Plastic peripheral powerhouse Mad Catz has unleashed its fiscal 2010 Q2 earnings results (that's the three months ending September 30, 2009 for us normal folk) and, while the company is still making plenty of cash ($21.6 million this quarter, to be exact) it saw losses of 16 percent when compared to the same period last year, where Mad Catz' net sales earned it $25.8 million. Its biggest market, North America, also saw a dip in sales this year to the tune of 18 percent; US sales have fallen nearly 20 percent this quarter, while Canadian sales rose 55 percent.
When comparing its gross sales by platform, Mad Catz only managed to lose a small fraction of its PC platform business, while simultaneously building its PS3 and Xbox 360 revenue streams by ten and four percent, respectively, and growing its specialty controller business nearly 20 percent. The company did take a considerable hit in its Wii business -- sales dropped eight percent -- as well as in other platform markets, however.
Citing what its key products were during its fiscal Q2 2010, Mad Catz obviously had a lot of love for Capcom, as several of the fight sticks it offered for 2D fighters were top earners. Aside from that, it pointed to its new line of Rock Band accessories and some Wii items such as its Remote and z-Chuk as other successful ventures.
While this quarter may not have been the best for the company, all signs point to it being a successful fiscal Q3 2010 for Mad Catz. With its collaboration with the biggest game in the universe and its venture with Capcom to offer new fighting game stuff -- the company also confirmed that Marvel vs Capcom 2 stick is legit -- we have a feeling our next post on its earnings will probably have an image of Scrooge McDuck in it.

So we should buy all Activision Certified products?
Cause...you know you collaborated with them on MW2 accessories...

Those numbers will rise again when Super Street Fighter IV comes out.

Probably... And then shortly after Hori and other hardcore joystick manufacturers when people realize Madcatz make garbage. I'm really surprised MadCatz manages to stay in business and get these franchise tie-ins when they make such low quality products.

I've bought a few Mad Catz products, and nearly always been disappointed. The one item I liked was the Pro 440 Series Xbox controller, which was one of the best controllers I've ever had.
But this gen, you pretty much have to buy OEM controllers.

Knockoff controllers pretty much always suck. Only good one I recall is the Logitech wirless PS2 controller my brother use to have. It's always a fine excuse for losing in a videogame, though. Your buddy hands you a knockoff and right away you grimace and think ''oh thanks a bunch asshat"

After I saw those NeoSE wired controllers lag down in a match, I decided to go OEM only from now on. That was pathetic.

Where is everyone? Is MW2 that popular? Yes, it's good and all...but you've got to take some breaks!

Right now there's not a single third party controller that comes anywhere near the quality of an OEM controller, so yea, I could see the net sales being down.

Given their past history for making crap (and since their silly name and logo seem like something held over from the NES era) Mad Catz might well be due for a re-branding. Much like the company formally known as Pelican, also known for making sub-standard third party game accessories, became PDP.
I just don't see the name Mad Catz getting out from under the stigma of their past products. The previous comments bear out the fact that most people think "Mad Catz" = "crap." If they want to make higher end stuff and be taken seriously (as they're attempting with the Rock Band peripherals), doing it under a different, untainted name might be a good move.
The only thing I've bought of theirs in ages is the cymbals for the Rock Band 2dDrums. While I can't say their build quality is outstanding, especially compared to real electronic drum cymbals, they work fine and have certainly held up to a fair amount of pounding. But since I've experienced plenty of shoddy third party stuff over the years, I don't recommend buying anything of the sort until after getting some decent opinions first. Thank you, Internet!
The one company that seems to get it right most of the time (and makes you pay for it) is Logitech. My wireless Logitech controllers for the PS2 and original Xbox still perform like champs.
