Digital Foundry analyzes Wii Modern Warfare, deemed 'functional'
Obviously, the Wii port of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was going to have a few setbacks visually. However, Digital Foundry's recent hands-on with the game suggests developer Treyarch was successful in recreating the overall feel of the original game. "Texture detail and geometry levels are savagely hacked down, lighting effects and shadowing are brutally pared back, frame-rate is cut from 60FPS down to the more manageable 30FPS," the preview notes. However, "it does a good enough job of capturing the look of the original," Digital Foundry concludes.
Of course, visuals aren't the most important aspect of Modern Warfare's transition to the Wii. Digital Foundry answers the hard-pressing question: how does it control? At times "beautifully," although "awkward button placement on the controller makes things difficult for anything other than running and gunning."
It may be watered down, but Reflex will finally grant Wii owners the ability to see what all the fuss was about. While the port is deemed "functional," we can't help but lament the fact that this Wii port still can't best some games from the last generation of consoles.

Understatement of the year, that looks fucking terrible. My friend actually gameflyed it just to see how bad it really was, and it is as bad as it seems.
Victor @ Nov 11th 2009 10:26PM
Why was he voted down? I know everyone loves to downvote people who bash Nintendo, but he's telling the truth. This looks like shit.
It pisses me off to see some people saying it doesn't look so bad, especially when it does :T
Jesus, this looks worse than most GC games, it DOES look bad, and it is a lazy port.

Captain Planet's gay now? Jesus Cody you really are like a walking, breathing wigger stereotype. I'm shocked you didn't throw a "dawg" at the end of that.

It's cool, Tmac. I picked on the poor kid, so I should expect retaliation. Next thing you know, he and his homeboyz will be jumpin' in the EscaHOlade to ryde n' reprezent.
Cody @ Nov 12th 2009 9:52PM
Captain Planet (the Joystiq commenter) and his followers are the ones in reference, tmac.
tmac: you live with your parents. You are a child. Your opinion in regards of anything and everything in this world until otherwise are null and void. Your assumption that I am a "wigger" (whatever that means) falls upon deaf ears outside of Captain Planet and his underage internet friends.
I make and earn my own money; you ask your parents for "allowance". Enough said.
tmacairjordan87 @ Nov 12th 2009 9:56PM
Hey douchebag, I earn my own money and pay rent. I'd live on my own if I wasn't going to college, and unlike you my mommy didn't pay to get me into UF so I could waste my time learning how to "make hip hop" music.
Yeah, real good use of your parents money there. You're a 25 year old poser wigger, which was kinda funny back in high school but it looks really bad for someone your age. You can't hide it either, because most of us have seen your myspace.
You're a 25 year old (supposed) adult, still pretending to be black. Let that sink in for a bit.
TheE3Guy @ Nov 11th 2009 6:39PM
This is why I don't consider the Wii a next (new?) gen system. Sales=/=quality
Mama Luigi @ Nov 11th 2009 10:08PM
"Gens" have nothing to do with console technicalities, or in your case, graphics. Generations are merely timetables when consoles release
TheE3Guy @ Nov 12th 2009 9:26PM
Or the fact that the 90% of the games on the Wii are complete shit because of its hardware limitations. I'm not talking about graphical limitations, I mean CPU power as well. This ruins the cinematic experience presented in many NEXT GEN games. And don't give me that timetable bullshit because the Wii is basically 2 gamecubes duct taped together. Nintendo put almost no effort into making it competitive against the other big 2, and the motion control is just a sales gimmick to sway kids and old people into thinking they're in with the in crowd; sad thing is, it's working.
Darth Bradwart, The Dark Lord of the Sith @ Nov 11th 2009 6:39PM
Why didn't they call it "Call of Duty 4: Modern Wiifare?"
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Nov 12th 2009 3:45AM
They should have called it, "Call of Duty 4: Who are Wii Kidding, this Game Looks Like Ass."
HSOL @ Nov 11th 2009 6:39PM
Graphically, it looks the same as the first Call of Duty on PC.

LegendaryRedass @ Nov 11th 2009 6:45PM
You lost me at "with"
CaramelZappa @ Nov 11th 2009 6:54PM
The wii's controlls are really "cool" to use with an FPS for about ten minutes, but overall it's innaccurate and slow with not enough buttons to do what you really need to. Mouse and Keyboard, 360 controller, and Dualshock 3 are all better for FPS's if you actually want to play the game well instead of toying with a gimmick. The wiimote is great for some things, but this isn't one of them.
Remember what made COD4 the "best" FPS back in 2007? Because as I understood it it was the multiplayer, which will probably fall flat on its face (if it's included at all) in the wii version.
It's really just too little, too late.
JXCgunrunna @ Nov 11th 2009 6:57PM
@bradwart
Best FPS of 2007, 2008, and most of 2009*

:)
Mr Khan @ Nov 11th 2009 7:00PM
The multiplayer is mostly feature-parity on the Wii version. Only the game modes that required large numbers of people are missing. The first map pack is on the disc too, i think
And no, any control scheme is better than dual-analogues. Single analogue, keyboard-and-mouse, especially Wii remote. And i'm not saying that as a Nintendo fanboy, i was never able to understand or appropriately use them.
MowDownJoe @ Nov 11th 2009 7:00PM
Darth: Yes, keyboard and mouse is always better than anything a console offers, but you got to admit that Wiimote+Nunchuk is better than dual analog.
Plus, he said "best console control scheme". While that's debatable for some games (waggle to attack!), at least for a shooter I'd rather use Wiimote+Nunchuk instead of dual analog.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Nov 11th 2009 7:03PM

@CaramelZappa
Too slow? The game has full customization, change the speeds. Inaccurate? Its probably just that you suck because theres an IR pointer for pinpoint accuracy. Not enough buttons? wtf are you wanting to do thats not already mapped, cuddle? From your response, you obviously have not played The Conduit.
The Wiimote has the best controls for FPS on a gaming console. I know its hard for people to understand because its the Wii, but its true. The controller was basically built for FPS.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Nov 11th 2009 7:18PM
Alex, when it's about 11:00pm and I'm playing Halo, CoD, L4D, etc., I don't want to be jumping around, hootin' and holllering like a retard in a bounce house waggling a controller around. I like to have my ass planted on my couch, about 8-12 feet away from my television and enjoy my games and a nice leisurely, COMFORTABLE, pace. The Wii controller does not allow this. I would GREATLY sacrifice what you call "accuracy" for comfort any day of the week.
CaramelZappa @ Nov 11th 2009 7:20PM
@Alex
No, I haven't played the conduit. I have played Metroid Prime 3 and whatever the last Call of Duty game was on the wii. And the IR on the wii is hardly pinpoint accuracy. There's also a noticeable lag between when you point and when the cursor moves. Also, the wiimote leaves you with two triggers, one bumper, the d-pad, and an A button. What about everything that's usually mapped to X Y and B (Or square circle triangle)? Those 1 and 2 buttons don't cut it because you have to change the way you're holding the wiimote in your hand, which is slow and unintuitive.
Built for FPS? Then it would be a mouse and keyboard. Which is available on the PS3, by the way. Which makes UT3 on the PS3 (since it's sadly the only game that uses it properly) the best controlling FPS on consoles, at least in my eyes.
Mr. Fister @ Nov 11th 2009 7:25PM
Uh, Captain Planet, I've played The Conduit, and never once did that game require "jumping around, hootin' and holllering like a retard in a bounce house waggling a controller around."
And the fact that both Alex and Mr. Khan are getting downvoted for their unobtrusive opinions says quite a bit about the Joystiq commenters.
Alex @ Nov 11th 2009 7:26PM
From all the downvotes its amazing how many fanboys are on here.
@Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet]
Why cant you sit comfortabley with the Wii? Are you one of those
people who stick their arms out in the air when they play the Wii?
Play the wiimote like you would play with any other controller.
Adjust the sensor bar to fit you.
Alex @ Nov 11th 2009 7:33PM
@ CaramelZappa
Well then I understand that there's not enough buttons for you, but I've played on both dual analog and Wiimote and the Wiimote does everything great. Even the guy in the article said the Wii controlled "Beautifully."
I've said Wii is the best FPS on a game console for a reason. I dont consider PC a game console, I consider it a computer. PC obviously has better controls than a Wii.
Mr Khan @ Nov 11th 2009 7:37PM
Of course you don't have to move around. Captain Planet just likes to troll.
CaramelZappa @ Nov 11th 2009 7:46PM
So you missed the whole ""awkward button placement on the controller makes things difficult for anything other than running and gunning." right after "Beautifully"?
And like I was talking about the PS3, not the PC.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Nov 11th 2009 7:56PM
@Mr Khan, single analogue? Like...like the abomination of the N64?! Sure it had that tiny little white second one, but barely any games ever used that. You cant possibly think that was a better control scheme than dual analogues!
manyquestions @ Nov 11th 2009 8:19PM
I thought he meant single analog like the original Metroid Prime and Prime 2 scheme. Y'know, the one where you don't have to readjust the camera every three seconds?
Mr Khan @ Nov 11th 2009 8:32PM
Bingo. The control scheme for the best game of all time. Also the control scheme for Goldeneye. I understood those
bm @ Nov 11th 2009 10:06PM
The IR pointer is infinitely better than drunkenly waving your screen in the vague direction of an enemy with an analogue stick, hoping you hit something. Anyone who says otherwise is a drooling fanboy/troll/whatever.
And just because MP3 had some cursor lag doesn't mean all games do. I don't know why MP3 has it but from playing other games it's definitely easy to prevent..
Oh and everyone always goes on about dual analogue being required which is complete and utter bullshit. Who the fuck cares about having analogue controls for walking? NOBODY. KB&M is considered the number 1 control scheme for FPS games and have you EVER heard anyone complain about having to move with the keyboard keys?
N64 FPS games had the C-buttons for walking (if you set it to the proper control scheme) and it was perfect as far as analogue shooters go. We don't need the dumb second analogue stick, period. In fact, somebody mention me ONE game that uses more than one of those sticks in ANY meaningful way that couldn't be replaced by digital. I'm fucking calling you people out right here. Come on.
PS: Dark Wayne: tiny little second analogue stick on the N64 controller? what are you talking about, there's nothing like that.
Mr. Fister @ Nov 11th 2009 10:22PM
Ah, it's good to see balance being restored to the force.
And by that I mean the troll comments are fading away while the reasonable ones are readable.
