EA may be hurting, but there are still some bright spots, like when it announced Madden NFL 10's sales figures during its quarterly conference call with investors. The publisher revealed that the company "sold" 3.9 million copies globally, which isn't entirely accurate, as we've learned those are "sell-in" figures -- a fancy way of saying "shipped."
EA's John Schappert stated that Madden had a rough start in August, with sales down 19 percent from the prior year, but that it rallied up eight percent year-over-year in September, thanks to the PS3 price drop. The company claims that Madden 10 has sold five percent more than last year's iteration on PS3 and Xbox 360 combined, as of the end of September. Not shabby for a down economy!

Updated rosters, but a patch could take care of that.

I know that, for the most part, it usually is just roster updates and a few cosmetic changes. However, 10 actually did make some nice changes which make it much more playable and enjoyable. Franchise mode is much better, the tackling system is better, and the gameplay feels more realistic than previous Madden iterations.

i agree that this madden was great, but there were some things i really wish they would give you the option to disable, namely the stupid halftime commentary and "highlights", and all the referee cutscenes when they come out to measure. the halftime commentary almost always amounted to "there was a big discrepancy in the number of plays run", and the referee cutscenes aren't even skippable! they make you watch them! lame.
other than that, the gameplay is really, really good, and the animations keep getting better and better every year.

For reference, Halo 3 had more copies in store on LAUNCH DAY than these numbers.
Maybe it's time for Madden to go to a two-year model.

People were waiting years for a Halo followup though.
Madden comes out every year and is basically the same game with a new roster and 5 new features and it's still guaranteed money in the bank for EA... Even if all these units haven't been bought yet, you know they will eventually.
Maybe when they stop making millions of dollars every year with this strategy they'd consider going to every 2 years.

Props to them. Year after year of same-y, lazy design, Madden 10 is actually a spectacular game of football. Happy to see some payoff after all these years of mediocrity and incremental upgrades. It's sad that, up until Madden 10, NFL 2K5 was still the best football sim ever made. Don't know how much Peter Moore had a role in this but it seems as if the culture at EA sports, and EA in general, has significantly changed for the better -- And I'm all for it. Props again, guys.

Why don't EA give up the NFL License so there can be some innovation in football games again.
If i can remember they still sold this many when nfl2k was out.
Come on give it up!

Visual Concepts really doesn't exist anymore...it'd be a while before other studios could spin up a new football title.

Back Breaker looks really promising. It doesn't have the NFL license but it has some fantastic looking action.

Day's not over yet.
Could we see some data on how many copies were pre-ordered? Current record is 4 million plus for Halo 3...which also holds the record for one day sales, 170 million dollars.

Bobby...those are Activision internal records, not general records.
And the fact that you didn't disclose them tells me they were lower.

At least this game works, unlike other sports games I could name.
I'm looking at you, NBA 2k10.

It works, but there's crappy online bugs and random freezes that completely take the fun out of the game.

I bought a madden game for the first time in a really long time. I won't be buying any ea sports game from now on. Too many bugs and annoyances and EA is too stubborn/lazy to fix them. For 60 bucks, I demand a quality made game. Here's to waiting for Assassin's creed II.

Technically, EA did sell them all. They don't care what happens to the copies when they get sent to GameStop, EA already got paid for every one of them.

I know Madden gets a lot of hate from most gamers but I'm a big football fan and I've played Madden just about every year since it's inception. I can say this is by far the best version of Madden ever made. It's a great game.
