what do you mean Atari is still around!? Anyway, Square Enix announced today that the Eidos reorganization is complete and the company has been reborn as Square Enix Europe, which we still haven't come up with a clever nickname for: Le SquEnix? Der Europa Enix? SEEurope? Eh, still working on it.

SEE will ~~oversaw~~ watch over development studios Crystal Dynamics, IO Interactive, among others, but the company brand will show up on the box as either Square Enix, Eidos or Taito. Bon Voyage, Eidos (the company), may you find peace in the afterlife. Now, can we talk about how positive you all are that Atari still exists?

Update: Noted the brand "Eidos" still exists, even if the company doesn't.

Who the heck were they?

They were a company that focused on spending lots of money on dubious licenses and making games out of them. Had they not gone out of business, they would have published SAW, for example.

Does this mean Europe will get more SE love like more of their anime brands an some other bits and pieces like quicker localisation on games. Or maybe if we're super lucky they might pick up demon's souls and publish it here :D

While this name change doesn't actually mean a whole lot it is a shame to see the Eidos name go. Since the sale of Eidos Codemasters are the only remaining large UK based publisher.

Ah well.

Fear not old bean - the Eidos name will live on in games you'd traditionally associate with it.

It's like this; Eidos is now a label owned by Square Enix Europe. So your Hitmans, Tomb Raiders, Thiefs, Deus Ex's, etc will all have Eidos splash screens and Eidos logos on front of box.

Darn.. I was hoping Eidos would find a way to put Lara up against zombies before they were put in line. Guess not.

Here's hoping for a good tomb raider game soon.

As I posted elsewhere, Eidos will live on as a label owned by Square Enix Europe. So games you'd traditionally associate with Eidos will still have the splash screen and logo.

And we all know who the first lady of Eidos is ;)
