Much to the chagrin of many Street Fighter fans trying to get their online multiplayer on, matchmaking issues and lack of a multiplayer lobby system really stood out as glaring missteps in Street Fighter IV. Thankfully, it appears that Capcom has taken the hint and will be including an eight-person multiplayer lobby for groups to observe other matches and virtually "quarter up," as it were.
SSFIV's Masahiro Taguchi let the cat out of the bag on the official Japanese blog for the game (translated by Andriasang), saying that the regular ol' Street Fighter IV did not properly convey "the feeling of players gathering together for fights." He says that the ability to create multiplayer lobbies was on the table before creating SFIV, but was scrapped in favor of the one-on-one model currently in place. As frame rate can be a particularly important issue with fighting games relative to other genres, Taguchi makes a point to dispel any worries of online stuttering while observers look on to games in progress, though admitting that the process of making this lag free was a bit of a "technical feat." We're looking forward to putting Taguchi's claims to the test in 2010 when Super Street Fighter IV lands on our consoles.

Now I can 'persuade' the other people that they cannot beat me. Works every time...

I was wondering why they didn't have this feature. It's annoying having about five friends who all want to fight you around the same time but can only go into a match with one, and the others have to wait for a invite.

It's best for a group of friends. Perfect, really.
Everyone hangs out in the lobby chatting, watching each other and hooping and hollaring at the cool moves being pulled off. And you're actually playing for something...the right to keep playing.
It gets old playing against the same person, with the same style over and over again in a two person lobby when you see 5 or 6 other people from your friends list online. And manually "swapping" just isn't something people are going to put the effort into.

Exactly. SF4 was fun but there were a lot of things like that which were just confusing... If they could have features for their remake of a 15 year old game why not put it in the new one?

Gack I hate the lobby system. I don't want to wait around for a half hour listenig to garbled voice chat just so I can play online for 10 seconds.
I like the online system SFIV already had. I can't stand HD remix or mvc2 online modes I just don't have the paintence to sit and wait.

I hope that this is just optional, and that it co-exists with the currently-existing feature that automatically finds an opponent for you while you're in Arcade Mode. That's the best multiplayer matching feature I've ever seen in a fighting game (as well as the only one I use) and it needs to stay.
Not only does it feel like the arcade version's constant jump-ins, you also get to keep on playing, win or lose...how cool is that? =)
