Valve adds 4 vs 4 competitive matchmaking to Left 4 Dead on Steam
With the release of Left 4 Dead 2 just on the horizon, Valve is making good on its promise to keep up support for the first game ... on Steam, anyway. Valve has flipped the switch on a new update, which adds Team Versus 4 on 4 competitive matchmaking to the mix -- something Valve has been promising was in the works since April of this year.
The update also fixes a pair of bugs in the game, dealing with a nasty game-crashing glitch that would occur as a result of a certain 'Crash Course' achievement (there's a joke in there) being unlocked and an issue where bots and computer-controlled special infected were being reported in the 'View Game Info' screen.

No, I remember downloading the update around Friday and checking the log.
Then I saw it on some other sites around the same time.

so how does 4vs4 work? Is it super mario style were you take turns or is there going to be 8 people rushing the safe houses?

It's basically 1 party of friends vs. 1 part of friends.
It's their attempt to destroy pubstomping, but it won't work.

NO.
It's 1 group of people versus 1 group of people.
4v4.
It's just like the normal versus mode except you and your 3 friends (or clan) can get together and compete against another group of 4.

I think the lack of xbox live support as to do with Microsoft. They have to go through a lot of trouble just to do simple bugfixes, where as with steam they can do whatever they want whenever they want, and have complete control of their content.

Since XBox Live already provides a superior system for that, you don't need this update as much. After all, Live is suppose to be the best matchmaker.

Yes. There are two game modes. Campaign and Versus. In Campaign there are 4 players, each of which control a survivor and must make it to a safehouse at the end of every map. In Versus, there are 4 players on the survivor team, and 4 players on the infected (zombie) team. The survivors try to make it to the safe house with the most amount of health as possible. They get a multiplier to their score based on how many of them actually survived and get a bonus to their score based on how much health they have at the end of the map. The infected try to stop the survivors by playing as one of the special infected. When the survivors either die or reach the safe house, the teams are switched.

So can I finally go back to Versus mode? The reason I stopped playing it because it was 4 randoms vs 4 other people who were friends all coordinating and working together. How about we get a system in place that matches up people with similar skill level? Crazy,I know,but I think it might actually work.

I've yet to reach a game with skill level matching that really works. In Gears of War 2 the teams are always uneven, and Uncharted 2 one team always outranks the other ridiculously. Team Fortress 2's autobalance helps, but usually when the team is a lot better than the other the round is finished so quickly it doesn't really have an effect.
Actually, now that I think about it, Halo 3 wasn't too bad.

Gawd. I love Valve but they need to support the console more. Kinda the opposite for IW, eh?
