iPhone Commodore 64 emulator back on the App Store
Having been rejected, accepted and subsequently removed, developer Manomio has finally gotten its iPhone Commodore 64 emulator back on Apple's App Store. The emulator had originally been rejected by Apple, thanks to its inclusion of a BASIC interpreter. Access to the interpreter was later removed, and the app was accepted, only to be later removed after some users figured out how to hack it and access the interpreter.
Now, with further revised code, the emulator has reappeared on the App Store. In addition to the revised code, Casualgaming.biz reports that the application has received a boost in performance as well as three new games, International Basketball, International Baseball, and International Tennis. These new titles join the other bundled games, Dragons Den, Le Mans, Arctic Shipwreck, Jack Attack and Jupiter Lander.

Ooh, ooh! A game with graphics and game play from the 80's and half the (already tiny) screen filled with a controller interface! Pass.
JeezWhiz87 @ Nov 11th 2009 5:55AM
This ^
Took the words right out of my mouth. If people still wanted to play C64 we wouldn't have current gen systems. I don't get it, but I guess people will speak with their wallets on this one.
Mecandes @ Nov 11th 2009 9:45AM
For what it's worth, you can rotate the device and have the game fill the screen 100%.
Josh @ Nov 11th 2009 11:50AM
Really?
Have you guys never heard of retro gaming?
Have you never listened to music or watched movies from the 80s? Why not games?

...I just looked at my avatar for the first time in about a year...initiate foot in mouth procedure...

This is so lolz-tastic I don't even know where to begin.
AH, I LOVE COD:MW2 day.

Irony: It's a bitch.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 10th 2009 10:45PM
Sweet. Now, we've just got to get Apple to unblock the other billion apps they keep stopping.
Premature ejaculation man @ Nov 10th 2009 10:47PM
Whoever made it is probably upset by all this meandering around, but must be thrillied by all the free publicity over it!
Preston @ Nov 10th 2009 10:47PM
It would have been nice if they had re-approved this while my iPod touch WASN'T A FREAKING BRICK. Grrr.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 10th 2009 10:51PM
As a first-gen Touch owner...I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Apple has consistently screwed owners over, out of a desire to force owners to upgrade. They'll keep doing it to the next versions soon enough.
I'll be looking at other options when I replace this thing.
Preston @ Nov 10th 2009 11:02PM
@Bradwart: I like the device well enough. What pisses me off is the fact that it bricked while I was trying to transfer my iTunes folder to my external hard drive. I still need to get around to visiting an Apple store or something to see if they can replace it, since I think it's under warranty.
Weasler @ Nov 10th 2009 11:05PM
@Darth
I just needed to throw this out there for those who do not study law. Apple has to impose these prices on the major software updates because of Tax laws. Any update that extends the software beyond it's original scope has to be taxed, period. So Apple (like everyone else) passes this price onto their customers.
Weasler @ Nov 10th 2009 11:09PM
Sorry to both double post and for not posting a source before, but here you go; an article on the aformentioned tax. Enjoy.

Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 10th 2009 11:25PM
I wasn't talking about the software updates-I knew that was a GAAP issue-I was talking about blocking app installs, despite the fact that the hardware is better than the original iPhone, about not enabling features that it has, etc.
Anti-Villian @ Nov 10th 2009 11:27PM
third time lucky, honestly joystiq, if this doesn't go to where it's meant to I will rage.
"Also your bricking should be fixed with a basic factory restore, have you tried that?"
pax copia @ Nov 11th 2009 11:45AM
Weasler, that is a falsehood. Sony has put out numerous feature packed system upgrades to its systems over the years at zero cost to their customer. Apple is simply making you pay to play and now that some questioned their ethics have spun that out. Truth.
Dafrety @ Nov 10th 2009 10:55PM
I need a good Commodore 64 emulator for Android.
*goes to nag yongzh*
shagrath @ Nov 11th 2009 9:30AM
Why oh why everyone keep saying that without even checking the Android market... there is one, guys !!! it's called "Frodo C64". Disclaimer: I'm the developer :p
Anti-Villian @ Nov 10th 2009 11:25PM
Also your bricking should be fixed with a basic factory restore, have you tried that?
Preston @ Nov 10th 2009 11:27PM
1. There's a reply button you know. :P
2. I looked up every possible method to restore it I could find and tried it, no dice. It hangs up on "waiting for iPod" and does nothing for hours. Apparently it's a common problem that doesn't seem to have any fix except sending it back to Apple.
edgore @ Nov 11th 2009 12:27AM
So....I can't use this to play anything other than the programs that come with it, as opposed to, let's say, my vast collection of original retail Commodore 64 disks that I will, let's say, make images of - right? I mean, I can't somehow load an mount disk images...right?
Alex @ Nov 11th 2009 12:39AM
LOAD a:\pong.exe aww crap I don't remember how to do it. I guess I have to pass on this one.
JJ @ Nov 11th 2009 7:57AM
LOAD "PONG", 8, 1
Alex @ Nov 11th 2009 12:00PM
is that the tape drive or the floppy drive?
Mecandes @ Nov 11th 2009 9:52AM
As with any gaming platform, the real test is going to be whether they ever release any great games for it. They say they plan to sell most individual games for $1 each.
Drakkenfyre @ Nov 11th 2009 12:19PM
Are the games he is including his own, or has the copyright expired on them?
